Mr. Yu (Left side): The Liver is referred to as the "General Officer." Its nature is Yin, its substance/function is Yang, and its onset of disease is rapid. Due to excessive mental labor, Liver Yang moves internally, transforming into Wind that disturbs upward, accompanied by Phlegm-Heat. This clouds the Clear Orifices (the orifices of the head responsible for clarity), causing the Spirit (Shen) to lose autonomous control. Suddenly, there is clouded consciousness and muteness, lockjaw, and convulsions of the four limbs. The pulse is deep and seemingly hidden. This is primarily due to Blood deficiency failing to nourish the Liver; Liver Heat generates Wind. Since the Liver governs the sinews, when Liver Wind enters the sinews, convulsions occur. Phlegm-Qi obstruction also renders the pulse vessels unfavorable. This is a severe case of Spasm and Convulsion (Jing Jue). The Liver belongs to the category of "Hard Organs" (Gang Zang); only softening methods can subdue it. The proposed treatment is to Soften the Liver, Extinguish Wind, Clear the Spirit, and Eliminate Phlegm.
Raw White Peony Root (Bai Shao, 2 qian) with Cinnabar (Zhu Fu Shen, 3 qian) Fresh Bamboo Sap (Xian Zhu Ru, 2 qian) Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gou Teng, added later, 3 qain) Antelope Horn (Ling Yang Pian, decocted separately and mixed in, 8 fen) Polygala Root (Yuan Zhi, water-fried, 1 qian) Hygrophylla Seed (Tian Zhu Huang, 1.5 qian) Fritillaria Bulb (Chuan Bei Mu, 3 qian) Gastrodia Tuber (Tian Ma, baked, 0.8 fen) Acorus Rhizome (Shi Chang Pu, 0.8 fen) Light Bamboo Oil (Dan Zhu You, 1 liang) Ginger Juice (Sheng Jiang Zhi, mixed together, 2 drops)
Mr. Zhao (Left side): Wind-Yang disturbs upward, affecting the vertex (Dian Ding). Internal obstruction by Phlegm-Dampness causes the Stomach to lose its harmonious descending function. Thus, tinnitus, hearing loss, red eyes, and blurred vision are caused by the pathology of Wind-Yang. Dizziness and nausea result from Stomach Qi failing to descend and Turbid Yin rising counterflowingly. The tongue body is red with a yellow coating, and the pulse is wiry and rapid. Yin is deficient below, while Yang floats above; the critical signs are obvious. Treatment should focus on Extinguishing Wind, Clearing the Liver, and Transforming Phlegm-Turbidity.
Mint Leaf (Bo He Ye, 0.8 fen) Abalone Shell (Shi Jue Ming, 4 qian) Prunus Armeniaca Kernel (Rui Ren, cleaned, 2 qian) Pinellia Tuber (Ban Xia, prepared, 1.5 qian) Mulberry Leaf (Sang Ye, winter-harvested, 3 qian) Fried Bamboo Sap (Zhu Ru, fried, 1.5 qian) Chrysanthemum Flower (Ju Hua, sweet, 3 qian) Prunella Spike (Xia Ku Cao, flower, 1.5 qian) Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gou Teng, added later, 3 qian)
Mr. Ding (Left side): Excessive mental labor leads to Heart and Kidney insufficiency, making Liver Yang prone to rising and Liver Qi prone to moving. Qi stagnation in the middle jiao causes pulling pain in the chest and epigastrium; Yang rising upward causes dizziness and blurred vision; failure of communication between Heart and Kidney results in insomnia at night. The Kidneys govern bones, and the Liver governs sinews. Deficiency of Blood in the Liver and Kidneys, lacking nourishment, leads to generalized body soreness and discomfort. The method should be to Tonify and Harmonize Heart and Kidney, Soften the Liver, and Submerge Yang.
Raw White Peony Root (Bai Shao, 2 qian) with Cinnabar (Zhu Fu Shen, 3 qian) Abalone Shell (Shi Jue Ming, 4 qian) Prepared Ligustrum Fruit (Nu Zhen Zi, cooked, 2 qian) Melia Toosendan Fruit (Jin Ling Zi, 2 qian) Bamboo Sap (Zhu Ru, stir-fried with Rose Water, 1 qian) Phaseolus Angularis Bean (Ma Liao Dou, 3 qian) Unio Concha (Zi Bei Chi, 3 qian) Mulberry Fruit (Sang Shen Zi, 2 qian) Lycium Fruit (Qi Zi, sweet, 2 qian) Polygonum Multiflorum Vine (Ye Jiao Teng, 4 qian) Chrysanthemum Flower (Ju Hua, Chu variety, 1.5 qian) Tribulus Fructus (Bi Ji Li, Tong and Bai varieties, 1 qian each) Zuo Jin Pill (Zuo Jin Wan, wrapped, 0.7 qian)
Ms. Sun (Right side): After extreme anger, sudden severe pain in the heart and chest occurs, accompanied by incessant laughter, a hidden pulse, and cold limbs. Long-term emotional depression injures the Liver; Liver disease predisposes to anger. Anger causes Qi to rush upward, resulting in severe chest pain. Qi stagnation transforms into Fire, disturbing the Dan Zhong (Pericardium region), causing incessant laughter. Qi mechanism blockage leads to cold limbs and hidden pulse. All these manifestations stem from Liver pathology. When Wood (Liver) is depressed, it must be dispersed. The approach is to Soothe the Liver, Resolve Depression, and Regulate Qi Mechanism. Mistaking this for Cold Jue (Cold Collapse) would be dangerous.

Mr. Shen (Left side): The hypochondrium is the domain of the Liver. Liver Qi, carrying Phlegm and Blood Stasis, enters the collaterals, preventing the free flow of Qi mechanism. This causes pain in the left hypochondrium, exacerbated by respiration. The Lung governs the Qi of all vessels. Therefore, it is appropriate to Diffuse Lung Qi to Soothe the Liver, transform Phlegm-Stasis, and unblock the collaterals.
