Pulse: If the pulse is wiry and straight, or slightly deep and fine; after sweating, if the condition is about to resolve, the pulse flows smoothly like a snake; if the pulse is hidden (Fu) and firm, it is still treatable, but if the pulse is hidden and wiry, it is a cause for sighing (poor prognosis).
Jing disease (Spasm syndrome) is difficult to treat. It is mostly caused by internal deficiency of blood and qi, leading to the formation of wind-phlegm. Symptoms include stiffness and rigidity of the head and neck, fever in the body with cold feet, redness of the head and face, shaking of the head alone, sudden lockjaw (stiff mouth), redness of the eye vessels, opisthotonos (backward arching of the back), spasticity and urgency of the hands, feet curved like a bow, and a wiry-tight pulse. This is Jing disease (Spasm syndrome). Opening the eyes without sweat indicates Gang Jing (Rigid Spasm), which belongs to Yang; closing the eyes with sweat indicates Rou Jing (Flaccid Spasm), which belongs to Yin. In general, when treating Shanghan (Cold Damage) and miscellaneous diseases, contracting wind after sweating or vomiting can also result in Jing disease (Spasm syndrome); inducing heavy sweating in patients with dampness constitution can also result in Jing disease (Spasm syndrome); inducing sweating in patients with sores/ulcers can also result in Jing disease (Spasm syndrome); excessive blood loss after childbirth can also result in Jing disease (Spasm syndrome); falling, bumping, or beating injuries where the wound has not healed yet and is exposed to wind can also result in Jing disease (Spasm syndrome), this is named Po Shang Feng (Broken Wind/Tetanus). If the body is cool, hands and feet are cold, and the pulse is deep and fine, it is named Yin Jing (Yin Spasm); if the eyes pull the corners of the mouth and hands and feet tremble and extend/flex, it is Jing disease (Spasm syndrome) caused by wind-phlegm. All these conditions should be treated with Shen Gui Yang Rong Tang (Ginseng and Angelica Decoction to Nourish the Ying) with modifications. If there is fever, wheezing, coughing, and phlegm production with a slippery and rapid pulse, it is named Tan Huo Jing (Phlegm-Fire Spasm). Use Gua Lou Zhi Shi Tang (Trichosanthes Fruit and Immature Bitter Orange Decoction) with modifications. Do not use exclusively wind-dispelling herbs, as wind herbs disperse Qi and will lead to rapid death. If the eyes are wide open, the mouth is agape, true Qi is confused and obscured, and the person is unconscious, it is determined as a fatal case with no cure. If infants develop Jing disease (Spasm syndrome) due to vomiting, diarrhea, and convulsions, it is called Jiao Gong Fan Zhang Bing (Opisthotonos Disease), and the medication method is the same as for Jing disease (Spasm syndrome).
Shen Gui Yang Rong Tang (Ginseng and Angelica Decoction to Nourish the Ying) treats all types of Jing disease (Spasm syndrome).
