Taiyi refers to the Eight Extremities stars. Thus, Taiyi resides in the Central Palace, while the Big Dipper revolves outside it, allowing it to face the winds of the eight directions to divine auspiciousness and inauspiciousness. This is what is meant by the North Star/Polaris being the pivot of heaven.
[Chart of Taiyi's Location and Heavenly Taboos]
The *Ling Shu: Nine Palaces and Eight Winds* chapter divides the eight solar terms into eight palaces, calling them the residences of Taiyi, which perfectly aligns with the sequence of lunar mansions. The direction where the moon resides is the position dominated by the current seasonal energy. The Qi of the human body responds to this accordingly. Therefore, practitioners of acupuncture and moxibustion must know these taboos to avoid, lest they damage the prosperous Qi of the season.
At Li Chun (Start of Spring), Taiyi rises in Gen Palace (Northeast), named Tianliu; seek treatment in the left foot on Ji Chou and Wu Yin days. At Chun Fen (Spring Equinox), Taiyi is in Zhen Palace (East), named Cangmen, fixed in the left hypochondrium; needle on Yi Mao days in the East. At Li Xia (Start of Summer), Taiyi is on Wu Chen and Ji Si days; in Xun Palace (Southeast), named Yinluo, causing sorrow in the left hand (indicating caution with the left hand). At Xia Zhi (Summer Solstice), Taiyi is on Bing Wu days; in Li Palace (South), affecting the chest to throat, head, and face. At Li Qiu (Start of Autumn), Taiyi is in Aiwei (Kun Palace, Southwest), named Youqi/Wanwu depending on version, but text says Aiwei; treat the right hand; on Ji Wei and Wu Shen days, travel in Kun. At Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox), Taiyi is in Dui Palace (West), named Cangguo; plan from the right hypochondrium on Xin You days. At Li Dong (Start of Winter), add Xinluo to the right foot; on Wu Xu and Ji Hai days, collect in Qian Palace (Northwest). At Dong Zhi (Winter Solstice), Taiyi approaches Ye Zhe in Kan Palace (North); on Ren Zi days, flow flows through the waist, sacrum, and lower orifices. The Five Zang and Six Fu organs, along with the umbilicus and abdomen, correspond to the Zhao Yao star (Central Palace) and Earthly Stems Wu and Ji, residing in the Central State.
