Treats chronic cough caused by Yin deficiency. Use "Qin Hua San Dong Ju Bei Pa" (Throat Lozenges of Three Winters, Citrus Peel, and Loquat Leaf), which consists of Diospyri Fructus Cum Melle (Persimmon Frost), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice), Platycodonis Radix (Platycodon), Schisandrae Fructus (Schisandra), Glehniae Radix (Glehnia Root), Folium Mori Cortex (Mulberry Bark), Stemona Radix (Stemona), Asteris Radix (Aster), Scrophulariae Radix (Scrophularia), and Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Mint), processed with refined honey into pills the size of a bullet.
* **Ophiopogonis Radix** (Ophiopogon Root, *Mai Dong*): Remove the heart. [Note: Tian Dong is also used here for its properties.]
* **Asparagi Radix** (Asparagus Root, *Tian Dong*): Fire scorching Lung dryness causes itching in the throat leading to cough; therefore, use Ophiopogon and Asparagus to nourish Yin, moisten dryness, clear Metal (Lung), and descend fire. They open and resolve phlegm without aiding fire. (3 liang each).
* **Fritillariae Bulbus** (Fritillaria Bulb, *Bei Mu*): Remove the heart. (2 liang).
* **Stemonae Radix** (Stemona Root, *Bai Bu*): Moistens dryness, clears heat, and can kill parasites. Remove the heart. (3 liang).
* **Menthae Haplocalycis Herba** (Mint, *Bo He Ye*): Pungent nature disperses heat, cool nature clears and benefits the throat. (3 liang).
* **Diospyri Fructus Cum Melle** (Persimmon Frost, *Shi Shuang*): (1 liang).
* **Glehniae Radix** (Glehnia Root, *Hua Fen*): Treating cough requires managing phlegm. Thus, Fritillaria and Persimmon Frost moisten dry phlegm in the Lungs, while Glehnia Root treats hot phlegm above the diaphragm. (2 liang).
* **Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium** (Tangerine Peel, *Ju Hong*): (1 liang).
* **Eriobotryae Folium** (Loquat Leaf, *Pi Pa Ye*): Honey-fried. (2 liang).
* **Asteris Radix** (Aster Root, *Zi Wan*): Treating phlegm prioritizes regulating Qi. These two herbs (referring to Zi Wan and Bai Bu) descend Qi; when Qi descends, fire clears, phlegm flows smoothly, and cough stops. (1 liang).
* **Scrophulariae Radix** (Scrophularia Root, *Yuan Shen*): Treats misty Qi in the chest and rootless fire. (1 liang).
* **Schisandrae Fructus** (Schisandra Berry, *Wu Wei Zi*): Chronic cough consumes Qi; use Schisandra, an astringent herb, honey-fried. (1 liang).
* **Platycodonis Radix** (Platycodon Root, *Jie Geng*): (1 liang).
* **Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma** (Licorice Root, *Gan Cao*): Cough belongs to the Upper Jiao, so sweet herbs are used. Platycodon acts as a boat/pilot to guide the medicine. Honey-fried. (1 liang).
Sixteen ingredients in total. Processed with refined honey into pills the size of a bullet. Hold in the mouth and dissolve slowly at any time; taking it before bed is better. It can also be taken as an electuary.
This is a formula that moistens dryness, clears Metal (Lung), descends Qi, eliminates phlegm, and has astringent properties. Formulated by Zhong Chun, it produces immediate results for persistent cough due to Yin deficiency. I believe many people suffer from Yin deficiency. For example, after the exterior pathogen of a wind-cold cough has resolved but the cough persists for a long time, this formula is very effective.
Treats Heart injury caused by worry and overthinking. (The Heart is the Sovereign; if the Heart is injured, Spirit departs, and life ends instantly. Any mention of Heart disease usually refers to the Pericardium suffering.) When Heart Blood is insufficient, blood deficiency generates internal fire, fire generates phlegm, and phlegm disturbs the Pericardium, causing palpitations and restless sleep. *Zheng Tong* (Palpitations/Anxiety) refers to a feeling of terror and unease in the heart, confusion, and restlessness, as if being chased by someone. Empty irritability and insomnia occur because Kidney Water does not ascend to interact with the Heart, leaving Heart Fire uncontrolled, which is also due to deficient Heart Blood. Zhong Chun stated: Insomnia should be treated primarily by clearing Heart Fire. Constipation occurs because the Heart governs Blood; Heart injury leads to dry Blood and difficult defecation. Short, red urine occurs because the Heart and Small Intestine are interior-exterior related, and heat transfers from the Zang to the Fu. Dry throat and thirst occur because body fluids are scorched. Mouth and tongue ulcers occur due to Heart Fire flaring upward.
* **Ginseng Radix** (Ginseng Root, *Ren Shen*): Tonifies Heart Qi. (5 qian; increase dosage for deficiency).
* **Angelicae Sinensis Radix** (Dong Quai Root, *Dang Gui*): Nourishes Heart Blood. (1 liang).
* **Ziziphi Spinosae Semen** (Jujube Seed, *Zao Ren*): Stir-fried. (4 liang).
* **Schisandrae Fructus** (Schisandra Berry, *Wu Wei Zi*): Astringes Heart fluid.
* **Ophiopogonis Radix** (Ophiopogon Root, *Mai Dong*): Benefits Heart Jin (fluids). (2 liang).
* **Asparagi Radix** (Asparagus Root, *Tian Dong*): (2 liang).
* **Scrophulariae Radix** (Scrophularia Root, *Yuan Shen*): Strengthens Kidney Water. (1 liang).
* **Platycodonis Radix** (Platycodon Root, *Jie Geng*): Guides the other herbs to remain in the Upper Jiao, preventing them from descending too quickly. (5 qian).
These thirteen ingredients are processed with refined honey into pills the size of a bullet. Add **Cinnabar** (Zhu Sha, 1.5 liang) to protect the Heart, grind finely, and use as a coating. Another prescription uses **Rhizoma Coptidis** (Huang Lian); add it if Heart Fire is severe. Take far after meals and before bedtime, dissolved in Bamboo Leaf and Nymphicae Nelumbinis Placenta & Juncus Effusus Decoction or Longan Decoction. Holding in the mouth and dissolving is better.
This is a formula that generates fluids, nourishes Blood, clears heat, calms the Spirit, and anchors the Heart. It is suitable for those who labor with their minds. In the past, Chan Master Zhigong chanted scriptures day and night... [Text fragment missing] ... To resolve phlegm, one may use Bamboo Sap, Fritillaria, Hyacinth Bean, Phelodendron Bark, and Calculus Bovis; to calm fright, one may use Gold Foil and Haematitum. All can be selected according to symptoms. I note: The Classics state that the Heart is the great master of the five Zang and six Fu organs, commanding the Hun and Po, and encompassing Zhi and Yi. Therefore, worry moving in the Heart causes the Lung to respond; thinking moving in the Heart causes the Spleen to respond; anger moving in the Heart causes the Liver to respond; fear moving in the Heart causes the Kidney to respond. Although the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Fear, Sadness, Thought, Fright) are distributed among the five Zang organs, they all originate from the Heart. The Classics say: The Heart governs the vessels of the whole body. It also says: The Heart generates Blood; thus, the Heart is the source of Blood. If the Heart is not overworked, its Blood increases daily. Only through excessive mental labor is Heart Blood consumed daily. Consequently, the Zang and Fu lose moisture, sinews and vessels lose nourishment, Ying Qi becomes deficient, and pathogenic heat arises. This is what is meant by "Yin deficiency generating internal heat." If Kidney Water is not deficient, it can still ascend to control the Heart, and Heart Fire will not scorch the Lung to cause harm. If deficient, Heart Fire is uncontrolled, becomes hyperactive, attacks Metal (Lung), causing cough and asthma, consuming Lung Yin, leading to emaciation, and death may follow immediately. This condition is common among those who are frustrated. Therefore, treating this condition must prioritize strengthening Water (Kidney), while also paying attention to Middle Qi (Spleen/Stomach). Generally, for patients with Xu Lao (Consumptive Disease), regardless of which organ is injured, if there is no internal heat with bone-steaming fever, it is not called Xu Lao; if there is no poor appetite, diarrhea, and muscle wasting, death is not imminent. Therefore, Sun Simiao said tonifying the Spleen is inferior to tonifying the Kidney, and Scholar Xu said tonifying the Kidney is inferior to tonifying the Spleen. These two masters deeply understood that the Spleen and Kidney are the foundation of human life. Thus, for all diseases, one should regulate the Spleen and Kidney, not just for Xu Lao.
