心、包络、大小肠、三焦,皆称之曰手。足之三阳,从头走足(足太阳膀胱,从头睛明,而走足小指之至阴;
The human body is a Taiji (Supreme Ultimate). Stillness generates Yin, forming the Zang organs (Yin organs); movement generates Yang, forming the Fu organs (Yang organs). Movement and stillness are mutually rooted. The Xi Men (Gate of Inhalation), connected to the trachea within, along with the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian and Hand-Shaoyin Heart meridian, reside above the diaphragm; the Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian, Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian, and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian reside below in the abdomen. The number of Zang organs is five, their form symbolizes Earth, they are static and square.
Connected to the esophagus, the Foot-Yangming Stomach meridian, Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine meridian, and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian run continuously. The Foot-Taiyang Bladder meridian (has an outlet but no inlet) and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian (has an inlet but no outlet) stand in contrast. The number of Fu organs is five, their image symbolizes Heaven, they are dynamic and vigorous. The Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao (Triple Burner) meridian and Hand-Jueyin Pericardium meridian have meridians but no distinct physical form.
Regarding the position of the Zang organs: Li (Fire) represents the Heart Fire, situated in the South; Kan (Water) represents the Kidney Water, situated in the North; Kun (Earth) represents the Spleen Earth, situated in the Center; the Liver does not fully reside on the left, but Zhen (Wood) represents the Liver Wood, situated on the left, with Qi moving naturally to the left; the Lung does not fully reside on the right, but Dui (Metal) represents the Lung Metal, situated on the right, with Qi moving naturally to the right.
Regarding the position of the Fu organs: First is the Stomach, which receives and stores water and grain; next is the Small Intestine, which separates clear from turbid water and grain; then the Large Intestine digests the grain, the Bladder渗 (seeps/drainages) the water, and the Gallbladder oversees these affairs.
Regarding Yin-Yang pairing: The Heart pairs with the Small Intestine, Ding (Yin Fire) and Bing (Yang Fire) share the same source; the Lung pairs with the Large Intestine, Xin (Yin Metal) and Geng (Yang Metal) originate from one root; the Spleen pairs with the Stomach, Ji (Yin Earth) and Wu (Yang Earth) dwell together; the Liver pairs with the Gallbladder, Yi (Yin Wood) and Jia (Yang Wood) are of the same body; the Kidney pairs with the Bladder, Gui (Yin Water) and Ren (Yang Water) share the same origin; the Pericardium pairs with the Sanjiao, Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi) are close.
Regarding Yin-Yang interaction: The Three Yin meridians descend from Heaven: Hand-Taiyin Lung, Hand-Shaoyin Heart, and Hand-Jueyin Pericardium are listed in the upper part; the Three Yang meridians ascend from Earth: Hand-Yangming Large Intestine, Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine, and Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao are listed in the lower part. Among them, Spleen Yin and Stomach Yang, Liver Yin and Gallbladder Yang, Kidney Yin and Bladder Yang alternate and assist each other.
Regarding Zang-Fu meridians: The Three Yin meridians of the Hand travel from the chest to the hand (Hand-Taiyin Lung from Zhongfu [LU1] to Shaoshang [LU11] at the tip of the thumb; Hand-Shaoyin Heart from Jiquan [HT1] to Shaochong [HT9] at the tip of the little finger; Hand-Jueyin Pericardium from Tianquan [PC2] to Zhongchong [PC9] at the tip of the middle finger); the Three Yang meridians of the Hand travel from the hand to the head (Hand-Yangming Large Intestine from Shangyang [LI1] at the tip of the thumb to Yingxiang [LI20] on the head; Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine from the tip of the little finger to Tinggong [SI19] on the head; Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao from Guanchong [TE1] at the tip of the ring finger to Sizhukong [TE23] on the head). Therefore, Lung, Heart, Pericardium, Large and Small Intestines, and Sanjiao are all called "Hand" meridians.
The Three Yang meridians of the Foot travel from the head to the foot (Foot-Taiyang Bladder from Jingming [BL1] on the head to Zhiyin [BL67] at the tip of the little toe; Foot-Yangming Stomach from Touwei [ST8] on the head to Lidi [ST45] at the tip of the second toe; Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder from Tongziliao [GB1] on the head to Qiaoyin [GB44] at the tip of the fourth toe); the Three Yin meridians of the Foot travel from the foot to the abdomen (Foot-Taiyin Spleen from Yinbai [SP1] at the tip of the big toe to Dabao [SP21] on the abdomen; Foot-Shaoyin Kidney from Yongquan [KI1] on the sole of the foot to Shufu [KI27] on the abdomen; Foot-Jueyin Liver from Dadun [LR1] at the tip of the big toe to Qimen [LR14] on the abdomen). Therefore, Bladder, Stomach, Gallbladder, Spleen, Kidney, and Liver are all called "Foot" meridians.
Regarding the degree of Yin and Yang: Taiyin and Taiyang are primary; Shaoyin and Shaoyang are secondary; Jueyin (end of Yin) and Yangming (combination of left and right Yang, two Yangs combined) are tertiary (based on Wang Qiyuan's *Neijing Zhu*). Lung and Spleen receive the primary Yin Qi, hence called Taiyin; Heart and Kidney belong to Shaoyin; Pericardium and Liver belong to Jueyin. The reception of Yin Qi varies accordingly. Bladder and Small Intestine receive the primary Yang Qi, hence called Taiyang; Sanjiao and Gallbladder belong to Shaoyang; Stomach and Large Intestine belong to Yangming. The reception of Yang Qi varies accordingly.
Regarding Zang-Fu functions: The Heart governs the whole body, while the Small Intestine is the Official of Reception and Storage; the Lung announces all matters, while the Large Intestine is the Official of Conduction; the Liver plans strategies for a thousand miles, while the Gallbladder is the Official of Decision; the Spleen nourishes the four limbs, while the Stomach is the Official of Granary; the Kidney penetrates the hundred bones, while the Bladder is the Official of Fluids; the Sanjiao is the Father of Qi, and the Pericardium is the Mother of Blood.
One Zang pairs with one Fu; there are five Zang but six Fu because the Sanjiao belongs to the Fu category, thus speaking of six Fu. However, since Sanjiao is a Fu and called one of the six Fu, and the Pericardium is a Zang, logically it could also be called one of the six Zang. From this perspective, speaking of six Fu necessitates speaking of six Zang; speaking of five Zang implies only five Fu, to align with the numbers of Heaven and Earth. Why should theories differ by speaking of five Zang and six Fu? Detailed exposition of Zang and Fu is clear and verifiable, yet there is something that neither departs from nor mixes with Zang and Fu, which cannot be depicted by images or transmitted by words; its wonder lies in the Mysterious Pass (Xuan Guan).
