For treating pain in the interosseous spaces caused by sprains and dislocations, as well as patients suffering from cold-dampness who fear acupuncture: Use 3 qian of Agarwood (Aquilariae Lignum), 3 qian of Costus Root (Aucklandiae Radix), 3 qian of Frankincense (Olibanum), 3 qian of Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), 3 qian of Notopterygium Rhizome (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), 3 qian of Dried Ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and 3 qian of Pangolin Scales (Pangolini Squama), along with a small amount of Moschus and 2 liang of Qiai (Artemisiae Argyi Folium). Take half a chi of cotton paper, first spread the Mugwort and Artemisia Scoparia on it, then sprinkle the powdered herbs inside and roll it extremely tightly for storage. Press to locate the painful acupoint, mark it with a pen, and cover the acupoint with 6-7 layers of paper externally. Ignite the rolled mugwort-herb cylinder; this is called the Thunder-Fire Needle (Leihuo Zhen). Utilize the True Fire of the Sun (solar heat focused via lens), using either a spherical mirror or a bead mirror to ignite it until red-hot, then press it onto the marked acupoint. Leave it there for a considerable time, then lift it off, trim the ash, re-ignite, and re-press. Repeat this process nine times for recovery.
Wulingzhi (Trogopteri Dung, 8 qian, raw), Douzi Qingyan (Rock Salt, 5 qian, raw), Ruxiang (Frankincense, 1 qian), Moyao (Myrrh, 1 qian), Tianshu Fen (Civet Cat Excrement/Yeming Sha, 2 qian, slightly stir-fried), Dishu Fen (Mole Excrement, 3 qian, slightly stir-fried), Congtou (Scallion Bulb/Dry, 2 qian), Mutong (Akebia Stem, 3 qian), Shexiang (Moschus, a small amount).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with water and flour to form a circular paste, place it on the umbilicus (Shenque, CV8). Place 2 qian of the aforementioned herb powder into the umbilical cavity. Cover the powder with a coin-shaped piece cut from Catalpa Bark (Huai Pi). Apply moxibustion over it. Moxa cones should be applied once per year of age (one Zhuang), replacing the medicine and bark as needed. By selecting dates according to the following guidelines, one absorbs the righteous Qi of Heaven and Earth's Yin-Yang, nourishes the Five Zang Organs, prevents invasion by various pathogens, avoids myriad diseases, promotes longevity, and strengthens the Spleen and Stomach.
Select Si Hour at Start of Spring (Lichun), Wei Hour at Spring Equinox (Chunfen), Chen Hour at Start of Summer (Lixia), You Hour at Summer Solstice (Xiazhi), Xu Hour at Start of Autumn (LiQiu), Wu Hour at Autumn Equinox (Qiufen), Hai Hour at Start of Winter (Lidong), and Yin Hour at Winter Solstice (Dongzhi). This aligns with the righteous Qi of the four seasons and the creation of Heaven and Earth; moxibustion performed thus will invariably be effective.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: Moxibustion may only be performed after noon, because the Yin Qi has not yet arrived, ensuring the moxa takes effect immediately. In the morning before noon, when Gu Qi (Grain Qi) is deficient, one may experience mental confusion or mania; acupuncture and moxibustion are contraindicated during this time. However, this rule does not apply to acute emergencies.
The *Xia Jing* states: If encountering fog, heavy wind/snow, torrential rain, extreme heat, thunder/lightning, or rainbows during moxibustion, wait for clear weather before proceeding. Acute difficulties are exempt from this restriction.
Furthermore, regarding the flow of Qi through meridians at specific hours: At Noon (Wu Hour), Qi enters the Heart Meridian; at Wei Hour, it enters the Small Intestine Meridian. At these times, only Ji Quan (HT1), Shao Hai (HT3), Ling Dao (HT4), Tong Li (HT5), Shen Men (HT7), Shao Fu (HT8), and Shao Chong (HT9) may be moxibusted. The statement in the *Qianjin Fang* regarding "afternoon moxibustion" is likely not the authentic teaching of Sun Simiao.
