This is caused by extreme excess of Heart Fire. Take a small cup of blood from the comb of a rooster, immerse the tongue in it, and it will immediately shrink. Alternatively, treat according to other formulas for swollen tongue.
Another formula: Use 3–4 qian of genuine Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), decoct into a concentrated liquid, and use this liquid to soak the tongue; this is also effective.
Yet another formula: Take one bucket of well water. Have someone carry the bucket while another person guides the patient forward without any assistance. When the patient is close to the body, suddenly splash the water directly onto the face; the tongue will naturally retract. This formula is only suitable during summer. After the tongue retracts, continue to administer a decoction of 2–3 qian of Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连).
Plum-blossom Borneol (Bingpian, 冰片) from the top grade should be ground into fine powder and sprinkled on the tongue; it shrinks upon application. A dose of 5 qian is required for efficacy.
This condition is named Cuishue Feng (Emerald Tongue Wind). Use the tongue of a kingfisher (removed and dried in the shade for later use) to poke or dab the two temples a few times, and it will heal immediately.
Puncture the tip of the tongue with a silver needle to drain all the foul blood, then apply candle wax oil to the area; it will heal immediately.
Sudden bleeding from the tongue like a gushing spring, with blood color either purple or black, is due to Heart Fire flaming upward causing reckless movement of hot blood. Use Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction, see "Formulas for Internal and External Use") plus 3 qian of Sophorae Flos (Huaihua, 槐花), decoct and take orally; it heals instantly. Alternatively, treat according to the aforementioned formulas for swollen tongue; applying soot from the bottom of a cooking pot is even more wonderful.
Another formula: Grind Liriope Tuber (Maocaogen, 茅草根), raw Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi, 车前子), and tangled hair into powder each, and blow or apply to the site to stop bleeding immediately. This is an empirical formula by Linwu Shanren.
Yet another formula: Stir-fry Sophorae Flos (Huaihua, 槐花), grind, and sprinkle on the lesion. Or, burn human hair to ash, mix with vinegar, and apply externally.
Whenever the tongue is ulcerated and extremely painful, making eating difficult, use 3–4 qian of Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸) ground into powder, mixed with good vinegar, applied to the soles of both feet, bound tightly with cloth, and changed every few hours; the effect is miraculous. Alternatively, combine with Renzhongbai San (Human Urine Deposit Powder, see Dental Section) for better results.
This is a malignant condition. It begins like a bean, gradually enlarges to resemble a mushroom, causes pain, becomes red and ulcerated without skin, is lighter in the morning and heavier in the evening, and is caused by Heat-Toxin of the Heart and Spleen. Use 5 fen of [Mineral Drug] (Shi, likely referring to a specific mineral or typo in original text, often associated with alchemical preparations in such contexts) and Renzhongbai (Human Urine Deposit, 人中白), 1 qian each of moss on tiles (Washang Qingtai, 瓦上青苔), Peltastemum Volubile (Wasong, 瓦松), and soft chicken manure (Tang Jifen, 溏鸡粪). Place these medicines into two silver jars, seal them tightly, cover the outside with salt mud, and heat over charcoal fire until red-hot. Wait for the duration of three incense sticks. After cooling, open the jar, remove the medicine, add 1 fen of top-grade Plum-blossom Borneol (Bingpian, 冰片) and 1 fen of Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), and grind together into fine powder. Before use, first puncture the bloody tumor with a porcelain needle, apply a small amount of the powder, and cover with Polygonatum Multiflorum powder (Puhuang, 蒲黄). Internally, administer Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction, see "Formulas for Internal and External Use") added with Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), and Mentha Haplocalyx (Bohe, 薄荷), decocted and taken orally; it will heal. Alternatively, using the method of applying Earthworm (Dilong, 地龙) and Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸) to the feet as mentioned above is even more wonderful. If blood falls out, apply Suoyangsoot (Baicaoshuang, 百草霜) or Polygonatum Multiflorum powder (Puhuang, 蒲黄); both are effective. Additionally, use Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction) plus 3 qian of Sophorae Flos (Huaihua, 槐花), decocted and taken orally; this also treats Chongshe (Double Tongue) with great efficacy.
