Shengma Fabiao Tang (Cimicifugae Exterior-Dispersing Decoction) (i.e., Mahuang Tang, with its own modifications.) Treats Zheng Shang Han (typical Cold Damage) contracted in winter, presenting with headache, fever, aversion to cold, stiffness of the spine, floating-tight pulse, and anhidrosis (absence of sweating), indicating a Exterior Syndrome. This is pathogenic invasion of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian; diaphoresis should be induced. It is suitable for patients whose head feels as if split by an axe and body feels as if burning with fire.
Herbs: Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Guizhi (Cinnamoli Ramulus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix).
For this meridian's pathology, if there is fever, aversion to cold, headache, anhidrosis, and wheezing, add Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and remove Shengma. If there is fever, aversion to cold, and body pain, add Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), and remove Xingren. If there is aversion to cold, fever, itchy skin, and flushed face, it is because slight sweating has not occurred; remove Baizhi and Xingren, and add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shaoyao. If there is headache, fever, aversion to cold, and chest fullness/stuffiness, add Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix). If the cold pathogen is deep and severe, and no sweat occurs after taking the decoction, administer again. If no sweat occurs after two or three doses, the prognosis is poor (death). If the disease persists after sweating, administer again, adjusting the proportions of Mahuang and Shengma according to the severity of the condition.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, three slices of ginger, and two stalks of scallion white. Apply the "chui" method (crushing/grinding). Add a pinch of Jiangxi Douchi (Fermented Soybean) and decoct. Take hot to induce sweating, which is highly effective. Cover the head with a thick blanket after ingestion. Stop when the disease is cured; do not overdose, as excessive use may cause other ailments.
Shuxie Shibiao Tang (Pathogen-Expelling and Surface-Strengthening Decoction) (i.e., Guizhi Tang, with its own modifications.) Treats Zheng Shang Feng (typical wind strike) contracted in winter, presenting with headache, fever, aversion to cold, stiffness of the spine, floating-slow pulse, and spontaneous sweating, indicating an Exterior Syndrome. This is pathogenic invasion of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian; the surface should be strengthened to scatter pathogens. It is contraindicated for those without sweat.
Herbs: Guizhi (Cinnamoli Ramulus), Chishaoyao (Red Paeonia Root), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma).
If sweating does not stop, add Huangqi (Astragali Radix); if wheezing, add Chaihu and Xingren; if chest fullness/stuffiness, add Zhike and Jiegeng.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, three slices of ginger, and two jujubes. Apply the "chui" method. Add two spoonfuls of Jiaoyi (Maltose) and decoct. Take warm.
Qianghuo Chonghe Tang (Notopterygi Harmonizing Decoction) (Used to replace Guizhi Tang, Mahuang Tang, Da Qinglong Tang, Xiao Qinglong Tang, Guizhi Mahuang Ge Ban Tang, etc. This is a divine medicine for the Taiyang Meridian.) Treats sudden cold contraction during spring, summer, or autumn out of season, presenting with headache, fever, aversion to cold, stiffness of the spine, anhidrosis, and floating-tight pulse. This is pathogenic invasion of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, an Exterior Syndrome, requiring dispersal. The treatment differs from typical Winter Shang Han. This decoction treats not only sudden cold in these seasons but also Warm diseases in spring, Heat diseases in summer, and Damp diseases in autumn, and is effective for miscellaneous conditions. It is kept secret to prevent vulgar people from knowing its wonders. Modifications are listed below.
Herbs: Qianghuo (1.5 qian), Fangfeng (1 qian), Cangzhu (1.5 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (1 qian), Chuanxiong (1 qian), Baizhi (1 qian), Gancao (1 qian), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (2 qian), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian, do not exceed).
If chest fullness/stuffiness, add Zhike and Jiegeng, remove Shengdihuang. In summer, add Shigao and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) to this formula, named Shenzhu Tang. If no sweat occurs after taking this decoction, add Suye (Perillae Folium). If wheezing with aversion to cold and fever, add Xingren and Shengdihuang. If the disease persists after sweating, take again. For simultaneous sweating and purging, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), a method akin to removing firewood from under the cauldron. For non-seasonal wind strike in spring, summer, or autumn, if there is headache, aversion to cold, fever, floating-slow pulse, and spontaneous sweating, strengthen the surface: remove Cangzhu and add Baizhu. If sweating does not stop, add Huangqi, i.e., Modified Chonghe Tang. If still not stopping, use Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Guizhi and Shaoyao (1 qian each), effect like magic.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, three slices of ginger, and two jujubes. Decoct to one zhong. Apply the "chui" method. Add five spoonfuls of juice crushed from scallion white, return to the decoction and boil for one or two boils. For inducing sweat, take hot; for stopping sweat, take warm.
Chaige Jiexi Tang (Bupleurum and Kudzu Muscle-Releasing Decoction) (i.e., Gegen Tang, with its own modifications.) Treats Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian pathology, presenting with eye pain, dry nose, insomnia, headache, orbital pain, and slightly flooding pulse. Muscle-releasing is indicated; this belongs to Yangming Meridian disease. Positive Yangming Fu organ disease has separate treatments.
Herbs: Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Gan Ge (Kudzu Root), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix).
If anhidrosis and severe aversion to cold in this meridian, remove Huangqin and add Mahuang. Suitable for winter, reduce for spring, remove for summer/autumn, add Suye. If sweating and thirst in this meridian, see treatment under Rushen Baihu Tang.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, three slices of ginger, and two jujubes. Apply the "chui" method. Add one qian of Shigao powder, decoct, and take hot.

Treats Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian pathology, presenting with deafness, hypochondriac pain, alternating chills and fever, vomiting with bitter taste, and wiry-rapid pulse. This belongs to Half-Exterior Half-Interior; harmonization is indicated. This meridian (Gallbladder) has no entry/exit dynamics, has three prohibitions (no sweating, purging, or vomiting), and only Xiao Chaihu Tang is used, modified according to the disease, with no other decoctions.
Herbs: Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix).

If hypochondriac pain, add Qingpi (Tangerine Peel). If much phlegm, add Gualouren (Trichosanthis Semen) and Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus). If chills and fever resembling malaria, add Guizhi. If thirsty, add Tianhuafen and Zhimu. If teeth are dry with no saliva, add Shigao. If coughing, add Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Feicao (Boehmeriae Folium - *Note: Text says Jinfeicao, likely Fuzhuchen/Jinfeicao*). If complicated syndrome, add Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum). If subcostal fullness/stuffiness in this meridian without prior purging, it is not Jie Xiong (Chest Binding), but exterior pathogen transmitted to the chest, not yet entering the Fu organs. Though full/stuffy, it remains in the exterior; simply use Xiao Chaihu Tang plus Zhike and Jiegeng. If ineffective, use this formula combined with Xiao Xian Xiong Tang plus Zhike and Jiegeng; one dose brings relief, miraculous. Secret, not told to vulgar people. For deficiency irritability resembling Shang Han, add Zhuye (Phyllostachys Folium) and Chao Jingmi (Fried Rice). When this meridian combines with Yangming, add Gegen and Shaoyao, easy as picking up grass. For women with heat entering the Blood Chamber, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Honghua (Carthami Flos). For men with heat entering the Blood Chamber, add Shengdihuang. For elderly women with Shang Han, no exterior syndrome, heat prevailing, add Dahuang; if severe, add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas).
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, one slice of ginger, and two jujubes. Apply the "chui" method. Add three spoonfuls of fresh Aiye juice (Mugwort Leaf Juice), decoct, and take warm.
Guizhi Dahuang Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Rhubarb Decoction) (i.e., Guizhi Tang plus Dahuang, with its own modifications.) Treats Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian pathology, presenting with abdominal fullness and pain, dry throat with thirst, warm hands and feet, and sinking-forceful pulse. This is due to pathogenic heat transmitting from Yang meridians to Yin meridians.
Herbs: Guizhi (Cinnamoli Ramulus), Chishaoyao (Red Paeonia Root), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix).
If abdominal fullness without aversion to cold but with wheezing in this meridian, add Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium) and remove Gancao.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, one slice of ginger, and two jujubes. Decoct. Before taking, apply the "chui" method, add two spoonfuls of Binglang (Betel Nut) infused water, and take hot.

Herbs: Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fuling (Poria).
For Jueyin wasting-thirst, Qi rushing up to the heart, hunger without desire to eat, vomiting worms immediately after eating, abdominal pain, and solid stool, add Dahuang and a little honey to relieve. If soft fullness in the abdomen that occasionally relieves in this meridian, follow this formula and remove Gancao. If vomiting in this meridian, add Banxia and Jiangzhi. If curling up, heavy, and unceasing diarrhea, add a little Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). If body pain after diarrhea, urgently warm with Fuzi. If spontaneous diarrhea with abdominal pain, add Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) ground with ginger juice, mix and take to harmonize.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, one slice of ginger, and two jujubes. Decoct. Before taking, apply the "chui" method, add one spoonful of Chao Chen Bitu (Fired Old Wall Earth) mixed in, to borrow earth qi to assist stomach qi.
Yinchen Jiangjun Tang (Artemisia General Decoction) (i.e., Yinchentang, with its own modifications.) Treats Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian pathology, presenting with abdominal fullness, yellowing of body and eyes, difficulty in urination, solid stool, thirst, or sweating only on the head down to the neck, and heavy pulse.
Herbs: Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus).
If stool is normal, remove Dahuang and Nongpu, add Dafupi to promote urination, clearing heat is effective.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, one slice of ginger. Apply the "chui" method. Add a handful of Dengxin (Junci Medulla), decoct, and take hot.
Dao Chi San (Guide Out Redness Powder) (Note: Text describes Wuling San + Huashi/Shanzhi, with its own modifications.) Treats difficulty in urination, lower abdominal fullness, or lower Jiao heat accumulation, or excessive drinking leading to short red urine with thirst, and sinking-rapid pulse. Promoting urination is primary. However, for those who lost fluids after sweating, or Yangming patients with excessive sweating, promoting urination is contraindicated.
Herbs: Fuling (Poria), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamoli Ramulus), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huashi (Talcum), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus).
If dampness causes yellowing of body and eyes, add Yinchen. If Shui Jie Xiong (Water Binding in Chest) syndrome, add Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) and Dengxin. If difficulty in urination with head sweating, this is Yang collapse. If onset without fever but with delirium, restlessness, and spirit lacking vitality, this decoction treats it.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, one slice of ginger, twenty stems of Dengxin. Apply the "chui" method. Mix with two characters weight of salt before taking.
Liuyi Shunqi Tang (Six-Yi Qi-Smooth Decoction) (A divine medicine replacing Dachengqi Tang, Xiaochengqi Tang, Tiaoweichengqi Tang, Daxiehu Tang, Sanyichengqi Tang, Daxianxiong Tang, etc., unknown to the world. Kept secret, not told to vulgar people. Modifications listed.) This decoction treats Shang Han where heat pathogen transmits inward, resulting in solid stool, dry mouth/throat, fear of heat, delirium, throwing off clothes, maniacal behavior, macules/yellowing, Yang reversal, tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, chest/abdominal fullness/hardness, periumbilical pain, etc. All are treated, effects not fully described.
Herbs: Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix).
Tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, delirium with thirst, throwing limbs, throwing off clothes, maniacal macules/yellowing, solid stool: all belong to positive Yangming Stomach Fu disease, follow this formula. Dry mouth/throat, solid stool: belongs to Shaoyin, follow this formula. Diarrhea of pure clear water, hard/painful epigastrium with thirst: belongs to Shaoyin, follow this formula. Fear of heat, thirst, delirium, alternating cold/warm hands/feet, solid stool: Yang Reversal syndrome, belongs to Jueyin, follow this formula. Tongue curling and testicular retraction: difficult to treat, must purge urgently. Delirium with thirst, solid stool, periumbilical hard/painful: dry feces present, purge following this formula. Heat disease with unclear vision (divine water exhausted, cannot see objects): disease is critical, must purge urgently, follow this formula. "Muming liao liao" means unclear vision. "Zhuan shiqi" means defecation with dry feces, must purge following this formula. If bowel movement occurs, stop subsequent doses, do not finish the decoction. If no bowel movement, give small amounts again. If stool passes, cure. If Jie Xiong syndrome, hard/painful epigastrium, touch unbearable, dry/thirsty/delirious, solid stool: follow this formula, remove Gancao, add Gansui (Kansui Radix) and Jiegeng.
For Shang Han passing through meridians, old/weak, Qi/Blood deficient, postpartum women with purgative indications, or unresolved after purging, or exterior unresolved with urgent interior needing purging, use this decoction minus Mangxiao to purge, auspicious. Fear is that Mangxiao's nature is drying and urgent, hence this warning. Generally, for Shang Han heat transmitting inward and solidifying, observe depth of heat to prescribe. Modern mediocre doctors indiscriminately use Dahuang and Mangxiao without distinguishing urgent purging, small dosage, or mild stomach harmonizing, causing many wrongful deaths. I say Shang Han pathogens transmit differently, so treatments differ. If all three Jiaos are injured, Pi (stagnation), Man (fullness), Zao (dryness), Shi (solidity), Jian (hardness) all exist, use Dachengqi Tang: Nongpu (bitter-warm) removes stagnation, Zhishi (bitter-cold) drains fullness, Mangxiao (salty-cold) moistens dryness and softens hardness, Dahuang (bitter-cold) drains solidity and clears heat, then cure. Pathogen in Middle Jiao presents Zao, Shi, Jian, thus use Tiaoweichengqi Tang: Gancao harmonizes middle, Mangxiao moistens dryness, Dahuang drains solidity, no Zhishi/Nongpu to avoid injuring Upper Jiao primordial Qi, hence "Stomach-Harmonizing". Upper Jiao injury presents Pi and Shi, use Xiaochengqi Tang: Zhishi/Nongpu remove Pi, Dahuang drains Shi, remove Mangxiao to avoid injuring Lower Jiao Blood/Yin essence, called not uprooting the foundation. Daxiehu Tang is for when exterior is unresolved but interior is urgent, needing purging; use this to connect exterior/interior and treat gently. Also suitable for old/weak and Qi/Blood deficient. Scripture says: Which turning drug is tighter? Those with Mangxiao are tighter. Dachengqi is tightest, Xiaochengqi next, Tiaoweichengqi next, Daxiehu next. Daxiehu plus Dahuang, Xiaochaihu plus Mangxiao are turning drugs, set for mild diseases. Zhongjing also says: To cleanse Shang Han heat accumulation, use decoctions, strictly prohibit pills, know this well.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, boil three times before adding herbs, decoct to eight parts. Apply "chui" method. Before taking, mix with three spoonfuls of Iron Rust Water (Tiexiu Shui) for immediate effect, utilizing iron's heavy nature to descend heat and open knots, miraculous. This is a priceless secret; unless inherited by my descendants, how could I reveal such mysteries? Hence the warning.
Rushen Baihu Tang (God-Like White Tiger Decoction) (i.e., Baihu Tang, with its own modifications.) Treats body heat, thirst with sweating that doesn't resolve, or thirst persisting after sweating, with slightly flooding pulse.
Herbs: Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus).
If vexation, add a ball of Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia). If extreme thirst/vexation with back aversion to cold, follow this formula, remove Shanzhi, add Tianhuafen. If no thirst, do not take this medicine, it is a major taboo.
Decoction method: Use two zhong of water, one jujube, one slice of ginger. Apply "chui" method. Add ten leaves of Dan Zhuye (Light Bamboo Leaf), decoct, and take hot.
Sanhuang Shigao Tang (Three-Yellow Gypsum Decoction) This decoction treats Yang Du (Yang Toxin) with macules, body yellow like vermilion, eyes like fire, screaming and wanting to run, six pulses flooding-large, extreme dry thirst, dry nose, flushed face, yellow teeth. After passing meridians unresolved, becoming complicated syndrome, interior/exterior both hot, attempting sweating fails to reduce heat, purging follows causing frequent stool and difficulty urinating. Also treats mismanaged Warm diseases resulting in this syndrome, or after 8-9 days of sweating/purging with flooding-rapid pulse, high fever, stiffness/heaviness, wanting to treat interior but exterior unresolved, wanting to release exterior but interior urgent, hesitating to act, awaiting death. Unknowingly, heat in three Jiaos blocks collaterals, fluids/Wei-Qi do not circulate, forming this syndrome. Also treats heat in three Jiaos after sweating/purging, flooding pulse, incessant delirium, day/night panting, occasional nasal bleeding, whole body/eye yellowing, screaming wanting to run; generally use this decoction, miraculous, unrecognized by people.
Herbs: Shigao (1.5 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (each 7 qian), Shanzhi (30 fruits), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (0.5 fen), Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean) (2 he).
