Yellow membrane drooping is caused by heat in the Spleen and Stomach, wind pathogen accumulation, blood stasis, and Qi stagnation. This leads to obstruction of the "gao zhi" (lipid secretions within the eye), preventing smooth blood circulation, thus resulting in this disease. The onset and remission occur without fixed timing. Symptoms include pain, astringency, and tearing. Gradually, a yellow membrane forms and droops; when active, the membrane spreads out, and when receding, it curls up. The eyelid skin droops, causing photophobia and fear of sunlight. Although one tries to open the eyes, they cannot be fully opened. The yellow membrane grows gradually, obscuring the pupil, and may even turn the entire eye yellow, making it difficult to distinguish people or objects. Treatment method: Although this is not the condition of inverted cilia (quan mao dao jie), the eyelids can be mechanically adjusted (jia) to expose the cornea (hei jing). Mechanical adjustment is suitable only when the pathogenic qi of the yellow membrane has subsided and the intervals between attacks have been long; it should not be performed during acute onset. The treatment should employ the Tong Pi Xie Wei Bo Yun Ba Zheng formula to clear the Spleen and purge Stomach heat, with a small amount of Bing Pian (Borneolum Syntheticum) added. If tears are present, the condition resolves quickly; if absent, it resolves slowly. Dietary restrictions and fasting are required to reduce blood excess and facilitate regulation. Another variant involves the yellow membrane growing from below upwards, termed "yellow membrane filling upwards." The general treatment is similar, but for thick membranes, incision and trimming are appropriate.
Question: What causes the white sclera to appear yellowish-red with an opacity resembling a red membrane? Answer: This is a sign of the Liver Wood overacting on the Spleen Earth (Wood overcoming Earth). Treatment should utilize Sheng Wei Jin Hua Wan to remove the yellow membrane, followed by Zhen Sha Ping Wei Wan to consolidate the cure. For eye drops, potent medications should be used, but Borneolum Syntheticum (Bing Pian) should be used sparingly.
Zhen Sha Ping Wei Wan: Long-term use stabilizes Stomach Qi and eliminates Liver pathogenic factors.
Ingredients: Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zhen Sha (Cinnabar).
All ingredients in equal parts are chopped into powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. Take 50 pills per dose, swallowed with rice water on an empty stomach.
Sheng Wei Jin Hua Wan: Treats accumulated heat in the Spleen and Stomach that causes yellow membrane formation.
Ingredients: Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Bai (Phellodendri Cortex), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills. Swallow with clear tea.
When a red membrane generates below the eyelid, droops, covers the cornea, and causes pain, it is due to Stomach heat. Treatment method: For severe redness and pain, administer Yu Jin Jiu Tiao San or Da Huang Dang Gui San. After slight remission, use Bo Yun Tang or Sheng Di Huang San. For eye drops, add cooling dispersing agents. All aforementioned formulas are cited earlier in the text.
Da Huang Dang Gui San: Treats heat in the Stomach causing membrane formation and pain.
Ingredients: Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba/Rubra), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba).
All ingredients in equal parts are chopped. Decoct in water and take warm after meals.
Sheng Di Huang San: Treats red membrane under the eyes, which appears and disappears irregularly. Long-term use prevents recurrence.
Ingredients: Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Huang Bai (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra).
Chop all ingredients. Each dose weighs approximately 7-8 qian. Decoct in water and take after meals.
