The eyes are the orifices of the Liver. The Liver and Gallbladder belong to the Wind-Wood meridians and also involve Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo). The Liver stores Blood; when Blood is insufficient, internal Wind and Fire arise, causing the eyeballs to move. The Classics state: "Bending, straightening, shaking, and moving are manifestations of Wind." It is appropriate to use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish Blood, and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) to clear the Liver. When Yin-Blood is internally nourished, deficient Wind will naturally subside. If the eye disease is due to dryness of Blood in the Liver meridian, Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) should be used to nourish its source. If Lung Metal overacts on Liver Wood, Xiebai San (Drain White Powder) should be used to pacify the pathogenic factor of Lung Metal. If the eye sockets twitch, this indicates Liver Wood encroaching upon Spleen Earth; Baolong Wan (Embrace Dragon Pill) should be used. If after recovery there is palpitation and insomnia, or convulsions with teeth grinding and eyeball movement during sleep, this is because Blood deficiency fails to nourish the sinews and vessels; Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) or Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) added with Fuling (Poria) and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) should be used. Generally, excess refers to the fullness of pathogenic factors, while insufficiency refers to the deficiency of True Qi. In cases where Qi appears excessive, it should be diagnosed as insufficient. Moreover, since this syndrome involves both Liver and Spleen, it is often a precursor to Slow Convulsion (Man Jing); thus, careful examination is essential.
Case Record 1
A three-year-old child suffered from convulsions and fever due to fright. After long-term administration of Baolong Wan and other medicines, the complexion was alternately red and cyanotic. I stated: Initially, there were excess pathogens in the Liver, so the aforementioned medicines were appropriate. Now, with a cyanotic-red complexion, it indicates that deficient heat from the Liver meridian has transmitted to the Heart. Consequently, Liuwei Wan was used to nourish the Liver and Kidney, assisted by Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), and Chaihu, to tonify the Spleen and Stomach. All symptoms resolved immediately.
The son of Dayin Zhou Yingchang suffered from scrofula (Luoli) and strictly took phlegm-resolving agents. For deficiency patterns, Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) is appropriate.

The lips are the bloom of the Spleen, and the mouth is the orifice of the Lung. Furthermore, the Yangming meridian circles the lips and mouth and intersects at the Renzhong acupoint (belonging to the Yangming Stomach meridian). Therefore, individuals with Spleen and Stomach deficiency often present with these symptoms, not only post-illness. The Spleen governs saliva; when Spleen Qi is deficient, it cannot retain fluids, often accompanied by drooling. This may be mistaken for Phlegm, leading to the use of phlegm-draining medicines, which further depletes Body Fluids, failing to nourish the sinews, resulting in limb convulsions and worsening condition. The treatment principle is identical to that of Slow Spleen Wind (Man Pi Feng): one should use strong Spleen and Stomach-tonifying medicines, adding Shengma and Chaihu, and absolutely avoid Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) and Longdancao (Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma). One must also observe the complexion: yellow indicates Spleen weakness; cyanotic indicates Liver excess; dull cyanotic-yellow indicates Wood overacting on Earth; mixed cyanotic-red indicates Wood-Fire Wind-Heat. Black indicates Cold Water counter-acting to insult Earth; white indicates Qi deficiency and collapse of Yang. In all such cases, Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) combined with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Blue Green Decoction) is appropriate. If there are slight limb convulsions, alternating tidal fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and sallow complexion, it indicates damage to the Spleen and Stomach. Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Gan Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Bai Fu Ling (Poria) should be used to tonify Stomach Qi. For Spleen and Stomach weakness, Wuyi Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) is used; for deficiency-cold, add Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Pao Jiang (Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma). For sinking of Spleen Qi, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) is used to raise Yang. For thirst, Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is used to generate Body Fluids. If Liver Wood insults the Spleen, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Fuling, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) is used to treat the Liver and tonify the Spleen.
Case Record 2
A child suffered from food stagnation-induced fever and lip twitching. Someone administered Yangwei Tang (Nourish Stomach Decoction), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), which exacerbated abdominal distension and afternoon fever. Palpation of the abdomen revealed no pain. I believed that although the previous medicines digested the food, they re-injured the Spleen and Stomach. Several doses of Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) led to recovery.
Case Record 3
A child suffered from food stagnation-induced fever, vomiting, and lip twitching. After taking digestive and heat-clearing agents, the food was digested, but the fever persisted. I stated: This is merely deficient heat in the Stomach meridian. Four Junzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Shengma, and Chaihu were administered for four doses, resulting in cure.
Case Record 4
A child, who usually had a pale complexion, suddenly exhibited slight twitching of the eyes and lips. Occasionally, the face appeared yellow and cyanotic. After a while, the lips, mouth, hands, and feet also twitched slightly. This indicated Spleen deficiency with Liver insulting the Spleen. Wuyi Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) added with Goutenggou (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) and Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma) was given for one dose, reducing the facial cyanosis slightly; two more doses stopped the lip and mouth twitching; finally, Yigong San added with Shengma and Chaihu for four doses resulted in complete recovery.
Case Record 5
A child suffered from vomiting and diarrhea in the summer months, with slight twitching of the eyes and lips, cyanotic-white complexion, and cold hands and feet. Yulu San (Jade Dew Powder) was still used. I stated: The condition has transformed into Slow Spleen Wind (Man Pi Feng); warm tonification of the Spleen and Kidney is required. The family did not believe me, and the child subsequently died.
