Q: What is the condition where a person suffers from eye nebulae, resembling beads hanging down like a curtain covering the eyes? A: This is caused by deficiency-fire of the Heart flaring up and wind-heat in the Liver meridian attacking upwards into the brain. The heat-toxin flows downward and pours into the Fenglun (the black part of the eye, corresponding to the Liver), resulting in redness, dryness, tearing, and constant swelling and pain. After many years, the black pupil appears white-red, hence the name Chuilian Yi (Curtain-like Nebula). It is appropriate to administer Xixin San (Heart-Cleansing Powder) and Jiawei Xiugan San (Modified Liver-Nourishing Powder).

Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
Take five qian of the above herbs per dose, decoct in water, and take orally.
Jiawei Xiugan San (Modified Liver-Nourishing Powder)
Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (each 3 liang), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (1 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (each 5 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Muzei (Equiseti Herba), Baijili (Tribuli Fructus), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Grind the above herbs into powder. Take three qian per dose, mixed with wine. If painful, take with wine; if not painful, decoct in water and take orally.
Huyan Ningjing (Hawk-Eye Staring Condition) is caused by sudden pathogenic invasion, not a chronic condition. It results from heat-toxin affecting all five Zang organs, causing the Wulun (Five Wheels of the eye) to swell and protrude, becoming hard and immobile due to stagnation of Qi and blood. The eyes open like those of a hawk, staring fixedly without movement, making it difficult to distinguish people. Named for its appearance as Huyan Ningjing. Treatment: Apply ginger juice mixed with sesame oil to rub the forehead and eyelids, or preferably use Mofeng Gao (Wind-Rubbing Ointment). Administer Jiu Jian San (Wine-Decoction Powder), cover with a blanket to induce sweating, and the eye movement will recover. Burn the Dianmian (Dianmian acupoint) with moxa or fire-lighter to cut off the wind pathway. This condition is mostly seen in children with acute or chronic convulsive disorders; adults rarely suffer from it.
