Mr. Chen Wensu said: When a patient with smallpox presents with thick and sticky nasal discharge and saliva, fever, dry nose, normal stool, and yellow-red urine, Ren Shen Qing Ge San (Ginseng Clear Diaphragm Decoction) should be used. If there is phlegm accumulation with high fever, chest oppression and irritability, hard stool, and wheezing when lying down, Qian Hu Zhi Ke San (Peucedanum and Aurantium Decoction) should be used. I believe that if the aforementioned symptoms are due to excess heat in the Lung and Stomach, Qi stagnation with phlegm obstruction, or constipation with red-dry urine, irritability, thirst, and desire for cold drinks, Ren Shen Qing Ge San is suitable to release the exterior pathogenic factors and unblock internal heat, preventing pathogenic factors from stagnating. If toxins accumulate in the Zang-Fu organs with constipation, Qian Hu Zhi Ke San should be used to drain the interior and harmonize Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, allowing pathogens to dissipate naturally. If there is cough with phlegm, thick sticky nasal discharge and saliva, and nasal congestion, Xing Xing San (Xingxing Powder) or Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Drink) should be used to disperse exterior pathogens, thereby preserving Yuan Qi (Primal Qi), making the smallpox mild and easy to heal.
A child with smallpox presented with thick sticky nasal discharge and saliva, and nasal congestion. This was caused by Wind pathogen injuring the Lung. After one dose of Shen Su San (Ginseng and Perilla Powder), the condition improved slightly; after using Xing Xing San, he recovered.
A child with bright red smallpox, high fever, excessive phlegm, irritability, and desire for cold drinks had excess heat in the Spleen and Lung. Ren Shen Qing Ge San rapidly reduced the fever; then Celery Juice was used for scabbing.
A child with smallpox presented with thirst and desire for cold drinks, and difficult expectoration of phlegm-saliva. This was caused by Heat-Toxin in the Upper Jiao. My late father used one dose each of Ren Shen Qing Ge San and Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction); the fever subsided and phlegm cleared. Then Si Sheng San (Four Holy Powders) was used until pustules filled and penetrated; Can Si Sheng San (Ginseng Four Holy Powders) was used for fluid return and scab shedding.
A child with thick sticky nasal discharge and saliva, and black stools had Heat-Toxin in the Stomach Meridian. My late father used Sheng Ji Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Shengji Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) and Celery Juice for recovery.
After a child's smallpox healed, he had little nasal discharge/saliva, dry mouth, and abdominal distension after drinking soup. This was deficiency-heat of Stomach Qi with insufficient Jin Ye (Body Fluids). First, two doses of Ren Shen Bai Zhu San (Ginseng and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) were used, followed by Wu Wei Yi Gong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) for cure; then Can Si Sheng San and Can Nei Tuo San (Ginseng Internal Support Powder) were used for full recovery.
A child with thick sticky nasal discharge and saliva, phlegm-wheezing, thirst, and difficult defecation had Heat-Toxin accumulating internally. One dose of Qian Hu Zhi Ke San rapidly relieved all symptoms; then two doses of Ji Sheng Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Jisheng Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) cured him.
Qian Hu Zhi Ke San treats thick sticky nasal discharge and saliva, phlegm accumulation with high fever, chest oppression, hard stool, and wheezing when lying down.
Ingredients: Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Cord), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, fried), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried). Each in equal parts.
Dosage: Take 3 qian per dose, decocted in water. Do not use if the body temperature is normal, pulse is faint, and diarrhea occurs.
Note: If there is Lung excess and Stomach heat, Qi stagnation with phlegm obstruction, constipation, red-dry urine, irritability, thirst for cold drinks, and rapid pulse, this formula is suitable. It releases exterior pathogens and unblocks the Five Viscera and Six Bowels, preventing pathogenic stagnation, making smallpox mild and easy to heal.
Zi Cao Si Sheng San treats delayed eruption or inverted scabbing of smallpox, or red-dry urine with fever.
Ingredients: Zi Cao (Arnebiae Radix seu Lithospermi Radix), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, fried), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, fried). Each in equal parts.
Dosage: Take 2-3 qian per dose, decocted in water. Add Kuan Dong Hua (Flos Farfarae) and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) in equal parts, named Xian Sheng San (Immortal Holy Powder).
Shen Su Yin treats seasonal Qi injury by Wind, fever with aversion to cold, and cough. For uncertain diagnosis of smallpox/rash, this medicine is very safe.
Ingredients: Qian Hu, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Zi Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Zhi Ke, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gan Cao (honey-fried), Jie Geng. Qian Hu, Ren Shen, Zi Su Ye, Gan Ge, Ban Xia, Fu Ling are each 3 fen; Zhi Ke, Chen Pi, Gan Cao, Jie Geng are each 2 fen.
Dosage: Decoct in water and take orally.
