Pulse: The *Mai Jing* (Classic of Pulse Diagnosis) states: If the pulses at the Cun (inch) and Guan (bar) positions are harmonious as usual, but the pulse at the Chi (cubit) position is absent, this indicates irregular menstruation. One should expect pain in the lower abdomen radiating to the waist, and qi stagnation attacking upward to the chest and diaphragm. A floating and weak pulse at the Cun Kou (radial artery) indicates floating signifies deficiency, and weak signifies bloodlessness. An interrupted or absent pulse at the Chi position indicates irregular menstruation. A slippery pulse at the Chi position indicates abundant blood and qi, yet irregular menstruation in women. A deep pulse in the Liver channel indicates irregular menstruation and lumbar/abdominal pain; a weak and fine pulse in the Shaoyin (Kidney) channel indicates fine signifies blood deficiency. A pulse that arrives with a shape like a zither string, accompanied by lower abdominal pain, indicates irregular menstruation and sores in the orifices. A choppy pulse in the Stomach channel and a fine and slow pulse in the Shaoyin channel indicate fine signifies essence deficiency, slow indicates cold in the yin region, and choppy signifies blood stasis preventing flow; this is termed "Ju Jing" (bi-monthly menstruation), occurring once every three months. A slippery and rapid pulse in the Shaoyin channel indicates sores in the yin region; a rapid pulse indicates Qi strangury and sores in the yin region; a wiry pulse in the Shaoyin channel indicates hardness/nodules in the yin region; a floating and moving pulse in the Shaoyin channel indicates floating signifies deficiency and moving signifies pain, leading to metrorrhagia in women.
Rules for Life and Death Pulses in Women:
The *Mai Jing* states: In cases of leukorrhea with bleeding (red and white discharge) where several sheng (a unit of volume) of blood are lost, a rapid and forceful pulse indicates death, while a slow pulse indicates survival. If leukorrhea with continuous bleeding persists, a small, deficient, and slippery pulse indicates survival, whereas a large, tight, full, and rapid pulse indicates death. For a woman who has just given birth, a deep, small, and slippery pulse indicates survival, while a full, large, wiry, and urgent pulse indicates death. For a woman with hernia masses (Shan Jia) and accumulations, a wiry and urgent pulse indicates survival, while a weak pulse indicates death. During childbirth, if complicated by wind-stroke with chills and fever, wheezing with shoulder breathing, a full and floating-slow pulse indicates survival, while a small and urgent pulse indicates death. After childbirth, a blazing-fast and irregular pulse at the Cun Kou indicates death, while a deep, fine pulse that adheres to the bone and does not cease indicates survival. For a metallic wound in the yin region with unceasing bleeding, if the yin pulse cannot reach the yang level, it indicates death; if it reaches the yang level and then returns, it indicates survival. In the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy, a full, large, firm, strong, wiry, and urgent pulse indicates survival, whereas a deep and fine pulse indicates death.
Danxi stated: A fine pulse before delivery, and a flooding and rapid pulse after a miscarriage, indicate death. He also said: Before delivery, the pulse should be flooding and rapid; if it remains flooding and rapid after delivery, how can one avoid death? (This is a general statement; there are cases of survival despite a flooding and rapid pulse.)
