On the affected side, use a plum-blossom needle to puncture acupoints such as Dicang (ST4, Corner of Mouth), Heliao (SI18, Before Earlobe), Jia Chengjiang (EX-UE10, Flanking Chin), Jiache (ST6, Jawbone), Xiaguan (ST7, Below Joint), Yangbai (GB14, Above Pupil), Sibai (ST2, Below Pupil), Taiyang (EX-HN5, Temporalis), and Yifeng (TE17, Behind Earlobe) to induce slight bleeding. Apply small-sized cups for suction for 5 to 10 minutes, once every other day. This method yields good results during the inflammatory phase or when sequelae involve facial muscle traction and inversion phenomena (*Zhenjiu Zhiliao Shouce*).
"Before the anterior aspect of the neck at one cun five san yang qian, Zhen Quan once said: 'One cun,' [with] three-edged needle bleeding, head wind resolves; salt oil rubs the root, illness naturally heals" (*Zhenjiu Dacheng · Xingji Zongyao Ge*).
To treat head wind heat pain and extreme swelling of the head, puncture with a three-edged needle around below the one-cun mark; the headache and swelling will immediately subside. Acupoint: Qian Ding (GV20, Front Vertex) (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).
To treat blurred vision, unclear sight, red and painful eyes, and eyelid twitching, it is also said that puncturing three times with a fine three-edged needle restores clear vision. Acupoint: Cuanzhu (BL2, Groove at Inner End of Eyebrow) (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).
In 1957, medical staff at the Xiamen Sea Dyke construction site in Fujian Province used the method of needle-pricking the back of the ear to bleed for treating hordeolum (stye), certain keratitis, and other ophthalmic diseases, achieving satisfactory results (*Zhenjiu Shi Manhua*).
To treat sudden tongue swelling, prick the large vessels on both sides under the tongue to let blood out. Do not prick the center under the tongue; if vessel blood flows incessantly, it can be fatal. If the above treatment fails, or if several sheng (a unit of volume) of blood are lost, heat an iron fence until red-hot and apply it to the wound several times to stop the bleeding (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).
To treat throat obstruction (Hou Bi, 喉痹), prick the swollen area with a Bian needle (Bian Zhen, 砭针), and relief comes immediately upon bleeding (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).
To treat throat obstruction, if the condition is severe, hide a small three-edged needle inside the tip of a pen, dip medicine on the throat obstruction, and urgently prick it. Purple blood will suddenly emerge, which is effective. If the needle is not hidden, it may be difficult for the patient to cooperate with the pricking (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).
The Ten Xuanshi (Shixuan, 十宣) ten acupoints are located on the tips of the ten fingers, one fen away from the nail beds. Each finger has one point, totaling ten points on both hands, hence the name Ten Xuanshi. To treat tonsillitis, bleeding via a three-edged needle is highly effective (*Zhenjiu Dacheng*).

To treat chin swelling like a jug, throat blockage, inability to swallow water or grain, take the Ju acupoint, prick with a three-edged needle to cause slight bleeding, venting heat from all Yang organ stores. Subsequently, needle Yanggu (SI2, Yang Valley) twice for recovery (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).
For men and women suffering from throat closure with swelling and pain unable to speak, bleed Shaoshang (LU11, Lesser Shang) acupoint for immediate cure. If ineffective, gargle with Warm White Decoction (Wen Bai Tang, 温白汤); this uses heat to conduct heat away (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).
To treat throat obstruction with sudden rebellion in the hypochondrium (*Zisheng Jing*), first select the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel), then Sanli (ST36, Three Li) and Yunmen (LU2, Cloud Gate), reducing both. Also prick the tip of the little finger to bleed for immediate resolution (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).
To treat acute throat closure and winding wind, moxa Sanli (ST36, Three Li) for 27 moxa cones. Someone who suffered from throat obstruction, unable to swallow even water, was cured by moxa Sanli. Also, on the side of the swelling, prick between the outer edge of the big toe nail and its root. Regardless of gender or side, use common household needles; bleeding brings efficacy. In critical cases, pricking both big toes is especially excellent (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).
To treat cough and asthma, select Quze (PC3, Marsh Valley); bleeding leads to immediate resolution (*Puji Fang · Zhenjiu*).

Acute conjunctivitis is an acute eye disease, known in TCM as Storm Guest Heat (Baofeng Ke Re, 暴风客热), commonly called Red Eye. Treatment mainly focuses on dispersing and draining wind-heat, thus rapid pricking bloodletting methods are often used, yielding faster results. Needling Xinming 1 (located 5 fen anterior-superior to Yifeng TE17) treated 24 cases of conjunctivitis using induction techniques; after finding sour-distending sensation via twisting and lifting-thrusting, needles were retained. Results: 20 cured, 2 markedly effective, 2 improved. Bloodletting from the earlobe treated 17 cases: 15 cured in one session, 2 cured in two sessions (*Zhenjiu Yanjiu Jinzhan*).
Needling Taiyang Acupoint to Treat Hordeolum (Stye)
Needling Taiyang (EX-HN5, Temporalis) treated 35 cases. Selected the affected side, used reducing method, retained needles for 15 minutes after Deqi (arrival of Qi), squeezed out a small amount of blood upon withdrawal. 31 cases cured in one session, 2 in two sessions. Two cases with suppuration had poor efficacy and were cured after incision and drainage (*Hunan Yiyao*).
Pricking-Threading to Treat Hordeolum (Stye)
Have the patient sit and raise the affected limb, force towards the back along 1.5 cm lateral to the spine; the point where the patient's middle finger can touch is the pricking-threading point. After routine disinfection, the operator holds the skin with the left hand and uses a three-edged needle to prick-thread and bleed with the right hand. Squeeze with two fingers, wipe clean with sterile dry cotton ball, apply adhesive tape. Of 23 cases, 21 were cured in one session (*Yantai Yiyao Tongxun*).
Experience Introduction to Needling Treatment of Hordeolum (Stye)
Find bean-rash-like small red spots on the patient's back skin as needling points. Prick the right back for the left eye, and the left back for the right eye. Use a coarse needle to straight insert 1-2 fen deep, strong stimulation without retention. Upon completion, bleeding is preferred; if no blood, squeeze manually to bleed, then wipe with sterile cotton ball. Once daily. Of 43 cases, 36 cured, 5 improved, 2 ineffective (*Yiwei Yiyao*).
Acute tonsillitis belongs to excess-heat syndrome. Needling mostly uses reducing methods. Main acupoints include Hegu (LI4, Joining Stream), Jiache (ST6, Jawbone), and Shaoshang (LU11, Lesser Shang). Others include Tianzhu (BL10, Heavenly Pillar), Yuji (LU10, Fish Border), Xi Shang, Dongfeng (also called Tonsil Acupoint, below the angle of the mandible), Pingtao (5 fen above Lianquan, 1 cun lateral), Houkai (posterior 1/3 of the line connecting Jiaosun TE17 and Luxi GB19). Auricular acupuncture selects three points on the ear helix, pharynx-larynx area, or pricks the auricular back vein, or adds the tonsil reaction area and pharynx reaction area. For fever, add bloodletting from Erjian (Ear Apex, highest point of helix) or needle Shaoshang. Generally, use a three-edged needle or coarse needle to prick and bleed to drain excess heat. Most cases resolve after 1-2 treatments. One report treated 507 cases: 486 cured, 15 improved, 6 ineffective. Another report of 342 cases: 90% basically cured after 1-3 treatments. Of 114 cases needled, cure rate was 98.2%. Auricular treatment, specifically auricular back vein pricking, achieved satisfactory results within about 2 days. Needling treatment often provides immediate pain relief; post-needling body temperature and white blood cell counts drop to normal, though some rise first then fall (*Zhenjiu Yanjiu Jinzhan*).
