Using the left hand of males or the right hand of females, bend the thumb and middle finger so that their tips meet to form a ring. The distance between the two ends of the transverse crease at the middle phalanx of the middle finger is taken as one Cun (body-inch). For any longitudinal measurements of the arms (note: originally written as "legs" in some editions, which is an error) and horizontal measurements of the back and abdomen, where no other folding methods apply, this method shall be used as the basis.

*(Lei Jing Tu Yi)*
The term "Tong Shen Cun" (Body-Inch) refers to a measurement standard proportional to the patient's own body dimensions. Since individuals vary in height, build, and leanness, the horizontal and vertical distances for acupoints cannot be uniformly fixed. The current method is adopted to ensure appropriateness. As stated in *Biao You Fu* (Subtle Profound Ode): "When selecting five acupoints, one must establish a reference; when selecting three meridians, one must rectify one meridian." This implies correcting a specific meridian by referencing adjacent meridians, and correcting a specific acupoint by referencing adjacent acupoints. Just as in character composition, using one phonetic component above and one rhyme component below, sandwiching the sound in the middle, the nature of the meridians and acupoints will naturally be revealed without concealment. Therefore, the head must be measured with head proportions, the abdomen with abdominal proportions, the back with back proportions, and the hands and feet with hand and foot proportions. By synthesizing their lengths and sizes to find the mean proportion, it can truly be called the Tong Shen Cun method.
