Pain caused by food stagnation refers to what the *Classic of Internal Medicine* (*Huangdi Neijing*) describes as "when food and drink intake doubles, the spleen and stomach are injured." Its symptoms include nausea, aversion to food, acid regurgitation, and belching with a putrid odor; the pulse is typically deep and forceful. Treatment should be differentiated according to the location within the Triple Burner: if located in the Upper Burner, induce vomiting; if in the Middle Burner, promote digestion and resolution; if in the Lower Burner, purge downward.
Vomiting Formula:
Take half a sheng of calcined salt, mix with five or six sheng of warm water, and ingest to induce vomiting.
Wu Hegao stated: Whenever abdominal pain radiates to the hypochondrium and diaphragm, accompanied by cold extremities and a deep, hidden pulse, it is mostly due to food retention or phlegm-fluid obstructing the Zhiyin (Supreme Yin), suppressing the ascending Qi of Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) and preventing its smooth distribution. When pathogenic factors and healthy Qi contend, pain ensues; cold limbs and a hidden pulse are both manifestations of Yang Qi being enclosed and concealed. The Classic states: "When Wood is stagnant, disperse it." Therefore, the vomiting method is employed; since salty flavor can soften hardness, calcined salt is used.
Digestion-Promoting Formula:
Take the remnants of the consumed food, burn them into powder, and administer one fangcun bi (a traditional measure for powder) with wine. (If the stagnation is from meat, burn the meat residue into powder; however, it must be the specific type of food eaten that is burned into powder to be effective. — Note by Henian)
Another formula for treating indigestion of mixed foods resulting in solid accumulation, with hard and painful abdomen:
One sheng of white salt, boiled in three sheng of water. Ingest to induce vomiting or purging, which will stabilize the condition.
Purging Formula:
Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 大黄), Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Ganjiang, 干姜), Fructus Crotonis Tiglii (Badou, 巴豆) [skin and heart removed, ground and pressed to remove oil], equal parts.
Make honey pills the size of small beans. Administer one pill with warm water. For those with excess conditions, add one more pill. If there is no improvement, take three pills. When bowel sounds are heard and movement occurs downwards with defecation, the condition resolves. This treats sudden severe pain in the heart and abdomen caused by excessive consumption of cold-dietary injuries, feeling like needle pricks. If the injury is from damp-heat substances, leading to inability to digest, chest oppression, restlessness, and constipation, use Houpo Sanwu Tang (Magnolia Bark Three-Ingredient Decoction) or Zhishi Daozhi Wan (Immature Bitter Orange Stagnation-Resolving Pill), which are beneficial.
Houpo Sanwu Tang (Magnolia Bark Three-Ingredient Decoction):
Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (Houpo, 厚朴) [two liang, roasted and skin removed], Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhishi, 枳实) [two pieces, large ones, roasted], Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 大黄) [four liang].
Use two dou of water. First decoct Zhishi and Houpo until reduced to five sheng. Then add Dahuang and decoct to obtain two sheng. Take one sheng warm. Stop when bowel movement is achieved.
Pain caused by dead blood (blood stasis) often results from emotional depression/anger and vigorous running immediately after a full meal. The pain has a fixed location, and the pulse is necessarily thready and choppy. For mild cases, harmonize; for severe cases, purge downward.
Taoren Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction to Order the Qi):
Semen Persicae (Taoren, 桃仁) [50 seeds, skin and tips removed], Ramulus Cinnamomi (Guizhi, 桂枝) [two liang, skin removed], Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 大黄) [four liang], Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 芒硝) [two liang], Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao, 甘草) [roasted, two liang].
The above five ingredients are decocted in seven sheng of water to obtain two and a half sheng. Strain out the dregs, add Mangxiao, heat again until slightly boiling, then remove from fire. Take five he warm before meals, three times daily. A slight purgation should occur. For deficiency patterns, add Dihuang Miwan (Rehmannia Honey Pill) to gently eliminate the stasis.
Another prescription:
Human hair from women, burned to ash, finely ground and sifted. Mix with warm wine and ingest two qian. During the Yuanfeng era, Chancellor Wang Xungong suffered from lower abdominal pain. Imperial physicians treated him with various medicines without success, but this prescription cured him immediately.
