夜啼有二∶曰脾寒，曰心热也。夜属阴，阴胜则脾脏之寒愈盛；脾为至阴，喜温而恶寒，寒
则腹中作痛。故曲腰而啼，其候面青白，手腹俱冷，不思乳食是也，亦曰胎寒，用钩藤散。
若见灯愈啼者，心热也，心属火，见灯则烦热内生，两阳相搏，故仰身而啼，其候面赤，手
腹俱缓，口中气热是也，用导赤散。若面色白，黑睛少，属肾气不足，至夜阴虚而啼也，宜
用六味丸。若兼泄泻不乳，脾肾虚弱也，用六神散。若兼吐泻少食，脾胃虚寒也，用六君、
炮木香。大便不化，食少腹胀，脾气虚弱也，用异功散。心血不足者，秘旨安神丸。木火相
搏者，柴胡栀子散。肝血不足者，地黄丸。大抵此症，或因吐泻内亡津液，或禀赋肾阴不足
，不能滋养肝木，或乳母恚怒肝木侮金，当用六君子汤，补脾土，以生肺金。地黄丸，壮肾
水，以滋肝木。若乳母郁闷而致者，用加味归脾汤。乳母暴怒者，加味小柴胡汤。乳母心肝
热搏，柴胡栀子散。仍宜参客忤惊啼览之。
治验
一小儿发热夜啼，乳食不进，昏迷抽搐，痰盛口噤，此脾肺气虚，风木所乘，痰食积于胸腹
也。先用大安丸，后用六君、钩藤钩，而痊。
一小儿三岁面白夜啼，小便青而数。此肺肾虚弱，朝用补中益气汤加肉桂一分，夕用地黄丸
而愈。大凡小儿面色青黑，睛少，或解颅足热者，出痘多在肾经，预用地黄丸补肾气，多得
一小儿二岁，夜啼，面色赤，黑睛色淡，小便频赤，朝用补中益气汤加山药、五味，夕用地
龙齿散 治拘哭肚痛惊热。
龙齿 蝉蜕 钩藤钩 羌活 茯苓（各等分）
上为末，每服一钱，水煎服。
碧云散 治浑身壮热夜啼。
柏叶（二分） 南星 僵蚕 全蝎 郁金 雄黄（各一钱）
上为末，每服一字，用薄荷汤入蜜调服。
六神散 治腹痛，面色青，口中气冷，及四肢俱冷，曲腰而啼，或泄泻不乳。
人参 山药 白术（各五钱） 甘草（炒。二钱） 茯苓 扁豆（炒。各一两）
上为末，每服二钱，姜二斤，枣水煎。一方有芍药、当归、人参各二钱五分，甘草、桔梗、
愚按∶前症悉属脾土虚寒，元气下陷。本方更加柴胡、升麻，升提元气，而补脾土为善。
神绿散
全蝎（去足翅不拘多少） 青薄荷（焙干）
上为末，每服半钱，薄荷汤调下。
无择灯花散 治心燥夜啼。
灯花（三二颗）
上研细，用灯草煎汤，调涂口中，乳汁送下，日三服。一法用灯花涂乳上，令儿吮之，无灯
花用灯草烧灰，辰砂少许，亦妙。或用灯花七枚、硼砂一字、辰砂少许，蜜调涂唇上立安。
安神散 治夜啼。
蝉蜕（四十九枚，只用后半段，截去前半段并去足翅）
上为末，分四服，用钩藤钩汤调下。
人参黄连散 治心经蕴热夜啼。
人参（二钱五分） 黄连（一钱五分，炒 炙甘草五分） 竹叶（二十片）
上姜水煎服。
太乙丹 治睡惊夜啼，青粪。
桔梗（一两五钱） 藿香叶（五钱） 川芎（二钱五分） 白芷（三钱） 白扁豆（五钱，炒）
上为末，炼蜜丸，樱桃大，辰砂、麝香为衣，每服半丸，薄荷汤送下。粪色青，枣汤下。夜
啼，灯心、钩藤汤下，加白术、茯苓、白芍药尤妙。
地黄散 治身热口干，咳嗽心烦。
生地黄（五钱） 麦门冬（去心，七钱） 杏仁（炮，去皮尖） 款冬花 陈皮（各三钱） 甘草（炙，二钱半）

夜啼有两种：一种是脾寒，一种是心热。夜晚属于阴，阴气盛则脾脏的寒气更重；脾是至阴之脏，喜欢温暖而厌恶寒冷，受寒则腹部疼痛。所以孩子弯腰啼哭，表现为面色青白，手脚和腹部都冷，不想吃奶，这就是脾寒证，也称为胎寒，用钩藤散治疗。如果见到灯光后啼哭更厉害，这是心热证，心属火，见到灯光则烦热内生，两阳相搏，所以孩子仰身啼哭，表现为面色红赤，手脚和腹部松软无力，口中呼出热气，这是心热证，用导赤散治疗。如果面色苍白，黑眼球部分少，属于肾气不足，到了夜间阴虚而啼哭，适宜用六味丸。如果兼有腹泻、不吃奶，是脾肾虚弱，用六神散。如果兼有呕吐、腹泻、食欲减退，是脾胃虚寒，用六君子汤加炮木香。大便不消化，吃得少且腹胀，是脾气虚弱，用异功散。心血不足的，用秘旨安神丸。木火相搏的，用柴胡栀子散。肝血不足的，用地黄丸。大抵这类病症，有的因为吐泻导致体内津液亏损，有的因为先天禀赋肾阴不足，不能滋养肝木，有的因为乳母愤怒导致肝木侮金，应当用六君子汤补脾土以生肺金，用地黄丸壮肾水以滋肝木。如果是乳母郁闷导致的，用加味归脾汤。乳母暴怒的，用加味小柴胡汤。乳母心肝热盛的，用柴胡栀子散。仍宜参考“客忤惊啼”篇的内容进行诊治。
治验案例：
一个小孩发热夜啼，吃奶进食困难，昏迷抽搐，痰多口噤，这是脾肺气虚，风木乘虚而入，痰食积滞于胸腹所致。先用大安丸，后用六君子汤加钩藤钩，痊愈。
一个三岁小孩面色白、夜间啼哭，小便颜色青且频数。这是肺肾虚弱，早晨服用补中益气汤加一分肉桂，晚上服用地黄丸，痊愈。大凡小儿面色青黑，黑眼球部分少，或者囟门未闭（解颅）、足部发热的，出痘疮多在肾经，预先用地黄丸补肾气，大多能……（原文此处似有缺漏或语意未尽，按文意理解为预后较好或预防得当）。
一个两岁小孩，夜间啼哭，面色红赤，黑眼球颜色淡，小便频数且红赤，早晨服用补中益气汤加山药、五味子，晚上服用龙齿散治疗拘急、哭闹、肚痛、惊热。
龙齿散方：龙齿、蝉蜕、钩藤钩、羌活、茯苓（各等分）。以上研为末，每次服一钱，用水煎服。
碧云散方：治疗浑身高热、夜间啼哭。侧柏叶（二分）、南星、僵蚕、全蝎、郁金、雄黄（各一钱）。以上研为末，每次服一字，用薄荷汤调入蜂蜜服用。
六神散方：治疗腹痛，面色青，口中气冷，及四肢俱冷，弯腰啼哭，或腹泻不吃奶。人参、山药、白术（各五钱）、甘草（炒，二钱）、茯苓、扁豆（炒，各一两）。以上研为末，每次服二钱，用生姜二片、大枣水煎服。另一版本方中有芍药、当归、人参各二钱五分，甘草、桔梗……（原文此处中断）。
愚按：前面的病症都属于脾土虚寒，元气下陷。本方再加柴胡、升麻，升提元气，并补脾土为好。
神绿散方：全蝎（去足翅，数量不限）、青薄荷（焙干）。以上研为末，每次服半钱，用薄荷汤调下。
无择灯花散方：治疗心躁夜间啼哭。灯花（二三颗）。以上研细，用灯草煎汤，调涂口中，乳汁送下，每日三次服用。另一种方法是用灯花涂在乳头上，让孩子吮吸，如果没有灯花，可用灯草烧灰，加少许辰砂，也很好。或者用灯花七枚、硼砂一字、少许辰砂，用蜜调匀涂在嘴唇上，立刻安静。
安神散方：治疗夜啼。蝉蜕（四十九枚，只用后半段，截去前半段并去掉足翅）。以上研为末，分四次服用，用钩藤钩汤调下。
人参黄连散方：治疗心经蕴热引起的夜啼。人参（二钱五分）、黄连（一钱五分，炒）、炙甘草（五分）、竹叶（二十片）。以上用姜水煎服。
太乙丹方：治疗睡中惊悸、夜间啼哭、大便色青。桔梗（一两五钱）、藿香叶（五钱）、川芎（二钱五分）、白芷（三钱）、白扁豆（五钱，炒）。以上研为末，炼蜜制成梧桐子大小的丸药，用辰砂、麝香为衣，每次服半丸，用薄荷汤送下。如果粪便颜色青，用枣汤送下。治疗夜啼，用灯心、钩藤汤送下，加白术、茯苓、白芍药尤其好。
地黄散方：治疗身体发热、口干、咳嗽、心烦。生地黄（五钱）、麦门冬（去心，七钱）、杏仁（炮制，去皮尖）、款冬花、陈皮（各三钱）、甘草（炙，二钱半）。以上研为末，每次服二三钱，用水煎温服。

Night crying has two types: one is Spleen Cold, the other is Heart Heat. Night belongs to Yin; when Yin is excessive, the coldness of the Spleen organ becomes more severe. The Spleen is a Zhi Yin (Extreme Yin) organ, which prefers warmth and dislikes cold. Cold causes pain in the abdomen. Therefore, the child cries with a curved waist. The signs are a bluish-white complexion, cold hands and abdomen, and lack of appetite for milk. This is also called Fetal Cold, treated with Gouteng San (Uncaria Decoction). If crying worsens upon seeing a lamp, it is Heart Heat. The Heart belongs to Fire; seeing a lamp generates internal irritability and heat. The interaction of two Yangs causes the child to cry while lying on their back. The signs are a red complexion, relaxed hands and abdomen, and hot breath from the mouth. This is treated with Daochi San (Guide Out Red Powder). If the complexion is pale and the black part of the pupil is small, it indicates insufficient Kidney Qi. Crying at night due to Yin deficiency should be treated with Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). If accompanied by diarrhea and refusal to nurse, it is Spleen and Kidney weakness, treated with Liushen San (Six-God Powder). If accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, and poor appetite, it is Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold, treated with Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) plus Paomuxiang (Roasted Aucklandiae Radix). If stool is undigested, appetite is low, and the abdomen is distended, it is Spleen Qi deficiency, treated with Yigong San (Extraordinary Merit Powder). For Heart Blood deficiency, use Mizhi Anshen Wan (Secret Instruction Calming Spirit Pill). For Wood-Fire conflict, use Chaihu Zhizi San (Bupleurum and Gardenia Powder). For Liver Blood deficiency, use Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill). Generally, this condition may arise from fluid loss due to vomiting and diarrhea, congenital insufficiency of Kidney Yin failing to nourish Liver Wood, or maternal anger causing Liver Wood to insult Lung Metal. In such cases, use Liujunzi Tang to tonify Spleen Earth to generate Lung Metal, and Dihuang Wan to strengthen Kidney Water to nourish Liver Wood. If caused by maternal depression, use Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Return to the Spleen Decoction). If caused by maternal sudden anger, use Jiawei Xiaochaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction). If the mother has Heart-Liver heat conflict, use Chaihu Zhizi San. One should also refer to the section on Ke Wu Jing Ti (Startle Crying due to External Intrusion) for reference.
Clinical Cases:
A child suffered from fever, night crying, refusal to nurse, coma, convulsions, profuse phlegm, and locked jaw. This was due to Spleen and Lung Qi deficiency, with Wind-Wood overacting, and phlegm-food accumulation in the chest and abdomen. First, Da'an Wan (Great Peace Pill) was used, followed by Liujunzi Tang with Goutenggou (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis), resulting in recovery.
A three-year-old child had a white complexion, night crying, and frequent, bluish urine. This indicated Lung and Kidney weakness. Morning administration of Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) plus Rougui (Cinnamon Bark, 1 fen) and evening administration of Dihuang Wan led to recovery. Generally, if a child has a bluish-black complexion, small pupils, open fontanelle (Jiechu), or hot feet, measles/rubella pathology often involves the Kidney meridian. Preemptively using Dihuang Wan to tonify Kidney Qi usually yields good results.
A two-year-old child cried at night with a red complexion, pale black pupils, and frequent, reddish urine. Morning administration of Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) and Wuwei (Schisandrae Fructus), and evening administration of Longchi San (Dragon Bone Powder) treated the spasms, crying, abdominal pain, and startle-heat.
Longchi San Formula: Treats spasms, crying, abdominal pain, and startle-heat.
Longchi (Dragon Bone), Chanui (Cicada Slough), Goutenggou (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fuling (Poria) in equal parts.
Grind into powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct in water and administer.
Bi Yun San Formula: Treats high fever all over the body and night crying.
Baiye (Platycladi Cacumen, 2 fen), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Quanxie (Scorpio), Yujin (Curcumae Radix), Xionghuang (Realgar) each 1 qian.
Grind into powder. Take 1 zi per dose, mix with honey and mint water for administration.
Liushen San Formula: Treats abdominal pain, bluish complexion, cold breath, cold limbs, crying with curved waist, or diarrhea with refusal to nurse.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 5 qian; Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) 2 qian; Fuling (Poria), Bian Dou (Lablab Seed, roasted) each 1 liang.
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct with 2 slices of fresh ginger and dates in water. Another version includes Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Renshen each 2.5 qian, Gancao and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) ... [Text incomplete].
Commentary: The aforementioned conditions all belong to Spleen Earth deficiency-cold and sinking of Yuan Qi. Adding Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) to this formula to raise Yuan Qi and tonify Spleen Earth is preferable.
Shenlv San Formula:
Quanxie (Scorpio, legs and wings removed, quantity as needed), Qingbohe (Mentha Haplocalyx, dried by roasting).
Grind into powder. Take half a qian per dose, take down with mint water.
Wuze Denghua San Formula: Treats heart irritability and night crying.
Denghua (Lamp wick flower, 2-3 pieces).
Grind finely. Decoct Dengcao (Junci Medulla) in water, apply to the mouth, and wash down with breast milk. Administer three times daily. Alternatively, apply Denghua to the nipple for the infant to suck. If no Denghua is available, burn Dengcao to ash and add a little Chen Sha (Cinnabar), which is also excellent. Or use seven Denghua pieces, one zi of Pengsha (Borax), and a little Chen Sha, mix with honey and apply to the lips for immediate calm.
Anshen San Formula: Treats night crying.
Chanui (Cicada Slough, 49 pieces, use only the posterior half, cut off the anterior half and remove legs/wings).
Grind into powder. Divide into four doses, take down with Goutenggou decoction.
Renshen Huanglian San Formula: Treats night crying due to latent heat in the Heart meridian.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 2.5 qian, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, roasted) 1.5 qian, Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root) 0.5 fen, Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) 20 leaves.
Decoct in water with ginger and administer.
Taiyi Dan Formula: Treats sleep startle, night crying, and green stools.
Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) 1.5 liang, Huoxiangye (Agastaches Herba) 5 qian, Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 2.5 qian, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) 3 qian, Baibian dou (Lablab Seed, roasted) 5 qian.
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey the size of a cherry, coat with Chen Sha (Cinnabar) and Shexiang (Moschus). Take half a pill per dose, send down with mint water. If stool is green, send down with jujube water. For night crying, send down with Dengxin (Junci Medulla) and Gouteng decoction; adding Baizhu, Fuling, and Baishaoyao is especially good.
Dihuang San Formula: Treats body heat, dry mouth, cough, and vexation.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens) 5 qian, Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, core removed) 7 qian, Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, processed, skin and tip removed), Kuandonghua (Farfarae Flos), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) each 3 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root, prepared) 2.5 qian.
Grind into powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, decoct in water and take warm.
