Regarding the disease of hypochondriac pain, medical classics state: The bilateral hypochondrium is the manifestation of the Liver. It also says: Patients with Liver disease suffer from pain under the bilateral hypochondrium. This is often caused by extreme fatigue, anger, sorrow, worry, overthinking, or fright, which injure the Liver. Once the Liver is injured, accumulated Qi attacks and infiltrates; if it attacks the left side, there is pain in the left hypochondrium; if it attacks the right side, there is pain in the right hypochondrium; if rebellious Qi shifts to both hypochondria, both sides hurt. If it persists for a long time without healing, the pathogen flows into the sinews, potentially causing heaviness and dragging sensation in the waist and legs, cramping of the tendons in both thighs, or inability to move the four limbs.
Generally speaking, among all Qi stagnation disorders, hypochondriac pain caused by Bladder Qi is the most difficult to treat. *Shenbao Wan* (Divine Preservation Pill) can treat it. There is also a Liver accumulation named *Feiqi* (Fat Qi), located under the left hypochondrium, as large as an inverted cup. Its symptoms include pain under the left hypochondrium radiating to the lower abdomen, cold feet, and tendon spasms. There is also a Lung accumulation named *Xiben* (Panting Accumulation), located under the right hypochondrium, as large as an inverted cup. Its symptoms include panting and surging breath. *Feiqi Wan* (Fat Qi Pill) treats the Liver accumulation, and *Xiben Tang* (Panting Decoction) treats the Lung accumulation. These formulas are recorded later.
