(From *Yixue Rumeng* [Introduction to Medical Learning]) The human body's Qi and Blood circulate through sixty-six acupoints daily. Five acupoints are circulated through each two-hour period (excluding the six Yuan-Source points, which are passages for meridian Qi). Acupoints that generate or harmonize with each other are considered "Open" (Kai) and can be needled. Those that overcome each other are considered "Closed" (He) and should not be needled. Yang generates, Yin dies; Yin generates, Yang dies. For example: Jia Wood dies at Wu hour, is born at Hai hour; Yi Wood dies at Hai hour, is born at Wu hour; Bing Fire is born at Yin hour, dies at You hour; Ding Fire dies at You hour, is born at Yin hour; Wu Earth is born at Yin hour, dies at You hour; Ji Earth dies at You hour, is born at Yin hour; Geng Metal is born at Si hour, dies at Zi hour; Xin Metal dies at Zi hour, is born at Si hour; Ren Water is born at Shen hour, dies at Mao hour; Gui Water dies at Mao hour, is born at Shen hour. Whenever one encounters hours where there is mutual generation (Sheng) or harmony (He), it is a time when Qi and Blood are flourishing and vigorous; thus, deficiency and excess can be assessed and needling performed. When encountering hours of mutual overcoming (Ke) or closure (He), Qi and Blood are declining or exhausted. Either the Qi has not yet arrived, or it has already passed; one must not recklessly induce pathogenic factors to disrupt the True Qi.
On Yang days and in Yang hours, Yang acupoints are used; on Yin days and in Yin hours, Yin acupoints are used. On Yang days, Yin hours serve as "Closed"; on Yin days, Yang hours serve as "Closed." "Closed" means sealed. During closed periods, needling should target the acupoint that harmonizes with the Heavenly Stem of the current hour. If a Yang day encounters a Yin hour, or a Yin day encounters a Yang hour, the previous acupoint is already closed; instead, the harmonizing acupoint should be needled. Harmonization refers to: Jia combines with Ji to transform into Earth; Yi combines with Geng to transform into Metal; Bing combines with Xin to transform into Water; Ding combines with Ren to transform into Wood; Wu combines with Gui to transform into Fire. This is what is referred to as the "Five Gates and Ten Changes."
The reason for this is that on Yang days, Qi flows into the Fu organs first, followed by Blood; on Yin days, Blood flows into the Zang organs first, followed by Qi. This follows the principles of Yin and Yang.
Some ask: What if the Yang hours of a Yang day or the Yin hours of a Yin day have already passed, and an acute condition arises? The answer is: Spouses and Parent-Child pairs may be used interchangeably, provided they are suitable for the specific disease. If the Wife point is closed, needle the Husband point; if the Husband point is closed, needle the Wife point. If the Child point is closed, needle the Mother point; if the Mother point is closed, needle the Child point. The acupoint must be appropriate for the condition before needling. When selecting acupoints, prioritize the Principal (Zhu) over the Guest (Ke); when selecting hours, abandon the Principal hour and follow the Guest hour.
For instance, on a Jia day, the Gallbladder Meridian serves as the Principal, while other acupoints are Guests. Needling must proceed from Principal to Guest. If the Principal acupoint is not open during hours such as Jia or Xu, then needle the Guest acupoint. Calculate the hours based on the day, and trace the meridians to find the acupoints. Each hour corresponds to specific acupoints, and each acupoint corresponds to specific hours; these correspondences are clear and definite. There is no need to calculate complex numerical derivations. This is why one should adhere strictly to the Zi Wu Liu Zhu method rather than discard it for the Ling Gui Ba Fa method.
(Note: Xu’s Ling Gui Fei Teng acupuncture methods are considered baseless theories and are therefore not recorded here. The only method worthy of reverence is the Eight Confluent Points of the Extraordinary Vessels.)
