The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: The eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the five zang organs and six fu organs, and they are constantly nourished by Ying Qi (Nutritive Energy), Wei Qi (Defensive Energy), Hun (Ethereal Soul), and Shen (Spirit). It further states that all meridians belong to the eyes. The eyes can see only when nourished by blood; the essence of the five zang organs and six fu organs all ascend to the eyes to form visual function. Therefore, the sclera (white part of the eye) belongs to the Lung, the cornea and iris (black part of the eye) belong to the Liver, the pupil belongs to the Kidney, the upper and lower eyelids belong to the Spleen, the two canthi (corners of the eyes) belong to the Heart, and the inner canthus also belongs to the Bladder. The five zang organs correspond to five colors, each having its specific domain: The Heart governs red; a deep red indicates Excess Heat in the Heart, treated with Dao Chi San (Guide Out the Red Powder); a slight red indicates Deficient Heat in the Heart, treated with Sheng Xi San (Fresh Rhinoceros Horn Powder). The Liver governs green/blue; a deep green/blue indicates Liver Heat, treated with Xie Qing Wan (Drain the Green Pill); a pale green/blue indicates Liver Deficiency, treated with Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill). The Spleen governs yellow; a deep yellow indicates Spleen Heat, treated with Xie Huang San (Drain the Yellow Powder); a pale yellow indicates Spleen Deficiency, treated with Yi Gong San (Yi Gong Powder). If the eyes lack luster and the sclera is prominent while the cornea is small, it indicates insufficiency of both the Liver and Kidney, treated with Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) plus Lu Rong (Deer Antler). Clear vision during the day but blurred or absent vision at night is due to weak congenital Yang Qi; when Yin Qi dominates at night, Yang Qi becomes even weaker, causing inability to see, treated with Chong He Yang Wei Tang (Harmonize and Nourish Stomach Decoction). Any red vessels and pterygium/membranes developing from top to bottom belong to the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian, treated with Dong Yuan Xuan Qi Tang (Dong Yuan's Select Extraordinary Decoction); those developing from bottom to top belong to the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian, treated with Ju Fang Liu Qi Yin (Bureau Formula Flowing Qi Drink). Generally, membranes arise from internal accumulation of Wind-Heat. When the pathogenic factor is unsettled, it is called Re Yi (Heat Membrane), floating externally; when settled, it is called Bing Yi (Ice Membrane), sinking internally; when deeply entrenched, it is called Xian Yi (Sunken Membrane), requiring ascending and dispersing methods assisted by membrane-dispelling herbs. If black-and-white membranes appear under the upper eyelid, it belongs to Taiyang Cold-Water syndrome; those developing from outside to inside belong to Shaoyang Wind-Heat syndrome; those developing from bottom to top in green color belong to the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian and combined Lung-Kidney disease. Gan Eye Syndrome (Malnutrition Eye Disease) occurs due to Liver Fire and Damp-Heat rushing upward, coupled with Spleen Qi deficiency failing to raise clear Qi, leading to white membranes, closed eyelids, sticky discharge like paste, and eventually pus flow damaging the eyes, treated with Yi Qi Cong Ming Tang (Boost Qi and Brighten Eyes Decoction), Fu Ling Xie Shi Tang (Poria Draining Dampness Decoction), and Si Wei Fei Er Wan (Four-Ingredient Fattening Child Pill). Eyes unable to open due to irregular breastfeeding/diet or excessive intake of cold-cooling medicines causing Yang Qi to sink and fail to rise, are treated with Chai Hu Fu Sheng Tang (Bupleurum Reviving Life Decoction). If stomach Qi is deficient causing eyelid weakness preventing opening, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) is used. Sudden redness, swelling, and pain indicate blazing Liver Fire, treated with Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentian Draining Liver Decoction). Tearing and photophobia indicate accumulated Heat in the Liver and Heart, treated with Sheng Xi San (Fresh Rhinoceros Horn Powder). Cases of Deficient Heat in Liver and Kidney are treated with Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill). Marginal blepharitis with ulceration indicates accumulated Heat in the diaphragm, treated with Qing Wei San (Clear Stomach Powder). Intermittent itching indicates pus erosion and parasites, treated with Zi Su Gao (Perilla Ointment) for application. Eyelid spasms indicate Wind-Heat in the Liver Meridian, treated with Chai Hu Qing Gan San (Bupleurum Clearing Liver Powder). Neonatal jaundice with high fever, constipation, anorexia, flushed face, and closed eyes results from maternal heat toxins contracted in utero; the infant takes Xie Huang San (Drain the Yellow Powder), and the mother takes Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill). If the nursing mother has accumulated heat from rich food causing infant jaundice, the mother takes Qing Wei San (Clear Stomach Powder). Jaundice of limbs, face, nails, and urine resembling dust water is difficult to treat. Post-varicella residual toxins invading the eyes indicate Liver-Kidney Deficiency, treated with Zi Yin Shen Qi Wan (Nourish Yin Kidney Qi Pill). These conditions often require treating the mother while regulating the child. For further details, refer to *Yuan Ji Qi Wei*.
Clinical Cases:
A fourteen-year-old girl, after anger, first experienced amenorrhea, alternating chills and fever, and hypochondriac pain, followed by green-blue membranes growing in both eyes from outside to inside. I stated: Alternating chills, fever, and hypochondriac pain are symptoms of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Membranes starting from the outer canthus are symptoms of the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. The left Guan pulse was wiry and rapid, rough upon pressure, indicating Liver wind-heat with blood stasis. I prescribed Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) plus Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) and Long Dan Cao (Gentian Root). After four doses, chills, fever, and pain subsided significantly. Then Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) was used, and the membranes disappeared after over a month.
A fifteen-year-old boy had white membranes in both eyes, skin lesions resembling scabies on the abdomen and body, afternoon fever, dry mouth, and emaciation. This was Liver Gan Syndrome. Liu Wei Fei Er Wan (Six-Ingredient Fattening Child Pill) cured him. Later, penile itching, cloudy white urine, and worsening skin lesions resembling leprosy occurred. Da Lu Hui Si Wei Fei Er Wan (Large Aloe Four-Ingredient Fattening Child Pill) gradually healed the symptoms, followed by Da Wu Yi Tang (Large Wormwood Decoction) for complete recovery.
A boy with prominent sclera, phlegm, and convulsions was first treated with Yi Qing Wan (Suppress Green Pill); phlegm and convulsions stopped after four doses. Subsequently, Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) was used, and after about a year, the cornea became more prominent.

A boy with swollen eyelids, cough, nausea, and cloudy urine had Spleen Gan and food stagnation. Wu Wei Yi Gong San (Five-Ingredient Yi Gong Powder) as main formula with Si Wei Fei Er Wan (Four-Ingredient Fattening Child Pill) cured him. Later, dietary indiscretion caused night blindness. I advised Spleen-Stomach tonification, but he refused and took harsh purgatives, developing Wind syndrome and dying.
A boy had red eyes and convulsions after sweating from fever-releasing drugs. His mother had chronic Liver Fire. Yi Gong San (Yi Gong Powder) plus Chai Hu (Bupleurum) and Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga) was taken by both mother and son, improving slightly.
