曰气轮,在眼为白睛;肾属水,曰水轮,在眼为瞳子。至若八廓,无位有名。胆之腑为天廓;膀胱之腑为地廓;

Pulse: The eyes are essentially a fire disease; the Heart and Liver pulses are frequently rapid and surging (Hong). If these appear at the Right Cun and Guan positions, it indicates an upward rush of Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo).
The human eyes are like the sun and moon in the sky. They observe all things and perceive the finest details without exception. When the sun and moon become dim for a time, it is caused by wind, clouds, thunder, and rain. Similarly, blindness or visual impairment is caused by damage from the four climatic factors (Si Qi) and the seven emotions (Qi Qing). Generally speaking, the eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the five Zang organs and are vital to the whole body. Therefore, the five Zang organs correspond to the Five Wheels (Wu Lun), and the Eight Trigrams correspond to the Eight Palaces (Ba Kuo).
The Five Wheels are as follows: The Liver belongs to Wood, called the Wind Wheel (Feng Lun), corresponding to the cornea/pupil area (Wu Jing) in the eye; the Heart belongs to Fire, called the Fire Wheel (Huo Lun), corresponding to the canthi (corners of the eyes); the Spleen belongs to Earth, called the Flesh Wheel (Rou Lun), corresponding to the upper and lower eyelids; the Lung belongs to Metal, called the Qi Wheel (Qi Lun), corresponding to the sclera (white part of the eye); the Kidney belongs to Water, called the Water Wheel (Shui Lun), corresponding to the pupil.
As for the Eight Palaces, they have names but no fixed positions. The Gallbladder corresponds to the Heaven Palace (Tian Kuo); the Bladder to the Earth Palace (Di Kuo); the Ming Men (Gate of Life) to the Water Palace (Shui Kuo); the Small Intestine to the Fire Palace (Huo Kuo); the Kidney to the Wind Palace (Feng Kuo); the Spleen to the Thunder Palace (Lei Kuo); the Large Intestine to the Mountain Palace (Shan Kuo); and the San Jiao (Triple Burner) to the Marsh Palace (Ze Kuo). Although these constitute the root of the eyes, the face envelops the five Zang organs. If wind-heat accumulates, or if the qi of the seven emotions becomes stagnant and does not disperse, it attacks the eyes upward. Depending on the affected Zang organ, symptoms may include swelling, redness, pain, photophobia (aversion to light), difficulty opening the eyes due to grittiness, clouding opacities (Yun Yi), cataracts, or white membranes obscuring the vision. There are seventy-two such syndromes. Treatment must investigate the cause. For wind, dispel it; for heat, cool it; for qi stagnation, regulate and smooth it; for opacities, apply drops to clear them; for swelling and pain, reduce swelling and stop pain. This is the general principle of treatment. One must absolutely avoid using needles or knives for surgical removal; occasional success is merely luck. Only this Wan Ming Gao (Ten Thousand Brightness Ointment) encompasses the Five Elements internally and externally, unifies the interior and exterior, adapts to deficiency and excess, considers the depth of new versus chronic diseases, and adjusts for age without rigid rules, varying freely with the illness. Although eye diseases have many names, the medicinal treatments cover them all. Furthermore, one must not overuse cold/clearing agents to freeze the face and eyes, which would impede blood flow and potentially lead to stubborn diseases. Additionally, Kidney Deficiency causes blurred vision; one should warm the Lower Yuan (Lower Origin) to nourish Kidney Water. However, there are regional differences. People in the North suffer from eye diseases frequently because they expose themselves to wind and sand during the day and sleep on heated kang beds at night; the steaming effect of these two factors causes the disease. Treatment should use cooling herbs, differing from the South.
However, after children suffer from smallpox/rash, toxic heat flows into the Heart and Liver meridians and cannot dissipate on its own, attacking the eyes upward. Symptoms include unclear vision, seeing black spots, tearing in the wind, grittiness, and eventual formation of opacities. Or, women suffering from facial wind may experience sudden redness of the eyes. Or, anger and frustration injure the Heart and Lung meridians, leading to opacities and white membranes obscuring vision over time. If neglected, the clouding thickens, vision becomes unclear, causing lifelong harm. Applying a dot of Wan Ming Gao disperses the cloud like wind blowing away mist, revealing the bright sun, illuminating everything. Folk sayings attribute eye issues to offending spirits during earth-moving, leading people to pray foolishly. This is the error of fools, not the profound theory of enlightened physicians. Thus, falling into blindness has its reasons. Enlightened individuals should discriminate carefully. I have written down two internal/external medications listed below, which I have personally tested with miraculous effects. I spread them widely to benefit the world as treasures. Those who obtain them should cherish them greatly.
The eyes are the essence of the six Fu organs and five Zang organs. Redness and flesh proliferation at the outer canthus indicate Excess Heat in the Heart Meridian; redness and engorged blood vessels at the inner canthus indicate Deficient Heat in the Heart Meridian. Redness and white opacities on the cornea indicate Liver disease; red veins and membranes on the sclera indicate Lung disease; swollen eyelids resembling peaches indicate Spleen disease; tearing in the wind and seeing spots when sitting up indicate Kidney disease. Redness with pain indicates Liver Excess Heat; photophobia indicates Spleen Excess; unclear vision indicates Spleen Deficiency; excessive hard discharge indicates Lung Excess; thin non-sticky discharge indicates Lung Deficiency; curled eyelashes (trichiasis) indicate Spleen Wind; pterygium (fleshy growth over the cornea) indicates Heart Heat; nyctalopia (night blindness) is seeing clearly by day but not by night; cyanopsia (green blindness) is clear pupils but inability to see objects directly.
This secret empirical formula for ophthalmology is the number one prescription under heaven.

All seventy-two ingredients are cut into fine slices. Use one bucket of child's urine clarified with water, placed in a porcelain basin. Add three jin of Calcined Calamine (Lu Gan Shi), soak for one day and night, clarify, and soak again. Remove the Calamine, place it in a Hun Yuan Ball (a grinding vessel), and roast it red. Soak it in the medicinal liquid. Repeat this ten-plus times. After cooling, remove the Calamine, seal it in a Yangcheng jar, and fire it. Each jar fires for the duration of three incense sticks. The lighter, clearer portion combined with subsequent herbs treats blindness; the heavier, bottom portion treats fiery eyes. Herb modifications follow. If not fired in a jar, grind the Calamine finely, wash with water to separate clear and turbid parts for dual use.
If preparing ten liang of processed Calamine, add five qian of Succinum (Hu Po), eight qian of Pearl (Zhen Zhu), all passed through the Hun Yuan Ball to become extremely fine powder. Add three qian of Borax (Bing Pian), three liang of Official Borax (Guan Peng), passed over copper ware. Six qian raw Cuttlebone (Hai Piao Xiao), two liang Chalcanthite (Dan Fan), passed over copper tiles. Two liang White Malachite (Bai Cui), roasted red and soaked in child's urine repeatedly until it becomes a greasy powder. Three qian Eagle Droppings (Ying Fen), baked on bamboo leaves and ground fine. Three qian Bear Bile (Xiong Dan), baked on pottery until nature is preserved, then ground. One liang true Human Feces (Ren Tui), washed, stir-fried yellow until nature is preserved, ground fine. One liang Equiseti Herba (Mu Zei), baked and ground fine. Five qian Alum (Ku Fan), three qian Calomel (Qing Fen), three qian Cinnabar (Shen Sha), three qian Glauber's Salt (Pi Xiao). These are the full ingredient weights. Treatment should still be adjusted according to the specific eye disease; efficacy is assured.
For long-standing eye disease with old sand-like opacities, add Cuttlebone, Coral, Azurite (Ceng Qing), and Pearl, all ground extremely fine.
For a sore embracing the black pupil, add a little purified Mercury Sulfide (Ling Sha) mixed with White Bird Dropping (Bai Ding Xiang), stirred evenly with a crow feather.
For blood pouring into the pupil, add Official Borax, Azurite (which is Chalcanthite), Succinum, and a little Mirabilite, ground fine.

For internal cataract qi, add Azurite, Bear Bile, Coral, Succinum, Pearl, and a little Cinnabar.
For pterygium, add a little Ammonium Chloride (Niao Sha), Eagle Droppings, and Human Feces.
For elderly patients with dense clouding opacities covering the pupil for many years, use the full formula as drops.
For cold tearing and blurriness triggered by wind, treat with the main formula alone; no additions needed, except a small amount of Borax.
For trichiasis, add Pearl, Borax, and Succinum.
For red erosion of the eyelid margins (wind-strand), add Borax and Pearl, then wash thoroughly after fumigating with one liang Copper Green (Tong Lv) mixed with Sky Eggplant Juice and Mugwort.
