If the itching in the eyes is extremely unbearable, it is due to Heat pathogen invading the Liver Meridian (Liver Channel), and Gallbladder deficiency-Heat. Wind Pathogen attacks and fills the area. The Liver contains extreme Heat; when the Liver is affected by the drying and moving nature of Wind, similar to trees shaking with the wind, itching arises. Therefore, all itching belongs to Deficiency (Xu); Deficiency causes itching. All pain belongs to Excess (Shi); Excess causes pain. Some have itching of the black pearl (cornea), some have itching of the eyelid margins. These can be treated with point application of Dan Yao (mineral/alchemical pills), or friction with roasted ginger. When tears flow, the itching stops. For wet-type itching, Bi Tian Dan (Blue Sky Pill) can be used for washing. In the early morning, wash with salt water, or add herbs such as Sang Bai Pi (Morus Alba Root Bark), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Spike), and Bo He (Mint). Question: Why do the eyes itch when exposed to wind? Answer: It is because the Liver Meridian and Lung Meridian are invaded by Wind Pathogen. Treatment method: When itching occurs, use San Shuang Wan (Three Frost Pills), Bo Yun San (Cloud-Piercing Powder), Mian Guo San (Cotton-Wrapped Powder). For washing, use Wind-dispelling herbs.
San Shuang Wan (Three Frost Pills): Treats extremely unbearable itching. Using this pill leads to recovery.
Ginger Powder, Ku Fan (Alum), Bai Peng Sha (White Borax).
Grind the above into powder, mix with saliva to form pills the size of millet grains. When needed, place one pill in the eye to stop itching.
Mian Guo San (Cotton-Wrapped Powder): Treats eye conditions with dampness, tearing, and ulcerated eyelid margins.
Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) (each 1 qian), Tong Qing (Malachite), Ku Fan (Alum) (4 fen), Po Xiao (Mirabilite).
Grind each into fine powder separately. Wrap tightly in fine silk cotton, forming a packet about the size of a longan seed. When needed, soak one packet in half a cup of hot water for washing. Use twice a day.
Question: Why do people suffering from eye diseases experience extreme itching when exposed to wind? Answer: This is due to Liver Deficiency combined with accumulated Wind-Heat. Wind-Toxin from the Gallbladder Meridian rushes upward into the eyes, causing itching upon exposure to wind. Suitable to wash with [missing herb name], and take Ben Wu She Tang (Ben Snake Snake Decoction) and Bu Dan Tang (Gallbladder-Supplementing Decoction).
