Chijiao Wugong (Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans, half a strip, processed with wine) Shexiang (Musk, a small amount) Chuanwu Jian (Aconiti Radix lateralis preparata tip, three pieces, raw)
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take half a "zi" (a traditional unit of weight) per dose. Mix with water boiled in gold or silver vessels and take orally.
For treating umbilical swelling: First wash the area with a decoction of Schizonepetae Herba (Jingjie). Take a piece of scallion leaf skin, roast it over fire to remove "fire toxicity," then place it on the ground to dissipate the heat. Scrape it thin with fingernails and apply it to the swollen area.
For treating oozing from the umbilicus, or redness, swelling, and pain caused by water or milk entering the umbilicus:
Apply powdered Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) externally. Alternatively, ash of Bufo bufo gargarizans (Hanma), powder of Halloysit Rubrum (Baishizhi), or ash of hair treated with oil can be applied externally; all are effective.
For treating yellow-red complexion, rapid panting, and inability to cry. This is due to fetal qi carrying heat toxins that flow into the Heart and Spleen, causing tongue stiffness, cyanotic lips, facial muscle contraction, and difficulty in suckling.
Take two straight silkworms (Zhi Jiangcan), remove the mouthparts, lightly stir-fry, grind into powder, mix with honey, and apply to the middle of the lips. Effective!
For treating "hooked intestine," "locked belly," and other forms of neonatal lockjaw (Cuokou), where internal qi causes pulling pain and intestinal stagnation prevents free flow, urgent unblocking and purging are required; this prescription is highly effective. (See formula previously mentioned.) If white foam issues from the mouth and limbs become cold, it is a dire prognosis, especially critical within the first seven days after birth. Another extremely effective method: if there are millet-sized blisters on the infant's gums, dip a cloth-wrapped finger in warm water and gently rub the blisters until they break; the infant will then open its mouth and stabilize. This applies to neonatal tetanus as well.
For treating fetal wind and neonatal lockjaw/umbilical tetanus occurring up to 100 days after birth.
Take forty-nine scorpion tails (Xie Shao), stir-fry dry with ginger juice, remove silk-like threads and mouths, and grind together into powder. Add Borneolum Syntheticum (Naozi) and raw Musk (Shexiang) in small amounts, grind uniformly, and combine with two purple rooster livers (Zi Xiongji Gan) for administration.
For treating newborns who refuse to suckle and have urinary retention.
Take one cun of scallion white (Congbai), split into four parts, decoct with milk in a silver or ceramic vessel, and administer. Immediate effect!
Also treats newborns with trismus (unable to open mouth) and inability to suckle.
Take one red-footed centipede (Chizu Wugong), remove legs, roast until charred, grind finely into powder. Use half a qian per dose. Mix with two he of pig milk, blend evenly, and administer in three to four divided doses.
If the newborn's mouth is not cleaned thoroughly, filth enters the abdomen, causing abdominal distension, shortness of breath, and inability to suckle.
Chifuling (Poria cocos with red skin, peeled) Chuanhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, de-stamened) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried). Equal parts.
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey, size of Sophorae Semen (Wutongzi). Administer one pill at a time, mixed with milk and given orally.
