Discourse states: The Central Region is flat and damp, conforming to the virtue of Earth, and generates all things. Therefore, people in China have a varied diet but lack physical labor, making them prone to Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome) and Jue syndrome (cold extremities). When illness occurs, Qi and Blood must adapt to the four seasons; specifically, Anqiao (massage and stretching exercises) are prohibited in winter because one wishes not to disturb Yang Qi.
Treatment for Hongjiaojiao (Gouty arthritis / Foot swelling and pain) and wind pathogens affecting the four limbs. One should first calm the mind, sit upright, extend both legs while standing, point toes upward, stretch hands to align with toe tips, and gradually reach the soles of the feet. If obese and hands cannot reach the feet, use two cotton ropes.
If Hongjiaojiao is just beginning, moxa points Fengshi (GB31) and Zusanli (ST36), 21 moxa cones each, to drain wind-dampness and toxic vapors. If feeling stifling heat, do not moxa, as internal heat already exists, and moxa would greatly exacerbate it.
Acupoint location method: For Fengshi point, let the patient stand upright with arms hanging down along the thighs; the tip of the middle finger indicates the point. For Zusanli point, three cun below the knee on the lateral side of the tibia, where slight depression is felt upon pressure, is the point. Another method: press deeply with a finger until the foot Yangming pulse (Duyang pulse) disappears; this serves as the standard.
Guo Duguan suffered from chronic Hongjiaojiao. Upon onset, he experienced chills, fever, distension, fullness, and rebellious Qi. Taking hot-natured medicines worsened his condition. Zhao used Yan Nian Fuling Yin (Longevity Poria Decoction) from *Waitai Miyao* to direct Qi downward, followed by Liuwu Maziren Wan (Six-Ingredient Hemp Seed Pill) to drain heat. Upon subsequent visit, he still suffered from dryness and heat, so Zhao prescribed Zixue (Purple Snow), which yielded excellent results.
Han Zhengyan, Shaofu Jian, suffered from inability to move his hands and feet. All physicians diagnosed it as Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke) and needled his arms and legs. Zhao said, "This is Hongjiaojiao." He administered this decoction, and the patient recovered.
