Liver Qi Stagnation Hypochondriac Pain refers to the condition caused by emotional stimuli such as grief and anger, which leads to the stagnation and injury of Liver Qi. Symptoms include pain in both hypochondriac regions, spasm and tension of sinews and vessels, and heaviness and stagnation in the lower back and legs.
Zhike Decoction (Bitter Orange Decoction)
Ingredients: Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, 4 liang, decocted first), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome, each 2 liang), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 1.5 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. For each dose, take 4 qian, add 1.5 sheng of water, boil with fresh ginger and jujube until reduced to 0.7 sheng. Strain and take warm on an empty stomach or before meals.
Analysis: Grief and distress cause Liver Qi stagnation; Zhike can unblock the Qi of the Triple Burner, thus serving as the Sovereign herb. The Liver desires dispersal, so the acrid nature of Xixin, Chuanxiong, and Jiegeng is used to disperse it. The Liver suffers from urgency, so the sweet nature of Gancao is used to relieve it. The use of Fangfeng and Gegen is because grief causes Qi to contract; wind herbs are borrowed to expand and lift the Qi.
Dai Yun stated: For hypochondriac pain accompanied by slight fever, Zhike Decoction from *Beishi Fang* is effective. If there is only hypochondriac pain without other symptoms, pain on the left indicates pathogenic invasion of the Liver Meridian, suitable for Chuanxiong, Zhike, and Gancao; pain on the right indicates Liver disease transferring to the Lung, suitable for Pian Jianghuang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma), Zhike, Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), and Gancao. These two formulas are from Yan Shi's *Jisheng Xuji*.
