Cui Zhiti stated in the preface: Gu Zheng (Bone Steaming Disease), also known as Chuan Shi (Transmitting Corpse Disease). It is also called Lao Zhai (Consumptive Disease). It is also called Fu Lian. It is also called Wu Gu. Men take Jing Qi (Essence and Qi) as their root, and women take Xue Qi (Blood and Qi) as their foundation. Regardless of age, many are infected with this disease. I once cured thirteen people through moxibustion, and the number of those healed before and after exceeded two hundred.
It is not limited to taking Si Hua Xue (Four Flower Acupoints [Geshu, Dushu]), using a rice straw core to measure how wide the mouth seam is, cutting it to that length, and cutting paper into a square of such length with a small hole in the center. Take another piece of straw; the end point corresponds to the center of the previous small-hole paper, dividing it into four parts, which are the locations of the Four Flower acupoints, i.e., the four corners of the paper for moxibustion.
Another doctor transmitted a method: first measure horizontally across the mouth corners to get the length. Use this measured straw to measure vertically from below the third thoracic vertebra on the back until the straw ends, marking both ends with a pen. Then measure the length of the middle finger as a standard. Use the straw measuring the middle finger to measure horizontally and vertically at the two ends, circling four corners with a pen. The circled points are the acupoints. (Points not circled are not acupoints.) Moxibustion can be performed up to 49 cones.

Gaohuangshu (BL43) treats emaciation and deficiency, nocturnal emission, and is effective for all ailments. (*Tongren*) Shenshu (BL23) treats Xu Lao Lei Shou (Deficiency Labor Emaciation), deafness, long-standing cold in the Kidney Water Organ. (*Mingtang* mentions lower back pain). Heart and abdominal distension, hypochondriac fullness radiating to lower abdominal pain, blurred vision, shortness of breath, hematuria, turbid urine, seminal emission, genital pain, Wu Lao Qi Shang Xu Bei (Wu Labor, Qi Injury, Deficiency and Exhaustion), stiff and cramped knees and feet. (*Mingtang* mentions preference for sleeping alone). Feet cold as ice, heavy head, body heat with shivering, soreness and weakness in the waist and four limbs, profuse diarrhea with undigested food, edema like water. The lower part of *Mingtang* says: treats body chills and fever, eating much but becoming emaciated, sallow and dark complexion, blurred vision. Long-standing cold Qi accumulation in women leads to labor. Naokong (GB13) treats labor diseases, emaciation, body heat, and neck stiffness. Zhangmen (LR13) treats overeating injury, yellowing of the body, and emaciation. Lougu (SP9) treats inability of food and drink to nourish the flesh. Xiaguan (ST67 - Note: Text likely refers to Xiawan/Xiaguan confusion or specific local term, literal translation used) treats gradual emaciation. (See Pi Mass). Xiaguan, (See Abdominal Distension). Weishu (BL21), (See Deficiency). Pishu (BL20), Xialian (BL39), (See Sun Xie [Undigested Food Diarrhea]). Treats emaciation. Pediatric emaciation, little food intake, failure to gain flesh. Moxibustion on Weishu for one cone. (*Mingtang* lower volume) Moxibustion Method for Labor. Symptoms include heat in palms and soles, night sweats, mental exhaustion, bone and joint pain with cold, initial cough, gradually expectorating pus and blood, muscular emaciation, sallow face, reduced appetite and strength. Have the patient sit upright. Use a grass seed/straw: for men left, for women right, measure from the tip of the middle toe across the sole upward to the popliteal crease, then cut. Take this straw and measure from the nose tip, starting from the center of the head parting hair against the skin, down to the spine. Mark the end of the straw with ink. Take another strip of straw, have the patient close their mouth naturally to measure width, then cut. Use this straw to fold flat at the ink mark, measuring the acupoint at the ends. During moxibustion, add one cone per year of age. (e.g., if thirty years old, moxa thirty-one cones). Repeatedly effective. (*Jixiao Fang*)
Emaciation is indeed a symptom of Lao Zhai (Consumptive Disease), presenting with symptoms such as chills and fever. Treatment should follow the syndrome differentiation. If one was naturally thin, it is not necessarily a disease. Only when severe emaciation occurs after illness and does not recover to normal state for a long time, it is called Xing Tuo (Form Depletion). And when one was previously plump but suddenly becomes emaciated with reduced diet, other diseases may have taken advantage, making it difficult to save. Early differentiation is necessary, and moxibustion should be applied. However, Zhang Zhongjing discussed Liu Ji (Six Extremes), stating: Jing Ji (Extreme Essence depletion) causes people to have little Qi and no strength, gradually becoming internally deficient, lacking luster, slightly emaciated, eyes lacking spirit. He also stated that Bawei Shenqi Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) can treat Liu Ji, and treating Wu Lao is what Bawei Wan should be taken for. (Zhang Zhongjing's commonly used formula or removing Aconite and adding Schisandra). The Shenshu acupoints and others especially require moxibustion.
Pishu (BL20) and Dachangshu (BL25) govern abdominal Qi distension, pain radiating to the spine, eating much but becoming emaciated, named Shi Hui (Food Obscurity). First select Pishu, then select the costal margin acupoints. Fullness of heart and abdomen from the five Zang and six Fu organs, lower back and back pain, vomiting and regurgitation of food, alternating chills and fever, difficult urination, emaciation and shortness of breath. Moxibustion on Sanjiaoshu (BL22) according to age cones. (*Qianjin*)
