Fenghuan (Flaccidity due to Wind) refers to a condition where wind pathogen penetrates deeply into the body, causing flaccidity and weakness of the hands and feet. Generally, the four limbs and hundred vessels of a person will become spasmodic and tight when encountering cold, and become soft and relaxed when encountering heat. When the disease is in the Yang aspect, the Qi of the meridians flows slowly, leading to laxity of the joints; when the disease is in the Yin aspect, the Qi of the meridians flows rapidly, leading to contraction of the joints. This is the normal law of nature. However, the Spleen governs the muscles and four limbs, and the Stomach is the sea of water and grain, responsible for distributing the Qi of water and grain to nourish the whole body. If the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, the limbs lose their nourishment. Consequently, wind pathogen attacks the deficiency, entering from the Couli (pores) into the muscles, and then from the muscles into the Spleen and Stomach. How can it not lead to flaccidity and disability? Some may say that wind-dispelling formulas differ from stomach-strengthening formulas, but this depends on how flexibly the practitioner applies them. I have heard that the strength of the human body relies on the sinews and bones; the Liver governs the sinews, and the Kidney governs the bones. If the Qi of the Liver and Kidney is deficient and wind pathogen invades, there will also be symptoms of limb flaccidity and weakness. In such cases, one should first disperse the wind and then tonify, paying special attention to this approach.
