Deafness, also known as "Chongting" (hearing impairment), can arise from external pathogens blocking the transmission of sound, where the pathology lies in the meridians; or from internal organ dysfunction preventing the reception of sound, where the pathology lies in the Zang organs.
New-onset deafness is often due to heat; select points from the Shaoyang and Yangming meridians. Chronic deafness is often due to deficiency; tonify the Shaoyin meridian.
Acupoints: Yemen (SJ2), Zhongzhu (SJ3), Waiguan (SJ5), Yifeng (TE17), Ermen (TE21), Houxi (SI3), Tinggong (SI19), Tinghui (GB2), Hegu (LI4), Xiaxi (GB43).
Tinnitus is caused by phlegm-fire rising and obstructing the auditory orifice. It may also result from severe anger, where fire of the Shaoyang meridian invades the ear. If the tinnitus is mild and the pulse is thin, it indicates deficiency.
Acupoints: Ermen (TE21), Tinghui (GB2), Tinggong (SI19), Qian Gu (SI06), Wanggu (SI5), Yanggu (SI05), Luoxue (Luo-connecting point), Shenshu (BL23).
Sores in the ear resembling red flesh. Additionally, foul-smelling discharge from the ear is referred to as "Er Gan" (ear carbuncle/ulcer).
Acupoints: Tinggong (SI19), Yifeng (TE17), Ermen (TE21), Hegu (LI4), Xiaguan (ST7).

Nasal congestion with loss of smell and taste. The nose governs respiration, with breath flowing continuously. If wind-cold closes the couli (pores/skin interstices), nasal congestion and difficulty breathing occur. If fire stagnates in the clear orifices, the ability to distinguish odors is lost. Polyps may grow and block the airway, termed "Bi Zhi" (nasal polyp). This is caused by the retention and coagulation of heat in the Yangming meridian.
Acupoints: Baihui (GV20), Fengfu (GV16), Bailao (EX-HN2), Shangxing (GV23), Shuigou (GV26), Yingxiang (LI20), Tongtian (BL3).
Nasal Polyps
Acupoints: Tongtian (BL3), Xinhui (GV22) (Moxibustion, 7 moxa cones on each point is effective).
Bi Yuan (Sinusitis), also known as "Nao Lou" (brain leakage). In cases of severe stagnant heat, turbid and foul-smelling nasal discharge occurs intermittently, termed Bi Yuan. In cases of mild heat, clear nasal discharge occurs, termed Qiu (rhinorrhea).
Acupoints: Shangxing (GV23), Fengfu (GV16), Qucha (BL5), Renzhong (GV26), Hegu (LI4).
Bi Nu (Epistaxis/Nosebleed)
Acupoints: Shangxing (GV23), Fengfu (GV16) (Blood enters the brain via this point and flows to the nose; moxibustion for 3 cones stops bleeding immediately), Erjian (LI2), Hegu (LI4), Yinbai (SP1).
Alternatively, use one head of garlic mashed into a paste, formed into a cake the size of a coin, applied thickly to the sole of the foot. For left-sided epistaxis, apply to the right foot; for right-sided epistaxis, apply to the left foot. If both nostrils bleed, apply to both soles to stop the bleeding.

Swollen tongue making speech difficult, caused by emotional depression and heat accumulation in the Heart meridian, leading to tongue swelling and respiratory distress.
Acupoints: Jinjin, Yuye (Extra points on the underside of the tongue), Lianquan (CV23), Shaoshang (LU11), Xingjian (LR2).
The *Qianjin Fang* states: When the tongue swells to fill the mouth and protrudes like an inflated pig bladder, causing respiratory obstruction, immediate treatment is required to prevent death. Prick the large vessels on both sides of the tongue to bleed (do not prick the center).
The *Yuan Bing Shi* states: Heat binding in the center of the tongue causes swelling, named "Mu She Zhang" (Wooden Tongue Swelling). "Mu" refers to stiffness and lack of flexibility. I once treated a woman with Wooden Tongue Swelling; her tongue filled her mouth. I pricked it five to seven times with a sharp, small needle, and it subsided after three days. The blood extracted nearly filled a dou (a unit of volume). Another method is to sprinkle powder of Puhuang (Cattail Pollen) on it.
Pediatric Chong She (Double Tongue)
Acupoint: Xingjian (LR2).
Stiff Tongue, often seen in stroke patients due to phlegm stagnation.
Acupoints: Yamen (GV15), Sanjian (LI3), Zhongchong (PC9), Xingjian (LR2).
Flaccid Tongue
Treatment is the same as above.
Yellow Coating on the Tongue
Acupoint: Yuji (LU10).
