Question: What is the reason for people suffering from eye diseases where both eyelids are frequently red and ulcerated? Answer: In adults, this condition arises because damp-heat accumulates in the Spleen Earth. The Spleen Earth is deficient and unable to transform dampness, causing damp-heat qi to contend with each other and transmit to the region of the eyelids (Bao Jian). This results in photophobia and tearing, with hot toxins accumulating within the eyelids, leading to redness and ulceration of the eye margins (Yan Xian). Treatment methods: Ulceration in spring and summer is due to heat; administer Sanhuang Tang internally, and wash externally with Mianli San and Jinqian Tang. If there is blood stasis, wash with calcined Calamina prepared with old vinegar, and administer Xiepi Tang internally. Ulceration in autumn and winter is due to cold, also known as "wind-facing tearing"; wash externally with Bitian Dan, apply heavy medicated drops, wash if the eyelids are swollen, and subsequently apply cauterization therapy. In children, this disease occurs due to heat received in the womb, or when lochia enters the eyes at birth, incomplete bathing, wiping while still wet, and subsequent contraction of external wind pathogens, allowing evil qi to enter the eyes and cause this disease. Treat children with Huanglian Tang, and adults with Chatiao San. For severe heat, wash with Jinqian Tang; for severe wind, wash with Bitian Dan. Wash first, then take medicine.
Huanglian Tang
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each one liang).
Take equal parts of the above, decoct in water and take orally.
Chatiao San Is Chuanchuanxiong Chatiao San. The formula is in the previous section on "Symptoms of Wind-Induced Tearing."
Sanhuang Tang Is in the section on "Pterygium" (Zhi Rou Pan Jing Zheng).
Mianli San Is in the section on "Intolerable Itching" (Yang Ji Nan Ren Zheng).
Bitian Dan
Jinqian Tang Treats chronic marginal blepharitis.
Guqian (Old copper coins with rust, use seven pieces), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (powdered, two qian), Baimei Gan (Five dried white plums, those that fall naturally are called white plums).
Take these three ingredients, add two small cups of aged wine, decoct in a porcelain jar until half a cup remains. Cool at night and use for washing. It will heal in no more than three or four times, twice daily.
Fire Acupoint Method for Marginal Blepharitis
Yuwu (2 points), Jingming (2 points), Shangyingxiang (2 points), Cuanzhu (1 point), Taiyang (2 points).
The symptoms of Fenglan (Wind Ulceration) of the eye margin are caused by heat stagnation in the Spleen and Stomach, long-term exposure to wind-dampness, and consumption of various toxic foods. Accumulating day after day, it leads to wind-induced ulceration. Within the eyelids, wind pustules form, itching upon movement, and frequent rubbing causes severe ulceration extending to the orbital bones, regardless of the season. Discharge and tears fill the cheeks, causing fear of being touched. Treatment method: Evert the eyelid, wash away blood stasis two or three times, or puncture with a small sharp needle to release blood stasis. If red veins appear due to friction/traction, use Calamina calcined seven times in old vinegar, mixed with Yindan, applied to the eye margin according to severity, or insufflated into the eye without harm. Avoid foods that stir wind or move blood; abstaining from them is sufficient.
