Brain deficiency cold, brain nasal bleeding (nosebleed originating from the head/brain area), wind-cold invading the brain, and long-standing headache, etc. Moxibustion at Xinhui (CV22) is also suitable.
When I was past my prime, reading books on cold nights, I often felt my brain was cold; after drinking excessively, my brain would also hurt severely. Later, I was cured by moxibustion at this acupoint. A soldier suffered from nosebleeds and loss of smell/taste, so I recorded this to supplement the gaps in treatment. However, considering that Naohu (GV16) should not be needled, Xinhui (CV22) should also not be needled. The *Needling Classic* (*Zhenjing*) only states that children under eight years old should not be needled here, which I fear is not comprehensive enough.
For those who have no appetite for food, abdominal distension, sallow complexion, commonly referred to as Spleen-Kidney disease, moxibustion at Zhongwan (CV12) is suitable.
Zhuge Liang rose early and slept late, personally reviewing even punishments of twenty strokes, yet his food intake did not reach several sheng (a unit of volume). Sima Zhida knew he was about to die. Soon after, Liang died. Zhida said, "I can predict his life, but not his death." By saying he could predict his life, it implies predicting that his affairs were numerous while his diet was less than before, which is a sign of impending death. Since Sima Zhida knew Zhuge Liang was dying because his diet decreased, now if people eat less, it indicates their Stomach Qi is about to perish, and they cannot survive long. Yet, they continue to eat hard-to-digest foods and take harsh tonifying medicines, causing the Spleen and Stomach to become hot and further reducing appetite. They initially do not know to moxa Zhongwan and other points to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach; this is indeed very confusing. The *Nan Jing* discusses that all four seasons rely on Stomach Qi as the root. Explainers say this means all five Zang organs rely on Stomach Qi as the root. The Stomach is the sea of water and grain; humans must rely primarily on Stomach Qi. Therefore, those who wish to preserve life should moxa the stomach region.
For chronic cold damaging the Zang-Fu organs, incessant diarrhea, stroke with loss of consciousness, etc., moxibustion at Shenque (CV8) is suitable.
Old legends say someone remained youthful in appearance despite old age, likely due to moxibustion with rat feces at the navel (Shenque) once per year. I once suffered from loose stools for a long time. After three moxa cones one night, I didn't need to use the toilet the next day. Moxaing for several consecutive nights meant I didn't need to go for several days. This fully verifies the classic's statement that it treats incessant diarrhea. Additionally, when I was past my prime, I felt weakness in my left hand and foot. I accidentally moxa this point and recovered. Later, colleagues told me many stroke patients were cured by moxaing this point, either 100 or 300-500 cones. However, the classics do not state it treats Zang Qi deficiency and exhaustion, true Qi insufficiency, all Qi disorders, and chronic conditions not healing. [The *Bronze Man* states:] For these, moxibustion at Qihai (CV6) is suitable.
The human body has four seas: Qihai (Sea of Qi), Xuehai (Sea of Blood), Zhaohai (KI6), and Suihai (Sea of Marrow). Qihai is the first. Qihai is the sea of Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Humans take Yuan Qi as their root. If Yuan Qi is unharmed, disease does not harm; if Yuan Qi is injured, one dies even without disease. It is suitable to frequently moxa this point to strengthen Yuan Yang (Original Yang). If one waits until illness arises to treat Zang-Fu deficiency and lower Yuan coldness/exhaustion, it is too late.
People often say that age 49 (7x7) is when the Sidereal Year suppresses the Life Branch, and age 61 is when the Sidereal Year suppresses the Life Branch. People encountering these years often suffer misfortune, which is natural. But isn't it said that auspicious people turn misfortune into good? Frequently consulting the *Su Wen*, age 48 (6x8) is the year essence and marrow exhaust; one should restrain desires then. (*Qian Jin Fang* says those over 50 should have intercourse once a month; essentially, one should follow this principle at 48.) *Qian Jin Fang* records the *Su Nu Lun*: those over 60 should retain essence and not ejaculate; desire should be cut off. If one fails to restrain when one should, or cannot cut off when one should, and loses life because of this, it is self-inflicted. Is it the fault of the year? If one does not blame the year, even if there is disaster, it can be avoided. This is what is meant by turning misfortune into good. Even without moxaing Dantian, this applies. [Dantian can be moxaed with 49 or 300-500 cones.]
For Yang Qi deficiency and exhaustion, seminal emission, and infertility, moxibustion at Zhongji (CV3) is suitable.
Zhongji is also named Qiyuan (Source of Qi), as it is the origin of Qi. For those with deficient and exhausted Yang Qi, is it not advisable to moxa this point to replenish Qi? ([Note: The *Nan Jing* says Dantian is also called Da Zhongji, meaning Dantian is located centrally relative to the upper/lower and four directions. Hence 'Ji' (Extreme/Pole). This point is also called Zhongji, only one cun away from Dantian. Although not the absolute center like Dantian, it is not far from the center.])
Zusanli (ST36) treats Stomach cold, abdominal distension/fullness, insufficient Stomach Qi, aversion to the smell of food, borborygmus and abdominal pain, and indigestion. (*Bronze Man*). Qin Chengzu said it treats all diseases. Hua Tuo said it treats Five Exhaustions and emaciation, Seven Injuries and deficiency, chest stasis, and mastitis. (*Wai Tai Mi Yao*). *Mingtang Jing* says: For people over thirty, if Zusanli is not moxaed, Qi will rush upward to the eyes. (*Mingtang Xia Jing* says this leads to dim vision). *Qian Jin Fang* says it treats Yin Qi insufficiency, hardness of the lower abdomen, heat diseases with no sweat, bitter taste and high fever, body opisthotonos, lockjaw, severe back pain preventing looking back, insufficient Stomach Qi, chronic diarrhea, indigestion, hypochondriac fullness, inability to stand long, delirious speech, wild singing and laughing, fear, anger, cursing, cholera, enuresis, and incontinence of gas, Yang reversal with chilliness, etc. All such diseases can be treated with acupuncture and moxibustion, using up to 500 cones or as few as 200-300.
*Duan Ju* says: For limbs, only expel wind pathogen; do not moxa excessively. Limit to 7 to 49 cones, not exceeding the number corresponding to age. Thus, the *Bronze Man* only states for Zusanli: moxa 3 cones, needle 5 fen. *Mingtang Shang Jing* says daily moxa 7 cones, up to 100 cones, which is not excessive. But *Qian Jin Fang* says up to 500, down to 200-300. Why so many? Essentially, daily moxa 7 cones, or if cones are very small, up to 14 cones; over several days up to 49 cones. Once the moxa blister dries, re-moxa to comply with the saying "To maintain health, Dantian and Zusanli should never dry [heal completely]." If following *Qian Jin Fang*'s numbers, one might violate the warning in *Duan Ju*. I previously had gouty arthritis (Hong Kong jiao), with slight swelling in spring, worse in summer, subsiding in winter. One summer, following the acupoint location described in the *Su Wen* commentary, I used warm needle micro-acupuncture. The next day, the swelling disappeared. The effect was miraculous. Even Miao Ci (counter-point needling) works thus, let alone moxibustion. Those with this condition must know this. It treats not just foot swelling, but various diseases.
Yongquan (KI1) treats heart pain, anorexia, female infertility, male gu disease (parasitic wasting), and female pregnancy-like symptoms. (*Qian Jin* reads "like obstruction"). Pain at the tips of all five toes, inability to walk on feet. Acupuncture and moxibustion are suitable. (*Bronze Man*). *Qian Jin Fang* says it treats sudden forgetfulness, body and spine feeling like disintegration, difficult defecation, difficult urination, coldness from mid-foot to knee, throat pain, inability to swallow, aphonia, incessant nosebleed, etc.
*Qian Jin Fang* assigns specific indications to most points, but specifically states Gaohuang, Zusanli, and Yongquan treat miscellaneous diseases, implying these three points treat everything. However, *Mingtang Jing* warns: if moxaed, it may impair mobility. Since the goal is to cure disease, being immobile for a few days is not harmful.
Pishu (BL20) treats polyphagia with emaciation, diarrhea with heaviness, flaccidity of limbs, abdominal pain, and anorexia. (*Bronze Man*).
Weishu (BL21) treats Stomach cold with abdominal distension, anorexia, and emaciation. (*Bronze Man*).
People say: Those whose blood and Qi are undisturbed remain thin but healthy; those whose blood and Qi are exhausted die even if fat. Thus, emaciation itself may not seem harmful. However, emaciation inevitably stems from poor dietary intake. Poor intake prevents the generation of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi). Without Ying and Wei, Qi and Blood decline, leading eventually to death. Thus, *Nan Jing Shu* says humans rely on Stomach Qi for life; humans derive life from Stomach Qi. *Wu Zang Lun* says: If the Spleen does not digest food, food is not transformed; if the Spleen is not strong, food has no way to transform. Since we rely on Stomach Qi for life and Spleen for digestion, how can we allow the Spleen and Stomach to be weak for a day? To strengthen them, one should moxa Pishu and Weishu, etc.
Heart Wind Stroke presents with manic running, epilepsy, crying/singing, chest oppression/confusion, coughing/spitting blood. Needling Xinshu (BL15) is suitable. (*Bronze Man*).
*Nan Jing Shu* states the Heart is the master of Zang-Fu and generally does not get diseased; if it does, Spirit departs and Qi exhausts, causing cold extremities. This is called True Heartache; onset in morning leads to death by evening. If extremities are warm, it is called Reversed Heartache, which can be urgently treated. Thus, *Qian Jin Fang* says for Heart Wind Stroke, urgently moxa Xinshu 100 cones and administer Xuming Tang. If one sticks to the theory that Xinshu cannot be moxaed, there is no solution. However, although Xinshu can be needled, piercing the Heart directly causes death within a day; is it easy to needle? To avoid this, one should nurture the Heart in daily life, keeping it peaceful, avoiding sorrow and worry that damage the Spirit. This is the best strategy. If unavoidable, taking Zhenxin Dan (Calming Heart Pill) and other medicines is the secondary strategy.
Shenshu (BL23) treats consumptive fatigue and emaciation, Kidney deficiency with chronic cold in the Water Storage (Kidney), turbid urine, seminal emission, genital pain, Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries with deficiency/exhaustion, cold feet like ice, and edema like water. (*Bronze Man*).
*Nan Jing Shu* says there are two Kidneys flanking the spine; the left is the Kidney, the right is Mingmen (Gate of Life). Mingmen is the root of life and destiny. Its level aligns with the umbilicus. When moxaing Shenshu, stand upright, measure from the umbilicus with a stick, then measure on the spine to find the level aligned with the umbilicus. Then mark 1.5 cun lateral to the spine; this is Shenshu. Press the depression to confirm the point before moxaing. Always use the number of cones corresponding to age. Moxibustion has merit, but depends on how one nurtures oneself. One must protect Dantian; I discussed this in detail in *Ji Xiao Fang*. Regarding the harm caused by concubines and outsiders, I have not touched upon it. The Preface to *Junzi Xiela* in the *Shi Jing* says: A woman engaging in licentiousness loses the way of serving her gentleman. Thus, it describes the virtue of the ruler and the grandeur of attire, implying she should live with her gentleman until old age. Failing to do so brings great sin to the woman, hence the poet satirizes her. The intent is clear. As for scholars who are satisfied with their ambitions, pride comes uninvited. Serving dozens of concubines/outside women, speaking lewd words constantly, unable to control themselves, indulging in lust—this is common. Wives tolerate this silently. When asked, they say, "From a mother's view, I am virtuous; from my own, I am jealous." Some praise this; husbands think she is virtuous and non-jealous. Who knows that her lack of jealousy is the cause of disaster? Although the transformation of *Er Nan* aims for non-jealousy, discussing this now is not to differ from the poets. No. Ancients practiced cohabitation once every ten days. Xunzi said his non-jealousy allowed concubines to fulfill this quota. Non-jealousy is similar in name but different in practice. I highlight this as a warning for couples, not to differ from poets.
Qugu (CV2) mainly treats seminal emission and extreme deficiency of the Five Zang organs. Moxa 50 cones. (*Qian Jin*). *Mingtang Xia Jing* says: For any deficiency, exhaustion, and extreme cold, moxibustion is suitable.
Cold pain in bone marrow: Moxa Shanglian (ST34? Note: Context suggests a point for bone/marrow, possibly referring to a specific local point or typo in source, but translated literally as Shanglian) 70 cones. (*Qian Jin*).
*Nan Jing Shu* Eight Hui Points: Fu-Hui Zhongwan (CV12) treats Fu diseases; Zang-Hui Zhangmen (LR13) treats Zang diseases; Jin-Hui Yanglingquan (GB34) treats Sinew diseases; Sui-Hui Jiexi (GB39) treats Marrow diseases; Xue-Hui Geshu (BL17) treats Blood diseases; Gu-Hui Dazhu (BL11) [Contraindicated for Moxa] treats Bone diseases; Mai-Hui Taiyuan (LU9) treats Vessel diseases; Qi-Hui Tanzhong (CV17) treats Qi diseases. Therefore, for bone/marrow diseases, one should first use Dazhu and Jiexi, then Shanglian.
Bladder and Sanjiao fluid deficiency, Cold-Heat of Large and Small Intestines. (See Lower Back Pain section). Or Cold-Heat of Sanjiao: Moxa Xiaochangshu (BL27) 50 cones. Heat in Sanjiao, Bladder, and Kidney: Moxa Shuidao (ST28) according to age. (*Qian Jin*).
Gaohuangshu (BL43) mainly treats everything. Emaciation and deficiency, nocturnal emissions, rebellious Qi with cough, mania, and forgetfulness.
Gaohuangshu treats everything, yet ancients could not locate its point. Thus, Duke Jing of Jin was ill. The Qin physician said: "Huan looked and said: It is above the Gaohuang, below the Gaohuang. Attack (acupuncture) cannot reach it, penetration (medicine) cannot reach it, drugs do not arrive. It is incurable." The Duke considered him a good doctor, but Sun Simiao laughed at his clumsiness for failing to locate the point for moxibustion. If Jizi Yu's Chilogdan could treat the ghosts above and below the Gaohuang, no moxibustion would be needed. Huan was not only clumsy in not moxaing but also lacked ghost-killing medicine. Was his skill limited to this?
