Please refer to the end of the previous chapter "Clinical Experience in Treating Smallpox" as it is crucial. On the left side for males and the right side for females, there is a depression at the corner of the abdomen, which is the fire point (Huoxue) that stops diarrhea. The method involves having the patient let their hand hang naturally by the abdominal corner, then bend and twist the hand while keeping it still. Using the area below the Qugu acupoint (CV6, Curved Bone) as a reference, there will inevitably be a depression here; apply moxibustion with a lit lamp wick three times consecutively at this spot, and the diarrhea will stop spontaneously. However, vomiting and diarrhea occurring before the eruption of smallpox should not be treated arbitrarily, lest the pathogenic toxins become stagnant. If diarrhea persists after the eruption of smallpox, treatment should be administered, as one must worry that deficiency of Middle Qi (Zhong Qi) will hinder the filling and rising of the pustules.
Diarrhea presents in two main types. Diarrhea accompanied by yellow, foul-smelling stools and red, scanty urine indicates that toxic heat is rushing outward, constituting Heat Diarrhea (Re Xie); the smallpox lesions will necessarily be red or purplish, and the primary formula is Jiawei Siling San (Modified Four-Ingredient Poria Decoction). Diarrhea with clear, white, slippery stools indicates Deficiency-Cold (Xu Han); the smallpox lesions will necessarily be pale white, and the primary formula is Shen-Zhu San (Ginseng and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder). If deficiency-type diarrhea persists, Seven-Ingredient Cardamom Pills (Qiwei Doukou Wan) can be used concurrently, ensuring a cure. This is an empirical formula from Mr. Nie Jiuwu for treating smallpox.
Jiawei Siling San (Modified Four-Ingredient Poria Decoction): Treats heat-type diarrhea in smallpox with miraculous effect. It must absolutely not be taken by those with deficiency-type diarrhea. Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Mu Tong (Akebia Caulis) each 8 fen; Ze Xie (Alisma), Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria) each 7 fen; Chuan Lian (Coptis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, stir-fried), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, selected clean, stir-fried until fragrant and crushed), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) each 5 fen; Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla) one cluster. Decoct in water and take orally.
Shen-Zhu San (Ginseng and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder): Treats deficiency-type diarrhea in smallpox, as well as ordinary spleen-deficiency diarrhea, with repeated successful trials. Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, soil-stir-fried) 1 liang; Ruan Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix, Korean Ginseng may also be used) 4 qian; Nan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile, note: original text has formatting errors/omissions here).
Qiwei Doukou Wan (Seven-Ingredient Cardamom Pills): Indications are the same as Shen-Zhu San. Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen), He Zi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus) (both prepared as previously described), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Bai Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae, roasted), Nan Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix)... Ten pills. Chew finely with tea, wrap in paper, and apply to the umbilicus.
Another prescription: Zhang Pi (Cinnamomi Cortex), Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), Lao Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), all pounded together, stir-fried hot, and applied as a compress to the lower abdomen. For women, apply to the vulva to promote urination.
One bunch of Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), made into a cake and applied to the umbilicus. Place a tin pot filled with boiling water on top of the scallion cake to warm it, which promotes urination.
