When body pain, numbness, chills, fever, and headache occur during menstruation, it is due to catching a cold during the menstrual period. A woman suffered from afternoon fever, emaciated and fatigued limbs, poor appetite with no taste, amenorrhea, epistaxis, or metrorrhagia for half a year. Treatments using Qi-smoothing and heat-clearing formulas were ineffective, and she developed alternating chills and fever with frequent nausea. I diagnosed this as damage from depression and anger, leading to damp-fire in the Spleen and Stomach, causing aberrant menstrual flow. Therefore, I prescribed Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) in the morning and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) in the evening, administering several doses of each. She recovered after half a year. (See Tonification chapter.)
A woman experienced cessation of menstruation upon anger during her period, progressing to lockjaw, tendon spasms, epistaxis, headache, phlegm-induced convulsions, and upward deviation of the pupils. This indicated excessive Liver Fire. She was cured using Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) supplemented with Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis). (See Shaoyang chapter.)
A woman prone to anger had menstruation lasting over ten days, followed by indefinite dripping. She became emaciated and fatigued, with dry mouth, internal heat, night sweats profuse like washing, and severe afternoon fever. All symptoms resulted from Liver and Spleen deficiency, failing to generate Yuan Qi. She was treated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) supplemented with Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), and Longyanrou (Longan Arillus), resulting in a cure. (See Tonification chapter.)
A woman caught wind-cold during menstruation. She was quiet during the day but delirious at night. This indicated Heat entering the Blood Chamber. She was instantly relieved using Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) supplemented with Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix). However, due to remaining internal heat and dizziness, she was cured using Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) supplemented with Manjingzi (Viticis Fructus). Later, due to anger, she developed chills, fever, delirium, chest and hypochondriac distension and pain, frequent urination, and early menstruation. This indicated Liver Fire and Blood Heat causing reckless flow. She was cured using Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) supplemented with Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix). (See Female Deficiency-Wasting chapter.)
