[Contraindications and Indications for Acupuncture in Dampness Diseases] When using acupuncture to treat dampness diseases, moxibustion is contraindicated; however, only for damp-bi (joint pain caused by the obstruction of collaterals by dampness) and Hong Kong foot (swelling and pain in the feet) or Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome characterized by weakness of the limbs) caused by damp-heat, acupuncture should be applied to unblock the Qi of the collaterals, which is considered optimal. (Su Fang)
[Acupuncture Methods for Bone-steaming Consumption Fever] To treat bone-steaming consumption fever (a deficiency heat symptom where one feels heat emanating from the bones, occurring like a tide at regular intervals), select Gao Huang (BL43) and Zusanli (ST36). (Gang Mu) ○ For patients with bone-steaming consumption fever whose physical form and Qi have not yet collapsed, moxibustion on Cui Shi Si Hua Xue (Cui's Four Flower Points) ensures recovery without instability. (Zheng Chuan) ○ For those with body heat and emaciation due to consumption, select Po Hu (BL42). (Gang Mu) ○ Severe heat in both hands, feeling as if the bones are burning in fire, is called "Gu Jue" (Bone Jue); moxibustion on Yongquan (KI1) for three or five moxa cones brings immediate relief. (Hai Zang) ○ For bone-steaming heat causing dry and stiff teeth, select Da Zhui (GV14) for moxibustion. (Gang Mu) ○ For body heat like fire but cold feet like ice, moxibustion on Yang Fu (GB38). (Yi Lao)
[Acupuncture Methods for Stomach Weakness and Dietary Abnormalities] For stomach weakness and lack of appetite, select Zusanli (ST38) and Sanyinjiao (SP6). ○ For loss of appetite due to pathogenic heat in the San Jiao (Triple Burner), select Guan Yuan (CV4). (Gang Mu) ○ For complete anorexia, select Ran Gu (KI2) and induce bleeding to immediately stimulate hunger. ○ For hunger but inability to eat or swallow food, select Zhang Men (LR13) and Qi Men (LR14). (Dong Yuan) ○ For poor intake accompanied by abdominal distension and sallow complexion, known as Spleen-Kidney disease, moxibustion on Zhong Wan (CV12) is suitable. (Zi Sheng) ○ For excessive eating leading to emaciation, termed "Shi Hui" (Consuming Hunger), first select Pi Shu (BL20), then Zhang Men (LR13) and Tai Cang (CV12, i.e., Zhong Wan). (Zi Shheng) ○ For inability to swallow food due to blockage in the diaphragm and stagnation in the stomach region: if the pathology is at Shang Wan (CV13), use suppression and downward guidance methods; if at Xia Wan (CV10), use dispersal and elimination methods. (Ling Shu) ○ For stomach disease causing inability to eat, select Zusanli (ST36). (Dong Yuan) ○ For vomiting old fluids and acid regurgitation, select Zhang Men (LR13) and Shen Guang (EX-HN). (Dong Yuan)
[Acupuncture Methods for Five Labors, Emaciation, and Deficiency Consumption] For emaciation due to the Five Labors (injuries from prolonged viewing, lying, sitting, standing, and walking), select Zusanli (ST36). ○ For body heat and consumption cough, reduce Po Hu (BL42). ○ For deficiency consumption with bone-steaming and night sweats, reduce Yin Xi (HT6). (Gang Mu) ○ For insufficiency of True Qi, moxibustion on Qi Hai (CV6). (Zi Sheng) ○ Various conditions of deficiency consumption are suitable for moxibustion on Gao Huang Shu (BL43), Huan Men (EX-B1), and Cui Shi Si Hua Xue (Cui's Four Flower Points); these points treat all ailments. (See detailed acupuncture methods in the Acupuncture Section) ○ These moxibustion methods are suitable for Yang deficiency. Hua Tuo stated: For wind-deficiency and cold-heat disorders, deficiency syndromes generally should not be treated with moxibustion; however, medical texts state that for deficiency damage and consumption tuberculosis, early moxibustion on the four Gao Huang points is indicated, suggesting treatment before severe deficiency forms. If emaciated with accompanying fire pathogens, even if moxibustion is used, it is suitable to moxibustion Neiguan (PC6) and Zusanli (ST36) to dissipate phlegm-fire. In early stages attempting to manifest Yin fire, moxibustion is contraindicated. (Ru Men) ○ Great illness with collapse is fundamentally Yin deficiency; using moxibustion on Dan Tian (CV4/CV6 area) is to tonify Yang, because when Yang generates, Yin grows. (Dan Xin)
