It is absolutely inadvisable to treat this as a Wind syndrome and use Wind-dispelling herbs.
The etiology involves Damp-Heat, Phlegm-Turbidity, deficiency due to Blood insufficiency, Qi weakness, and Blood stasis.
If caused by Damp-Heat, in Dongyuan's Jianbu Fang (Strengthening Legs Decoction), add herbs that dry Dampness and descend Deficient Fire, such as Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma).
If caused by Damp-Phlegm, in Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction), add Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Zhu Li (Bambusae Sap).
If caused by Qi deficiency, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with added Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex).
If caused by Blood deficiency, in Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), add Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), or select Buyin Wan (Nourish Yin Pill).
There are also cases where Food Stagnation obstructs the descent of Qi. There are also cases caused by Dead Blood (Blood Stasis).
Jianbu Wan (Strengthening Legs Pill) Formula:
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huashi (Talcum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed with honey), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix, processed with wine, each 0.5 liang), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 3 qian), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 0.5 qian), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, processed with wine, each 1 qian).
Grind the above into powder, mix with wine paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 70 pills per dose, decoct Yufeng Tang (Extinguish Wind Decoction), and swallow on an empty stomach.
(Yin deficiency syndromes are difficult to treat.)
Dai Yun stated: Whenever the pulse is rapid yet forceless, it indicates Yin deficiency.
For fever due to Yin deficiency, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with added Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex). If accompanied by Qi deficiency, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). This is because Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) is an excellent method for descending fire and nourishing Yin.
He further stated: For fever due to Yin deficiency, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction). In severe cases, add Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) and fried Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex).
Fever in individuals who consume alcohol is difficult to treat.
Even for non-drinkers, if fever arises from alcohol consumption, it is also difficult to treat.
A thirty-year-old man developed fever after drinking alcohol. He was treated with Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Gualouren (Trichosanthis Semen), and Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), placed several spoonfuls into his mouth daily, and recovered in three days.
Dai Yun stated: When there is severe aversion to cold in the back, and the pulse is floating, large, yet forceless, it indicates Yang deficiency. Use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix). In severe cases, add a small amount of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) to facilitate the movement of Qi from Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix).
A woman suffering from aversion to cold was treated with Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, 1 qian) and Chixiaodou (Vigna Angularis Semen), ground into powder, and induced to vomit using vinegar water. Alternatively, she was treated with Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Jiuqu (Medicated Leaven) formed into pills.
Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, used raw), ground into powder, and formed into pills using Medicated Leaven paste.
