(The initial stage of treatment focuses on dispersing and venting the rash, while the subsequent stage focuses on nourishing Yin and clearing the stomach.)
Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Gupi (Cortex Moutan), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Sangpi (Mori Cortex), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chuanbei (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Yiren (Coicis Semen), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix). If there is phlegm, add Beishashen (Glehniae Radix) and Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen); if there is food stagnation, add Luobozhi (Raphani Semen). Symptomatic modifications follow the methods described previously. The initial eruption is difficult to achieve, and the subsequent recovery is even more challenging. One cause is uncleared stomach fire leading to ya gang (gangrenous stomatitis with foul odor); another is uncleared lung fire transferring heat to the large intestine, resulting in xie li (dysentery or diarrhea). At the onset of dysentery, use Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) urgently to purge toxins. If Dahuang is unsuitable, use Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to clear the fire. For ya gang, use Shigao urgently. For red and bloodshot eyes, use Dahuang to purge fire. For eye pain, use Shigao and Huanglian.
If wind-cold is contracted subsequently, still use exterior-dispersing methods. If yin deficiency with fever occurs subsequently, still use yin-nourishing and blood-tonifying herbs. Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) can be used. If food stagnation remains uncleared subsequently, still use digestion-promoting herbs. Infant ru gang (infantile oral ulcers or nutritional stomatitis) is difficult to treat; only Wugu Chong (Dermolepidota larva) offers a method that may save one in ten thousand. For residual toxins subsequently, still use cooling and detoxifying herbs. For phlegm obstruction with panting subsequently, still use phlegm-resolving and lung-clearing herbs. Sudden angina-like chest pain subsequently indicates deficient yuan qi (original qi) due to prior exposure to yi li (epidemic pathogenic factors). Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) are generally avoided (as the focus is on nourishing yin), but they are effective for true deficiency-cold. Since the primary approach is nourishing yin, Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) is not used, but it can be used for true cold syndromes. Excessive consumption of Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) causes extreme dryness in the lungs and unquenchable thirst; this can only be stopped by using Lizhi (Pyrri Fructus juice) to astringe and moisten. Any star-like spots in the eyes are most difficult to treat with Sanbaigen (Sanbaima root). Qing Damai Cao (Hordei Viridis Herba) can also be used as a substitute or adjunct.
