Edema: Yang-type edema begins with swelling in the upper body, specifically the shoulders, back, arms, and the three Yang meridians of the hand. Yin-type edema begins with swelling in the lower body, specifically the waist, abdomen, calves, and the three Yin meridians of the foot. Swelling is attributed to the Spleen. Distension... If there is distension without swelling, it is called Gu-distension (parasitic abdominal distension), caused by Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth, which is difficult to treat. Edema and distension that improve in the morning and worsen in the evening indicate Blood deficiency; those that improve in the evening and worsen in the morning indicate Qi and Blood dual deficiency. If the swelling spreads from the heart/abdomen to the limbs, it is auspicious; if it spreads from the limbs to the heart/abdomen, it is critical. In men, if the disease progresses from below upwards, and in women, from above downwards, both are difficult to treat.

Water Xi accompanied by thirst and desire to drink indicates Heat in the Upper Jiao (Diaphragm). Excessive water enters the body, passes through the diaphragm into the Stomach. Since the Stomach originally lacks Heat, it cannot withstand the excess water. This condition is called "Water Indulgence" (Shuizi). Consequently, rice and grain pass through quickly. This condition should be treated with moxibustion on Dazhui (GV14), 2-5 moxa cones, which will bring immediate relief. If using herbs, it is advisable to use Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) ground into pills, combined with Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Poria (Fuling), etc., or Wuling San, which can be selected for use. Furthermore, various diarrheas and dysenteries entering the Stomach are called Yi Yin (Overflowing Drink). The patient is thirsty and drinks, but after drinking, they diarrhea again and become thirsty again. This is a case where no medicine can cure it; one should perform moxibustion on Dazhui (GV14).
