Generally, pathological phlegm can cause wheezing, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, vertigo, dizziness, mental restlessness and discomfort, fright and terror, aversion to cold, heat, pain and swelling, stuffiness and obstruction, fullness and blockage in the chest and diaphragm, gurgling sounds between the chest and hypochondria, or a specific point on the back feeling constantly cold, or numbness and insensitivity of the four limbs; all these are caused by phlegm-fluid retention.
This may be due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency failing to control Lung Metal (Earth not generating Metal), or due to interference from the Four Qi (seasonal pathogens) and Seven Emotions, leading to Qi stagnation and phlegm accumulation. Those skilled in treating phlegm do not treat phlegm directly but rather regulate Qi; when Qi flows smoothly, the body's fluids also flow smoothly with it. The method for treating phlegm lies in strengthening Spleen Earth and drying Spleen Dampness, which addresses the root cause. Any strange or rare diseases that people cannot identify should be treated as phlegm disorders and will often be effective.
This is an essential medicine for treating phlegm, capable of treating phlegm throughout the Upper, Middle, and Lower Jiao.
Citrus Reticulata White Peel (Juhong, 1 liang), Pinellia Tuber prepared (Banxia, 5 qian), Licorice Root (Gancao, 2 qian), Poria (Fuling, 5 qian).
Decoct with one and a half zhong of water and three large slices of fresh Ginger. Take orally. If the phlegm is clear and belongs to Cold syndrome, double the dosage of Banxia. For phlegm due to food stagnation, add Shenqu, Maiya, and Crataegus Fruit (Shanzha). For Damp-Phlegm with fatigue and weakness of the four limbs, add Baizhu and Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu). For Wind-Phlegm, add Arisaema Tuber (Nanxing), Bletilla Rhizome (Baifuzi), and Scutellaria Root (Huangqin). For insufficient Middle Qi, add Renshen and Baizhu. For Fire stirring Phlegm causing vertigo and mental discomfort, add Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), Huangqin, and Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian). For internal injury complicated by phlegm, add Renshen, [missing character, likely Astragalus], and Baizhu, taken with ginger juice. For severe deficiency, add Bamboo Sap (Zhuli); for Spleen deficiency, clear the Middle Qi to transform phlegm and descend Fire by adding Baizhu and Cimicifugae Rhizome (Shengma) to lift the clear Yang; for phlegm in the hypochondria, add Sinapis Albus Seed (Baijiezi) to move it; for phlegm in the four limbs, add Zhuli; for phlegm inside the skin and membranes, add Baijiezi, ginger juice, and Zhuli to guide it out; for excess Qi conditions, use Catharanthus Roseus Juice (Jingli).
Another prescription: Treats old phlegm, hot phlegm, phlegm due to food stagnation, and phlegm generated from Qi depression and stuffiness.
