Daying (ST5), Wuli (LI21), and Binao (SI9) govern chills and fever, and scrofula of the neck. (Qian) Daying treats chills and fever, neck pain, and scrofula. (Tong) Quepen (SI13) treats chills and fever, scrofula. Swelling in the middle of Quepen; if it ulcerates externally, sores arise. Heat and fullness in the chest, abdominal distension, water qi accumulation, pain in the middle of Quepen, and sweating. (Ming is the same.) Wuli treats chills and fever, scrofula, and cough; Binao treats chills and fever, stiffness of the neck and nape, scrofula, shoulder and back pain with inability to lift the arm. Shaohai (HT3) treats scrofula in the axilla, arm pain, inability to flex and extend, wind-bi, and traveling pain diseases. (Ming) Tianyou (TE16) treats scrofula, chills and fever, accumulated qi in the neck, sudden deafness, and shoulder pain. (Xia) Moxibustion for all scrofula located on the neck, as well as any palpable nodules resembling tubercles or carbuncles. Use a single-clove garlic, cut off both ends but keep the center, make moxa cones the size of the garlic clove, place them on the lesion, and moxibustate without breaking the skin, only until heat is felt. Change the garlic after seven cones. Moxibustate daily until the scrofula disappears. For all scrofula, moxibustate the hollows in the inner aspect of both groins at the affected sites, one cone per day, which is miraculous. Alternatively, moxibustate Wuli and Renying (ST9) each thirty cones. Or, on both sides of the patient's back, behind the axillae, and above the wrist bones, use the number of cones corresponding to the patient's age. Or, moxibustate seven cones on the vessel directly below the hairline behind the ear.
A colleague had scrofula on his neck. Someone taught him to grind Honeysuckle Stem (Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis) into fine powder, decoct it with wine and water, drink the liquid, and apply the dregs topically, resulting in a cure. (See Liang Fang.) It recurred the next year. The previous medicine was ineffective. Root removal was achieved only by moxibustation. A child developed scrofula behind the ear. Topical medication was ineffective. It also healed after moxibustation.
When scrofula first appears, the size of a plum or apricot, strictly avoid using toxic drugs for cauterization, nor use needles, knives, or sickles for excision, as this leads to severe debilitation. Once treated with cauterization or surgery, death invariably follows later. This is because external physicians often lack compassion and benefit from prolonged treatment periods; this practice must be strictly avoided. (Bi) Ulcers adhering to the neck and anterior chest can be treated by moxibustating between the breasts. (See Bai Bo) Scrofulous fistula in the axilla, arm pain with inability to flex and extend, wind-bi fistula, and pruritus: needle Shaohai 0.3 cun deep. Retain the needle for seven breaths, employ reducing method for five breaths. When needling scrofula nodules, first rest the needle tip on the skin for thirty-six breaths, then push the needle in. The depth should follow the size of the nodule, but do not penetrate through the nodule. Perform three lifting and thrusting motions, then withdraw the needle. Neck fistula: moxibustate Tianchi (PC1) one hundred cones. Also moxibustate seventy cones in the hollow below Xinjiuwei (CV15). Also moxibustate Zhangmen (LR13), Zulinqi (GB41), Zhigou (TE6), and Yangfu (GB38), each one hundred cones. Also moxibustate Jianjing (GB21) according to the patient's age. Additionally, surround the perimeter of the lesion with moxa cones, stopping after seven cones. For various malignant fistulas with cold flesh protruding, moxibustate three cones on each side above the medial malleolus. For cases lasting two years, moxibustate six cones. (Qian Yi)
