Among all meridians, the profoundest is the most profound, and the most subtle is the most subtle. Even physicians, Confucian scholars, and sages of the Nine Schools praise Yuèrén (Bian Que) for reviving the dead, advocating techniques such as acupuncture, intestinal surgery, and heart drainage; Hua Tuo scraping bone to remove poison; Li Zhongxiao diagnosing by observing complexion and listening to sounds; Wang Shuhe specializing in pulse diagnosis; Zhang Zhongjing regulating four-season cold damage; Qiufu treating demonic afflictions; Wang Zuan using acupuncture on the waist; Sun Simiao composing the *Qianjin Fang*; and Yi Fangyin creating life-saving arts. Humans have 444 diseases, and there are 888 types of herbs, each with its own origin and principles, including the "Six Old Herbs" and "Eighteen Incompatible Medicaments," processing methods like frying and roasting, and the hierarchy of Sovereign, Minister, Assistant, and Courier in dosage. All depend on hand-respiration coordination, relying entirely on acupuncture tonification and sedation techniques. Acupuncture has the power to move mountains, and herbs have divine efficacy.
Acupuncture is an ancient method cultivating spiritual神通 (supernatural powers), penetrating the mysteries of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, capable of reviving the dead like a god. Shennong, Huangdi, and Bian Que knew gratitude; Liu Gaozu was a virtuous ruler. Xuanyuan Huangdi, as a Daoist adept, relied entirely on the efficacy of acupuncture tonification and sedation. In the year of Wuwu, month of Wuwu, day of Wuwu, hour of Wuwu, when a red horse held iron in its mouth, he sat upright with twelve needles.
The first needle is named Qinglong Needle (Azure Dragon Needle), one chi two cun long, corresponding to the twelve months of a year.
The second needle is named Baihu Needle (White Tiger Needle), nine cun long, corresponding to the nine stars: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth, Taiyin, Yuebei, and Luojie.
The third needle is named Sangmen Needle (Funeral Door Needle), eight cun long, corresponding to the Eight Trigrams: Qian, Kan, Gen, Zhen, Xun, Li, Kun, Dui.
These three needles are rarely understood in the world; they are used by immortals. These needles cause mountains to collapse, earth to crack, seawater to flow backward, and dead bones to regenerate upon needling. King Wen of Zhou therefore banned these three needles. Later, nine needles were left in the world for human use.
1. Ping Needle (Flat Needle): Half-cun thick, one cun six fen long, with a large head and sharp tip. Suitable for heat in the head and body.
2. Yuan Needle (Round Needle): Round body, tip shaped like an egg, one cun six fen long. Suitable for fullness of Qi in the flesh layers.
3. Di Needle (Tip Needle): Tip sharp like millet grains, three cun five fen long. Suitable for deficiency of vessel Qi.
4. Feng Needle (Sharp Needle): Three corners, one cun six fen long. Used to drain heat and bleed, expelling stubborn diseases.
5. Pi Needle (Sword Needle): Also called Po Needle, tip like a sword blade, two cun half wide, four cun long. Used to break abscesses and discharge pus and blood.
6. Yuanli Needle (Round-Acute Needle): Pointed like a hair, round yet acute, slightly larger in the middle, one cun six fen long. Used to harmonize Yin and Yang, removing acute accumulations.
7. Hao Needle (Hair Needle): Modeled after a hair, tip like a mosquito or horsefly proboscis, three cun six fen long. Used to regulate meridians and eliminate diseases.
8. Chang Needle (Long Needle): Sharp and acute, seven cun long. For bi syndrome deep in bone joints and spinal aponeurosis.
9. Fan Needle (Cautery Needle): Also called Cui Needle, four cun long. For wind and deficiency combining in bone joints and skin.
These nine needles correspond upward to the Five Stars and downward to the Four Seasons. The Five Stars are Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. The Four Seasons are Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.
These needles also correspond to Skin, Flesh, Vessels, Tendons, Five Tones, Yin-Yang, Teeth, Wind, and Orifices—nine aspects.
Each needle has specific disease-treating abilities. Ping Needle treats head wind and facial wind-pain. Yuan Needle opens interior and exterior, treating eye diseases. Di Needle regulates meridians, nourishing Yin and tonifying Yang. Chang Needle treats tendon and bone pain. Fan Needle tonifies deficiency-cold of the lower yuan in men and women.
There are thousands of tonification and sedation techniques: finger tonification/sedation, lifting-pressing tonification/sedation, left-right tonification/sedation, Yin-Yang tonification/sedation, needle-head tonification/sedation, deficiency-excess tonification/sedation, respiration tonification/sedation, ascending-descending Qi tonification/sedation, deficiency-excess following tonification/sedation, deficiency-excess lifting tonification/sedation, deficiency-excess pressing tonification/sedation, deficiency-excess flicking tonification/sedation, deficiency-excess HT tonification/sedation, deficiency-excess twisting tonification/sedation, advancing-retreating tonification/sedation, clockwise-counter-clockwise rocking tonification/sedation, scraping-shaking tonification/sedation, Mother-Child tonification/sedation, deficiency-excess grasping tonification/sedation, buying Qi floating-sinking tonification/sedation, slippery-sluggish Qi tonification/sedation, tight-thin Qi tonification/sedation, turning needle tonification/sedation, uniform tonification/sedation, self-withdrawal tonification/sedation, seasonal moxa tonification/sedation, pre-noon/post-noon tonification/sedation, Start of Winter tonification/sedation, wind-rain tonification/sedation, evening-morning tonification/sedation, Zi-Wu tonification/sedation, abdominal coiling resonance tonification/sedation, ascending Yang/Yin tonification/sedation, cold-heat tonification/sedation, sweating/vomiting/purging tonification/sedation. Thousands of techniques are hard to exhaust in words; they rely on mind-to-mind transmission and oral instruction. One exhalation and inhalation come like rolling rivers; one press and lift open like a crossbow. During one exhalation, pulse moves three cun; during one inhalation, pulse moves three cun. At the pause between breaths, pulse moves six cun. After three to five breaths, Ying and Wei Qi circulate fully around the body. Correct methods verify according to meridians. Although it cannot revive dead bones, acupuncture takes effect at the precise moment. Needling the Yangming meridian involves three insertions without stopping; needling Yin meridians does not harm the five Zang organs. Massage and Daoyin are miraculous methods and divine mechanisms.
