;

Besides the *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases), the *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) is another fundamental text for treating miscellaneous diseases. Mr. You Zaijing from our region of Wu possesses profound academic attainments and acute intellectual insight; his exposition of medical principles, combined with his own judgments, resembles the Buddha's preaching with his long tongue turning the great dharma wheel (a metaphor for authoritative discourse that benefits all beings), one can imagine his compassionate heart to save the world. I was born late and did not have the opportunity to personally discuss learning with him, but reading his books is like seeing him in person. I heard from elders that Mr. You wrote books behind closed doors, having no interest in fame or profit. At that time, renowned scholars such as Fang Donghua, Gu Xiu Ye, Shen Guiyu, and Li Keshan formed a literary society in the south of the city; their poems were included in the *Guochao Biecai Ji* (Selected Poems of the Current Dynasty), which had been recited by people of the times for a long time.
I borrowed the manuscript from Chen Zi at Xingmen to collate it, correcting errors and filling in omissions, naming it *Jingui Yi* (Wings of the Golden Cabinet), privately imitating the style of *Shanghan Fuyi*. In imperial examinations, even those who merely guess can pass, let alone treating diseases. Thus, this book serves as wings to the *Jingui Yaolue*, and Mr. You is indeed a meritorious servant of Sage Zhang Zhongjing. This is the preface.
Written at Xin Taiping Xuan by Xu Jin, a junior scholar from Changzhou, in the third month of the year Guiyou (1813).
It is said that writing books is difficult, but selecting them is even more so, because medical principles are hard to comprehend. Books are numerous enough to make oxen sweat and fill warehouses; distinguishing authenticity from forgery is like sifting sand for gold. Having browsed extensive yet miscellaneous works, regarding texts on treating miscellaneous diseases, only manuscript copies remained. That this book will surely be transmitted to posterity needs no further elaboration; it is only a pity that its dissemination has not been wider. My clansman, Elder Brother Dan'an, previously studied together under Master Xichou, analyzing doubts and appreciating unique insights, and the teacher greatly appreciated his love for learning. For thirty years since then, he has worked tirelessly. Consequently, requests for prescriptions came to him continuously, and his fame moved nobles and high officials. Yet he remained humble as if he were an empty valley; even when returning late in the sweltering summer heat, whenever I visited, we would trim the candlestick and engage in deep conversation. He once presented Guo Shi's *Shanghan Bumang Lun* (Supplementary Lost Arguments on Cold Damage) and two books by You Shi on miscellaneous diseases, correcting errors and filling gaps, discussing them with each other for a long time. Now that the collation and printing of You Shi's books are complete, I urged him to submit them to the printer first, naming them *Jingui Yi*. You Shi is undoubtedly a meritorious servant of Sage Zhang Zhongjing, and Dan'an is also a confidant of You Shi. This is the preface.
Respectfully written by my younger brother, Bai Xuefeng.
