After taking Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction), if thirst occurs, it belongs to Yangming disease; treat it according to the method for Yangming disease.
After taking Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction), the heat at the half-exterior should be cleared, and there should be no thirst. If thirst occurs, it indicates dryness-heat in the Stomach Fu organ, belonging to Yangming disease; treat it according to the method for Yangming disease. Removing this dryness-heat will prevent the Stomach disease from forming.
When Taiyang disease (Disease of the Bladder and Small Intestine channels) and Shaoyang disease (Disease of the Gallbladder and Sanjiao channels) combine, spontaneous diarrhea occurs; treat with Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction). If vomiting is present, treat with Huangqin Jia Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Scutellaria Decoction plus Pinellia and Fresh Ginger Decoction).
In the combination of Taiyang and Shaoyang diseases, the Qi of the Shaoyang channel becomes stagnant and overacts on Wu Earth (Stomach). The Stomach pathology leads to obstruction in the lower epigastrium, causing spontaneous diarrhea; treat with Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction). Gancao (Licorice Root) and Dazao (Jujube Fruit) tonify Spleen essence; Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) and Shaoyao (Peony Root) drain ministerial fire, preventing the loss of Spleen Yin due to diarrhea, which would otherwise lead to dry Earth transmitting into Yangming. If vomiting is present, use Huangqin Jia Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Scutellaria Decoction plus Pinellia and Fresh Ginger Decoction) to descend rebellious Stomach Qi and stop vomiting.
Huangqin (3 liang), Shaoyao (2 liang), Gancao (2 liang, honey-fried), Dazao (12 pieces).
Take these four herbs, boil in 10 dou of water, reduce to 3 sheng, remove dregs, and take 1 sheng warm. Administer twice daily and once at night. If vomiting is present, add Banxia (8 liang) and Shengjiang (3 liang).
Huangqin (3 liang), Shaoyao (2 liang), Gancao (2 liang), Dazao (12 pieces), Banxia (0.5 sheng), Shengjiang (3 liang).
Add Banxia and Shengjiang to the formula of Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction); follow the administration method of Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction) for the rest.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage) with fever, sweating does not resolve the condition. There is a sensation of fullness and hardness in the epigastrium, accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea; Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) is the primary treatment.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage) exterior syndrome, fever and sweating should lead to resolution. However, if sweating fails to resolve the condition, it is because there is an interior Yangming syndrome within. Heat originates internally and is unrelated to exterior cold. Sweating causes fluid loss, thereby increasing dryness-heat. The sensation of fullness and hardness in the heart/epigastrium is due to stagnation in both the Gallbladder and Stomach. Vomiting and diarrhea occur because Wu Earth (Stomach) is pressured by Jia Wood (Gallbladder), rendering the upper and lower orifices unable to accommodate food and fluids. Although vomiting, diarrhea, and epigastric fullness are typically symptoms of Taiyin disease, their appearance after fever and sweating indicates that this is not Taiyin but Yangming disease. In Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), and Shaoyao (Peony Root) clear Shaoyang fire; Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) purge Yangming heat; Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) descend rebellious Stomach Qi to stop vomiting.
Chaihu (8 liang), Huangqin (3 liang), Shaoyao (3 liang), Banxia (8 liang, washed), Shengjiang (5 liang), Dazao (12 pieces), Zhishi (4 pieces, honey-fried), Dahuang (2 liang).
Take these eight herbs, boil in 12 dou of water, reduce to 6 sheng, remove dregs, decoct again, and take 1 sheng warm. Administer three times daily.
