Gui Mi disease is caused by insufficient Heart Qi and weakened spirit, where dark yin-cold qi takes advantage of the deficiency to invade. The patient manifests with inconstant joy and anger, a trance-like state as if intoxicated, or muttering deliriously, terrified, weeping before walls, frequent nightmares, feeling interactions with spirits, alternating chills and fever, abdominal fullness, shortness of breath, and loss of appetite. Palpation reveals the Renying (ST9) and Qikou (LU9) pulses fluctuating between large and small; this is the sign of being possessed by Gui Mei (spirits/demons).
Gui Ji disease arises without gradual onset. It strikes suddenly like an injury from spears or halberds, causing acute pain and fullness in the chest, hypochondrium, and abdomen that cannot be pressed or suppressed. It may lead to immediate hematemesis (vomiting blood) or hematochezia/melena (bleeding from below). Mild cases recover, but severe cases may be incurable. Treatment should employ talismanic spells alongside herbs that dispel evil and stabilize righteousness.
Formula for treating Gui Mi coma:
Xionghuang (Realgar), single herb, ground into powder, blown into both nostrils for cure.
Anxi Xiang (Boswellia Karriensis Resin), taken in a size equivalent to a soap bean, burned until smoke rises, causing the evil to retreat.
Formula for treating demon-possessed patients who do not speak:
Sheng Lu Jiao (Deer Antler, raw), single herb, ground into fine powder. Take one qian per dose; speaking one sentence leads to cure.
Formula for treating sudden attack of Gui Ji:
Ji Guan Xue (Rooster Comb Blood), single herb, dripped into the mouth to be swallowed. Then slaughter a chicken, split it open, and apply it to the epigastrium. Discard on the roadside when cold.
*Zhou Hou Fang* treats various Gui Ji diseases, where sudden onset feels like knife stabbing, with severe pain in chest, hypochondrium, and abdomen, unbearable to pressure, accompanied by hematemesis, epistaxis, or lower bleeding. Also known as Gui Pai. Blowing strong wine into both nostrils is effective.
*Qian Jin Fang* prescribes blowing a small amount of vinegar into the nostrils.
Kuang Bing (Mania) is mostly due to Fire and belongs to Yang. It may result from frustrated ambitions or prolonged worry and depression, where grievances cannot be expressed and anger cannot be vented, leading to counterflow of Liver and Gallbladder Qi. Wood and Fire combine to pathogenically affect the Heart, causing the Hun (Ethereal Soul) and Shen (Spirit) to lose their residence, or affect the Stomach, causing violent and rigid behavior. Therefore, treatment prioritizes clearing Fire. If Phlegm or Qi stagnation exists, treat them concurrently based on severity.
Sheng Tie Luo Yin (Raw Iron Filings Decoction): Treats Phlegm-Fire Mania, sinking Phlegm and calming the Heart.
Sheng Tie (Raw Iron, 40 jin): Heated red in fire, hammered on an anvil. The falling fragments resembling orchids or moths are called Tie Luo (Iron Filings). Boil two dou of water with these filings to obtain one dou of decoction, used to decoct other herbs.
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 liang), Long Chi (Dragon Teeth, crushed), Fu Ling (Poria), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, each 1.5 liang), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root, each 1 liang), Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 1 sheng).
Chop the herbs, add the iron decoction, boil to obtain five sheng, filter dregs, mix in Bamboo Sap. Warm take two he, five times daily.
Note: This method uses heavy sedation to direct Qi downward and cold to suppress Heat. Yi Lao treated a case of Yang Jue (Yang Reversal) with mania, cursing, singing, or crying, with powerless six-pulse positions and icy skin surface, screaming loudly during attacks. By withholding food and administering Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Yellow Court Decoction) to purge, several dou of feces were expelled over five to seven days. The body warmed, pulses returned, and the patient recovered. Sheng Tie Luo Yin suppresses formless upward-raging Fire, whereas Da Cheng Qi Tang purges formless internal-stagnant Heat.
Zhen Zhu Wan (Pearl Pill, from *Ben Shi Fang*): Treats Liver channel deficiency with internal Wind invasion, where the Hun scatters during sleep and fails to reside, resembling palpitations.
Zhen Zhu (Pearl, 3 fen, separately ground extremely fine), Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, each 1.5 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Bai Ren (Prini Semen), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Fu Shen (Poria with Pine Root), Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum), Long Chi (Dragon Teeth, each 1 liang).
Grind into fine powder, honey-pill sized like wutong seeds, coated with Chen Sha (Cinnabar). Take 40-50 pills per dose, washed down with Yinjin Bohe Tang (Silver Mint Decoction), once at noon and once at midnight.
Scholar Xu stated: The Liver stores the Hun. Wandering Hun causes transformation. In healthy people, the Liver does not accept pathogens, so the Hun returns to the Liver during sleep, the Spirit remains quiet, and sleep is achieved. Now, with pathogenic factors in the Liver, the Hun cannot return, causing the sensation of the Hun flying away from the body during sleep. This formula uses Mother-of-Pearl Shell (Zhen Zhu Mu) as the sovereign herb, supported by Dragon Teeth. Mother-of-Pearl Shell enters the Liver primarily; Dragon Teeth shares the same nature as the Liver. Dragon Teeth and Tiger Eyes are commonly regarded as heart-calming agents today, but one must know that Dragon Teeth calms the Hun, while Tiger Eyes stabilizes the Po (Corporeal Soul). This is based on symbolic correspondence. The Eastern Azure Dragon is Wood, corresponding to the Liver which stores the Hun; the Western White Tiger is Metal, corresponding to the Lung which stores the Po. The Dragon changes and transforms, hence the Hun wanders and is unstable; the Tiger focuses and specializes, hence the Po stays and has residence. I believe treating unstable Po requires Tiger Eyes, while treating flying Hun requires Dragon Teeth. All things have inherent principles; understanding them depends on human insight.
Ning Zhi Gao (Peace the Mind Paste, from *Ben Shi Fang*):
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, each 1 liang), Chen Sha (Cinnabar, 5 qian), Ru Xiang (Olibanum, 2.5 qian).
Honey-pill sized like bullet seeds. Take one pill per dose, washed down with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction). One variation adds Hu Po (Amber), Fu Shen (Poria with Pine Root), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), and Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), named Ren Shen Hu Po Wan (Ginseng Amber Pill). Another variation omits Ginseng and mixes with wine, named Ling Yuan Chen Sha San (Ling Garden Cinnabar Powder).
A monk suddenly suffered from Dian Ji (Epilepsy/Mental Disorder), unable to sleep. Various medicines failed. Sun Zhao said, "He will sleep tonight and recover in two days. Provide him with salty food freely. When he becomes thirsty, bring him to me." At night, the monk was indeed thirsty. Sun Zhao mixed medicine with warm wine (one cup) and gave it to him. After a while, he asked for more wine; Sun Zhao gave half a cup. The monk slept deeply, waking up after two days fully conscious. When asked why, Sun Zhao replied, "Humans can calm the Spirit but cannot induce unconscious sleep. This is Ling Yuan Chen Sha San, which people fail to utilize correctly."
Xu Shuwei stated: My clan brother lost his mind due to war/fire. I prepared Ning Zhi Gao for him. After taking twenty pills, he recovered. Relatives and friends passed it on, and all found it effective. *Ling Yuan* states: After taking Cinnabar Powder, ensure the patient lies quietly and is not startled awake. Wait for natural awakening, then the Spirit and Hun will settle. If startled awake, recovery may be impossible. Wu Zhengfu, in his youth, took this medicine for heart disease, slept for five days, and then recovered.
An Shen Wan (Calming the Spirit Pill): Treats Dian Xian (Epilepsy), Jing Kuang (Frightful Mania), and Tan Huo (Phlegm-Fire) syndromes; calms the Heart and Spirit.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, wine-fried), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, wine-fried), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum, ginger-processed, each 1 liang), Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusae Concretio Silicea, 5 qian), Xiong Huang (Realgar), Niu Huang (Bovis Calculus, each 2 qian), Hu Po (Amber), Zhen Zhu (Pearl, each 2 qian).
Grind into powder, honey-pill sized like tung seeds, coated with Zhu Sha (Cinnabar). Take 50 pills with rice drink. Avoid wind-aggravating and pungent-hot foods.
*Ben Shi Fang* Jing Qi Wan (Startle Qi Pill):
Treats accumulated Qi from fright and sorrow, Wind pathogen affecting the Heart. Attacks manifest as locked jaw, phlegm-saliva obstruction, and post-awakening mental dullness resembling dementia.
Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Nan Mu Xiang (Agarwood), Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), Bai Hua She (Bungarus Parvus), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, each 5 qian), Su Zi (Perillae Fructus, 1 liang), Gan Xie (Scorpio, 1 fen), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, washed/soaked, thinly sliced, soaked in ginger juice overnight, 0.5 liang), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar, 1 fen).
Grind into powder, add small amounts of Long Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) and She Xiang (Moschus), grind uniformly. Honey-pill sized like longan seeds. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in Yinjin Bohe Tang (Silver Mint Decoction).
Xu Shuwei stated: This is my family's secret formula. In the year Wu Wu, a soldier in the army committed an offense, was stripped awaiting execution, but was pardoned. His spirit was lost, resembling dementia. I gave him one pill. After taking it, he slept. Upon waking, the illness had vanished. The wife of Zhang Zaiyang, Inspector General of Shandong, had lost her mind for years due to fleeing bandits. I prescribed this formula; she recovered before finishing the dosage. Yan's wife, patrol officer of Huangshan, suffered from Kuang Jue (Maniacal Reversal) for over a year, failing treatments by over ten physicians. I prescribed this formula removing Fu Zi and adding Tie Fen (Iron Powder); she also recovered before finishing the dosage. Iron Powder not only resolves phlegm and calms the Heart but is uniquely effective in suppressing Liver pathogenic factors. For excessive anger and severe Liver pathogenic factors, Iron Powder can subdue them. *Su Wen* states: Jue Yang Mania is treated with Tie Luo Yin (Iron Filings Decoction), following the principle of Metal controlling Wood.
Fu Ling Wan (Poria Pill):
Chen Sha (Cinnabar), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Fu Shen (Poria with Pine Root), Tie Fen (Iron Powder), Ban Xia Qu (Pinelliae Fermentatum), Dan Xing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), equal parts.
Grind into fine powder. Extract juice from four liang of fresh Ginger, mix with water to form pills sized like tung seeds. Coat with Zhu Sha (Cinnabar). Take 10 pills initially, increasing to 20 pills, washed down with Ginger Decoction before bed. This is the formula of Medical Officer Du Jun. I have used it successfully for heart diseases.
Zhen Xin Wan (Settling the Heart Pill): Treats Xin Feng (Wind affecting the Heart), delirious speech with frequent fright, confusion, and trance.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Fu Shen (Poria with Pine Root), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, each 1 liang), Niu Huang (Bovis Calculus), Qian Fen (Lead Powder, each 7.5 qian), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar, water-triturated), Long Chi (Dragon Teeth, crushed), Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix), Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusae Concretio Silicea, crushed), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, each 0.5 liang), Jin Bo (Gold Leaf, 50 pieces), Tie Fen (Iron Powder, 7.5 qian, crushed).
Grind into powder, honey-pill sized like tung seeds. Take 7 pills per dose, sent down with Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction), anytime.
Wen Dan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction, from *San Yin Fang*): Treats Heart deficiency and Gallbladder timidity, easily frightened by events, bad dreams, shortness of breath, palpitations, spontaneous sweating, delirium, insomnia, and startle upon closing eyes. This results from Qi stagnation generating Phlegm-Saliva, which struggles with Qi, producing various symptoms.
Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, each 1 liang), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1.5 liang), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, 4 qian).
Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1.5 cups of water, 7 slices of fresh Ginger, one Jujube. Decoct to 0.7 portion.
Shi Wei Wen Dan Tang (Ten-Ingredient Warm the Gallbladder Decoction): Indicated for the above symptoms complicated by deficiency.
Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white part removed, each 2 qian), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried), Yuan Zhi Rou (Polygalae Radix flesh, processed with Licorice Decoction), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, wine-dried), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, each 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 1.5 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, 0.5 qian).
Add two zhong of water, five slices of fresh Ginger, one Red Jujube. Decoct to one zhong and consume.
Gun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill, Wang Yin Jun): (See Phlegm Section.)
Note: Dian Kuang (Epilepsy and Mania) diseases belong to the binding of Phlegm and Heat, mostly located in the Liver, Gallbladder, and Bao Luo (Pericardium collaterals). When encountering such cases, I often administer Meng Shi Gun Tan Wan (Fluorite Rolling Phlegm Pill), 2-3 qian. Expelling sticky phlegm resembling peach gum or clam meat, about five sheng, leads to recovery. If there is little Phlegm but much Heat, with Yangming internal excess, one should follow Luo Qianfu's treatment for Chousiwulan: using Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Yellow Court Decoction) 1.5 liang plus Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 2 qian to purge Heat, ensuring bowel movement and sweating for recovery.
Chou Bao Wan (Chou Treasure Pill): Treats all types of Dian Xian (Epilepsy), Zheng Chong (Palpitations), convulsions, and difficult-to-treat diseases. Dispels Wind, clears Fire, resolves Phlegm, regulates Qi, opens the Heart, stabilizes Will, calms the Spirit, and settles Fright.
Miao Xiang Wan (Wonderful Fragrance Pill): Treats Jing Xian (Frightful Epilepsy) and hundred diseases; also treats Tai Yang Shang Han (Cold Damage) tidal fever, accumulated heat, Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) with jaundice, manic running with dry heat, and obstruction of urination and defecation.
Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, 315 grains, peel/core/membrane removed, stir-fried ripe, ground like flour), Niu Huang (Bovis Calculus, crushed), Ni Fen (White Mercury), Long Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum, crushed), She Xiang (Moschus, crushed, each 3 liang), Chen Sha (Cinnabar, floated, 9 liang), Jin Bo (Gold Leaf, 90 pieces, crushed).
Grind uniformly. Refine 6 liang of yellow beeswax, add 3 parts white honey, refine together until uniform. Form pills. Each liang makes 30 pills. Take 2 pills with warm water, twice daily.
Tong Xian San (Unblocking Saliva Powder): Treats sudden persistent Dian Kuang (Epilepsy/Mania), or sudden violent Wind-Phlegm, Qi blockage causing collapse.
Gua Di (Thunbergiae Fructus, 5 qian).
Grind into powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed well water. Cure occurs when saliva exits. If none exits, hold a piece of rock sugar in the mouth; swallowing induces saliva exit.
He Nian stated: I treated a man in Qingshui Bay, Kunshan, suffering from mania. First, I acupunctured Bai Hui (GV20), Shen Ting (GV24), and Ren Zhong (GV26). Then, I administered Shu Qi (Jericho Thorn Apple Herb, water-mixed stir-fried ripe, 1 qian), Long Gu (Fossilized Bones), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, each 3 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 0.5 qian), Sheng Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma Raw, 3 qian), decocted in water. One dose brought peace.
Note: Kuang Syndrome (Mania) invariably originates from Fright. Long Chi (Dragon Teeth) best calms the Hun. There is no case without Phlegm. Fright causes Qi counterflow; Qi counterflow causes Phlegm accumulation. Shu Qi (Jericho Thorn Apple Herb) best劫 (snatches/resolves) Phlegm. There is no case without Fire. Fire nature flares upward, causing climbing and singing, discarding clothes. Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) drains Heart Fire. The disease belongs to Yangming, hence Da Huang (Rhubarb) is used to purge it. This is the method of drawing firewood from under the cauldron. (He Nian.)
