Whenever malaria is accompanied by thirst, one must absolutely not drink cold water, cold tea, or any raw and cold foods. Violating this will worsen the condition; only drinking ginger decoction while hot is a good method.
When the fever of malaria has not completely subsided, one should not eat. One must wait until the fever has entirely receded before eating; otherwise, it will inevitably lead to *pi ji* (abdominal masses).
After taking medicines to arrest malaria attacks, one must wait until after the attack has passed before eating food. If eaten too early, the malaria will recur, and subsequent attempts to arrest the malaria will be ineffective.
For mild cases of malaria, there is often foul air. One must burn sandalwood, Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), etc., to ward off evil pathogens, and frequently fumigate clothing. Once the foul air is removed, the pathogens are easily eliminated.
Ni Hanchu said: The harm of malaria affects people in the south, and even more so those in the north. It affects the weak, but even more severely the strong. Although it does not immediately endanger life, if untreated, the attacks will ceaselessly recur. Without proper treatment, evil pathogens lie dormant internally, and healthy Qi declines day by day. Over time, it becomes untreatable with medicine. The three formulas I have established are very simple and unpretentious. They do not use drastic purgatives like Dichroae Radix (Changshan) or Arecae Seed (Caoguo). Furthermore, there is no need to distinguish between Yin malaria, Yang malaria, daily malaria, every-other-day malaria, every-third-day malaria, or irregular malaria. Regardless of age or duration of illness, these three formulas require no modifications; simply take them in sequence, and recovery will follow promptly.
First Formula: Tangerine Peel (Guang Chenpi), aged Pinellia Tuber (Chen Banxia - boiled thoroughly in Ginger Juice), Poria (Bai Fuling), and Spirit Flower Rootstock (Weilingxian) each 1 qian; Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu - soaked in rice washing water for one day, sliced and stir-fried), true Zhi Houpo (stir-fried with Ginger Juice), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) each 8 fen; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi) and Arecae Semen (Binglang) each 6 fen; Prepared Licorice Root (Zhi Cao) 3 fen; Fresh Ginger 3 slices. Decoct with well water and river water (1 zhong each) until reduced to 9/10. Take when hungry. Decoct the dregs again and take. If headache occurs, add Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) 1 qian. This formula soothes the Stomach, eliminates phlegm, regulates Qi, and removes dampness, having the function of guiding and opening the way first. For mild cases, two doses are sufficient for cure; do not take further medicine. If after three doses the heat is reduced but not fully cured, use the Second Formula, taking at least three doses and at most five.
Second Formula: Raw Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Sheng Shouwu) 3 qian; Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Poria (Bai Fuling), and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) each 8 fen; Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), and Spirit Flower Rootstock (Weilingxian) each 1 qian; Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) 1 qian; Prepared Licorice Root (Zhi Cao) 3 fen; Fresh Ginger 3 slices. Decoct in water and take.
Third Formula: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) 1 qian; Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) 1 qian; Prepared Astragali Radix (Zhi Huangqi) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) each 1.2 qian; Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) and Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) each 8 fen; Prepared Licorice Root (Zhi Cao) 3 fen; Fresh Ginger 3 slices. Decoct in water and take.
Another Formula: Artemisiae Annuae Herba (Qinghao) 4 liang; true Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Chuan Beimu) 7 qian; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi), Arecae Semen (Binglang), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Nhoupu), Saccharomyces (Shenqu), and Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) each 2 liang; Licorice Root (Gancao) 2 qian. Grind all into powder, make pills the size of mung beans using Ginger Juice, and coat with Cinnabar (Zhusha). Take 3 qian three hours before the onset of malaria, delivered with Ginger Juice. Do not let women touch the pills. This formula has been tested repeatedly with success, offering miraculous effects; do not neglect it.
Another Formula: True Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Chuan Beimu) 6 liang (remove heart), Raw Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) 4 liang. Grind each into fine powder. Mix at noon on the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu). Stir-fry in a copper pot over low fire until tender yellow. [Make into pills].
Another Formula: Ox Hide Glue (Niujiao) 2 liang, melt it. Add Fresh Ginger 3 liang, pound into a paste, mix evenly, and boil into an ointment for later use. One hour before the disease starts, wash the spine with Soap Fruit Water (Zaojiao Shui) and dry it. Rub vigorously with a large piece of Fresh Ginger until extremely hot. Spread the ointment on a wide, long piece of thin cloth and apply it starting from the collar area. After one or two days, the disease will be completely cured. Remove the plaster five days after recovery. Someone who suffered from this for three years was cured with one application; it is simple and extremely effective.
Another Formula: Use a blade of grass to measure from the tip of the middle finger of the left hand to the base of the middle finger, then break the grass. Use this grass segment to measure from the base to the palm, and then from the palm to the wrist. Mark the spot with ink. Pound a single-clove garlic into a paste and apply it to the ink mark. Cover with a walnut shell and tie tightly with cloth for one shichen (two hours), then remove. Miraculous effect.
Another Formula: Realgar (Xinshi) 5 fen, Croton Seed (Badou) 7 grains, Realgar (Xionghuang) 7 fen. Grind into powder. On the Dragon Boat Festival at noon, make pills the size of hemp seeds. For Yin Malaria, apply to the center of the forehead. For others, males apply to the left side, females to the right side.
Another Formula: 21 Croton Seeds (Badou), one Arisaema Rhizome (Nanxing), a little wheat flour. Mix with water to form a cake. Apply to the forehead using a plaster.
Another Formula: Wine-processed Lysimachiae Herba (Jiu Di Jin Qian Cao - also known as Bian Di Jin Qian, Po Tong Qian, Man Tian Xing). In the early morning, insert one pill into each nostril.
Another Formula: Seven peach buds facing heaven, seven single-clove garlics, 49 peppercorns, tips of zongzi from five families. Pound together at noon on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. [Take externally or internally].
Another Formula: Dichroae Radix (Changshan), Arecae Seed (Caoguo), and Eugeniae Caryophyllati Flos (Dingxiang) in small amounts. Decoct in half a teacup of good wine through several boils. Pour into a vessel, and inhale the hot fumes through the nose. Cure follows.
Another Formula: Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) 1 qian, true dried plum (Wumei) 5 qian. Roast until cooked, crush, and place in a pot to stir-fry until hot. When the malaria has not yet started, wrap the medicine in thin cloth and bind it tightly above the navel. First fill the navel cavity with 3 fen of herb powder. The subsequent attack will be lighter. Repeat heating and binding; it is always effective, especially for intermittent malaria. Mild cases cure with one dose, severe cases with two. For elderly people unwilling to take oral medicine, this is most effective.
Another Formula: Leaves of Longan Tree (Longyan Ye): 11 leaves for men, 12 for women. Add 3 qian white sesame seeds. Decoct to make a concentrated juice. Take half an hour before the malaria starts. After taking, cover with a blanket and lie down for a while. Recovery follows with sweating. When other medicines fail, this is best.
