[Stellariae Radix et Herba (Ziwan)]
Bitter and acrid in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Lung meridians. Primarily treats cough with rebellious Qi, phlegm-wheezing, hematemesis, and epistaxis; tonifies deficiency and exhaustion, and calms the Five Zang organs. Wash clean with water, then honey-fry for use. *Dongkuihua* (Coltsfoot Flower) serves as the guiding herb (Shi). Adverse interactions occur with *Tianxiong* (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), *Qumai* (Dianthi Herba), *Leiwan* (Polyporus), and *Yuanzhi* (Polygalae Radix). It is incompatible with *Yinchenhao* (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba). The best quality is purple, moist, soft, and pliable.
Commentary: The bitterness of Ziwan enters the Heart to drain flaming fire rising upward; its acridity enters the Lung to disperse stagnant Qi. It promotes Qi circulation and nourishes Blood, specifically treating blood-phlegm, making it a key herb for treating blood-consumption lao disease.
Leigong states: When preparing Ziwan, first remove the rootlets that are white and silk-like, known as "Yangxu Cao" (Sheep Beard Grass), which has different properties. After harvesting, remove the head, wash thoroughly with running water from the east, soak in honey overnight, and next morning, dry-roast over fire. For every liang of preparation, use 2 fen of honey.
[Stemonae Radix (Baibu)]
Sweet and bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature, slightly toxic. Enters the Lung meridian. Primarily treats lung-heat cough with rebellious Qi, and bone-steaming associated with transmissive tuberculosis (Chuanshi Guzheng). Kills parasites such as gan worms, warts, tapeworms (Cunbai), and lice. Split open with a bamboo knife, remove the heart, and soak in wine for use.
Commentary: Baibu specializes in treating cough and is suitable for entering the Lung meridian. Due to its slight toxicity, it can kill parasites.
Leigong states: After harvesting, split open with a bamboo knife, remove the heart and skin, divide the flowers into dozens of portions, and hang them under the eaves to be dried by wind. Once dry, soak in wine overnight, strain, and dry-roast. Finely chop. If one uses a scallion with eighty-three internal lines, dry-roasts it, and calls it "Dixian Miao" (Earth Immortal Sprout), consuming it may prolong longevity.
[Lilii Bulbus (Baihe)]
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart, Lung, Large Intestine, and Small Intestine meridians. Primarily treats spirit disturbance and evil Qi (psychosomatic symptoms), heat-cough with hematemesis, moistens the Lung, calms the Heart, settles fright, and benefits willpower. Treats back carbuncles, dissipates swelling and abscesses, removes distension and fullness, and promotes urination and defecation.
Commentary: Baihe is moistening in nature, thus entering the Heart, Lung, and various Fu meridians. Although it has tonifying effects, it may damage Lung Qi if taken excessively, so it should not be used in large doses.
[Tussilaginis Flos (Kuandonghua)]
Bitter and acrid in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Lung meridians. Primarily treats wind-stroke causing throat obstruction (Houbi), lung atrophy (Feiwei), and lung abscess (Feiyong); moistens the Heart and Lung, stops cough, eliminates phlegm-wheezing, settles fright, clears the Liver, and improves vision. *Xingren* (Apricot Seed) serves as the guiding herb (Shi); it works well in combination with *Ziwan*. Adverse interactions occur with *Zaojiao* (Gleditsiae Fructus Spina), *Xiaoshi* (Natrii Sulfas), and *Xuanshen* (Scrophulariae Radix). It is incompatible with *Beimu* (Fritillariae Bulbus), *Xinyi* (Magnoliae Flos), *Mahuang* (Ephedrae Herba), *Huangqi* (Astragali Radix), *Huangqin* (Scutellariae Radix), *Huanglian* (Coptidis Rhizoma), and *Qingxiangzi* (Celosiae Semen).
Commentary: Kuandonghua is acrid and sweet, dispersing and yang-natured, thus entering the Heart and Lung meridians to regulate conditions like phlegm-cough. It has many incompatibilities and adverse interactions; users must exercise caution.
Leigong states: Upon harvesting, remove the outer bracts, the inner hard shell-like structures resembling millet husks, as well as stems and leaves. Soak in licorice water overnight, then crush before... [Text incomplete]
