Infantile fetal convulsion (Tai Jing Feng) is caused by the pregnant woman drinking alcohol, becoming angry, or suffering from fright and falls during pregnancy, or by external wind pathogenic factors invading internally and injuring the fetus, resulting in the infant falling ill immediately after birth. If within the first month, the infant exhibits high fever, eyes rolling upward, clenched fists, trismus with salivation, stiff neck with spasms, frightened crying, retracted cheeks, open fontanelle, red cheeks with a bluish facial complexion, and closed eyes, treatment should involve dispersing wind, relieving convulsions, resolving phlegm, and regulating qi, along with applying the method of pasting the fontanelle; for severe cases, Zhuyin Wan (Cinnabar and Silver Pill) may be used to purge downwards. If the face is blue with clenched fists and spasms, formulas such as Baoming Dan (Life-Preserving Pill) or Gouteng San (Uncaria Powder) should be used. One must not mistakenly diagnose this as Spleen Wind (Pi Feng) and recklessly use warming medicines. If the area between the eyebrows is red, or if the fingerprint on the Tiger's Mouth (Hukou) curves inward, it is treatable; use Gouteng San (Uncaria Powder) or Quanxie San (Scorpion Powder). If the area between the eyebrows is black, or if the fingerprint extends outward against the normal direction, it is untreatable. Generally, infants have fragile zang-fu organs and should not easily be administered heavy sedative agents containing silver powder, as these can damage true qi and often lead to death. Furthermore, during each month of pregnancy, specific meridians nourish the fetus: the first month belongs to the Liver, the second to the Gallbladder, the third to the Heart, the fourth to the Small Intestine, the fifth to the Spleen, the sixth to the Stomach, the seventh to the Lung, the eighth to the Large Intestine, the ninth to the Kidney, and the tenth to the Bladder. Illnesses often arise due to pathological conditions contracted during pregnancy. One must observe which month the disease was contracted and which meridian is affected, harmonize yin and yang, regulate the Spleen and Stomach, and supplement with herbs addressing the presenting symptoms; there will be no case that does not heal.
Clinical Cases:
An infant suffered from fetal convulsion, and various medicines were ineffective. The Placenta Humanus (Zi He Che) was ground into a paste like mud, taken at a dose of approximately one qian per time, emulsified and taken with milk. Simultaneously, the mother took Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Decoction for Great Tonification) added with Gouteng (Uncaria Rhynchophylla) and Lulu (Euphorbia Humifusa). After more than two months, the attacks gradually lightened; after more than a year, they became less frequent. After taking medicine for over a year, there were no recurrences until the eruption of smallpox triggered another episode. Placenta Humanus (Zi He Che) was ground into a paste, mixed with glutinous rice flour to form pills the size of adzuki beans. Each dose consisted of 100 pills, taken with milk. After consuming the equivalent of two placentas, the condition completely resolved. After marriage, it relapsed. The previous pills were used again along with Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Decoction for Great Tonification) and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia), added with Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Huangqi (Astragalus Membranaceus), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), and Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit). After more than a year, he recovered, having abstained from sexual activity. Later, due to overwork, it recurred. The previous pills and Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Decoction for Great Tonification) were used but were ineffective. A large dose of Dushen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) consisting of several jin was then consumed, after which the attacks slowed slightly. Subsequently, Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 2 liang and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) 1 qian were administered over several doses, stopping the attacks immediately. The previous medicines were continued, interspersed with Dushen Tang (Ginseng Decoction), leading to recovery.
Another infant suffered from fetal convulsion and was cured using Ziheche Wan (Placenta Pills), Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Decoction for Great Tonification), and Gouteng Gao (Uncaria Paste). It relapsed after marriage. A large dose of Dushen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia), added with Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Huangqi (Astragalus Membranaceus), and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), were decocted and taken. After half a year, the attacks lightened slightly; after more than a year, they ceased. Later, whenever tired or angry, it would recur, but immediate administration of decocted medicine led to quick recovery. Later, after recovering from Shanghan (Cold Damage), it recurred with all deficiency symptoms present, which were indescribable. Two Placenta Humans (Zi He Che) were used, and more than ten jin of Dushen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) was decocted and taken, leading to recovery. Later, suffering from wind-cold cough with dry throat and internal heat, Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) material added with Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) was decocted and taken, along with Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Decoction for Great Tonification), leading to recovery.
