(From the first chapter of Cao Fangyu's Treatise on Formulas)
In the past, when Sun Simiao wrote his medical books and described various diseases, he always began with wind-stroke (Zhong Feng); when describing wind-stroke, he always began with Hong Kong Foot (Jiao Qi). Was this without meaning? It is likely because wind is the chief of all diseases, and the qi of low-lying dampness and steaming oppression... [Text fragmentary] ...and the art of Su... dare...
Treating wind-toxin causing stubborn bi-syndrome in the four limbs, edema of hands and feet, and weakness of the legs. These are conditions that physicians often consider untreatable; this formula addresses all of them.
Asparagus Root (Tianmendong), cut into half dou, pounded and squeezed to extract juice; Raw Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), processed as above; Goji Berry (Gouqizi), cut into three dou, washed clean, boiled in two shi five dou of water to obtain one shi three sheng. The above six ingredients are placed together in a large copper vessel. Using gentle heat, first decoct the Rehmannia and Asparagus root juices until reduced by half. Then combine and decoct to obtain two large dou. Add the subsequent herbs and decoct to obtain one sheng, then pour into the copper vessel and heat in a double boiler.
Poria (Baifuling), Biota Seed (Baiziren), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), Polygonatum Rhizome (Weirui), Acorus Rhizome (Changpu), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Alisma Rhizome (Zexie), Yam (Shuyu), Ginseng (Renshen), Dendrobium Stem (Shihu), Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), Eucommia Bark (Duzhong), [Fragment: Xi], [Fragment: Chen], [Fragment: Sheng].
The above thirty-eight ingredients are added to the previous decoction, along with three sheng each of ox marrow and deer marrow, which is highly effective. If urination is obstructed, remove Biota Seed and add Gastrodia Rhizome (Qinjiao) two liang and Dry Rehmannia Root (Gan Dihuang) six liang. If impotence and loss of essence occur, remove... The above herbs are chopped and soaked in eight dou of wine for seven days. Take one ge warm, four to five times daily, and once at night.
