(From *Shanghan Lun* [Treatise on Cold Damage])
To treat Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with sudden vomiting and diarrhea) caused by Middle Jiao deficiency combined with Summerheat-Heat, and after the Huoluan symptoms have stabilized.
Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf, two handfuls) Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum, one jin) Ban Xia (Pinellia Rhizoma, half sheng, washed) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, three liang) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, one sheng) Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa Germen, half sheng) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, two liang)
Use ten dou of water. First decoct the first six herbs, reduce to six sheng of liquid, filter out the dregs, add Jing Mi (Rice), and cook until the rice is tender and the soup is ready. Filter out the rice. Take one sheng warm, three times a day. Note: According to *Ji Yan Fang*, adding Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) to this formula is most effective for treating vomiting. I believe that for treating Huoluan, decocting it in Di Jiang Shui (Earth Slurry Water) is even more excellent.
(From Liu Hejian)
To treat Huoluan complicated by Summerheat-Heat and Dampness.
Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig, peeled) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Zhu Ling (Polyporus, each five qian) Fu Ling (Poria, peeled) Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizoma, each one liang) Hua Shi (Talcum, four liang) Han Shui Shi (Calcitum) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each two liang; another version uses one liang and five qian)
Grind the nine ingredients into fine powder. Take three qian per dose, mixed with warm water, fresh well water, or Sheng Jiang Tang (Fresh Ginger Decoction), adjusted according to the condition. Children take one qian per dose. Note: This formula is also known as Gui Ling Bai Zhu San. Another version excludes Zhu Ling, or removes Zhu Ling and adds Ren Shen, also named Gui Ling Bai Zhu San.
(i.e., Yi Yuan San, also known as Tian Shui San)
Hua Shi (Talcum, from Guifu, fine and white, six liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, one liang)
Grind the two ingredients into fine powder. Take three qian per dose, mixed with warm water or fresh well water, three times a day. For those with exterior pathogenic factors, mix with a decoction of Cong Bai (Scallion White, five cun) and Dou Chi (Prepared Soybean, fifty grains). Adding Huang Dan (Lithargyrum) to this base formula creates Hong Yu San. Adding Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis) creates Bi Yu San. Adding Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) creates Ji Su San. Adding Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris) creates Chen Sha Yi Yuan San.
(From *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
To treat Huoluan accompanied by macules/rash (Fa Ban).
Cong Bai (Scallion White, one handful) Xiang Chi (Prepared Soybean, three he)
Decoct in water, add Tong Zi Xiao Nian (Urine of a healthy young boy, one he), take three times a day.
Note: Shi Wan (Miao Xi Yong) stated: Although the medicinal ingredients of this formula are light, its efficacy is remarkable. It is effective for deficient individuals suffering from Wind-Heat, latent Qi transforming into Warmth, and postpartum colds. I consider it an excellent prescription for exterior pathogens during pregnancy. Lu Gen (Reed Rhizome), Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf), Su Ye (Perilla Leaf), and Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) can be added according to the syndrome.
