Chi Bai You Feng (Red and White Wandering Wind), belongs to the patterns of Wind-Heat and Blood-Heat, because blood tends to circulate erratically when heated. The white color indicates a disorder in the Qi level, while the red color indicates a disorder in the Blood level. This condition may arise because the Cou Li (pores and interstices) are not dense, allowing Wind and Heat to struggle with each other and become stagnant; or it may be caused by the wet nurse consuming rich and greasy foods. If it is a Wind-Heat pattern, use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) and Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit). If it is a Blood-Heat pattern, use Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit), and Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex). If it is a pattern of Wind-Heat struggling together, use Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Powder to Overcome Toxins). If it is an internal Heat with external Cold pattern, use Jia Wei Qiang Huo San (Modified Notopterygium Powder). If it is a Stomach Qi deficiency pattern, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome) and Fang Feng, or Xiao Feng San (Eliminate Wind Powder). If it is a Blood deficiency pattern, use Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder); if there is no response, use Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) and Liu Wei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill). If an infant suffers from this disease, one must examine the cause of the symptoms and treat the mother accordingly.
One child suffered from this disease, with lesions appearing either red or white, causing pain or itching. Upon inquiry, it was found that the cause was the mother's consumption of rich and greasy foods. I treated the mother with Dong Yuan Qing Wei San (Dongyuan's Stomach-Clearing Powder) and the child with Niu Huang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill), resulting in a cure.
One child suffered from this disease due to the mother's emotional depression and anger. The mother took Jia Wei Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction) and Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). After the child's heat symptoms subsided, he was cured by taking Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang (Modified Spleen-Tonifying Decoction).
One child suffered from this disease, having a craving for rich and sweet foods, leading to swollen gums that gradually progressed to erosion and ulceration. He was first treated with Qing Wei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder), followed by Si Wei Fei Er Wan (Four-Ingredient Child-Nourishing Pill), taken alternately, resulting in a cure.
One child suffered from this disease with red, itchy lesions and a floating, rapid pulse. This was a Wind-Heat pattern of the Spleen and Stomach meridians, cured by using Ren Shen Xiao Feng San (Ginseng Wind-Eliminating Powder). Later, due to food stagnation, the disease recurred with red, painful lesions. It was first treated with Bao He Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill), then eliminated by Yi Gong San (Yigong Powder).
One child suffered from this disease with severe itching, scratching until pus flowed, accompanied by alternating chills and fever. This was a pattern of Liver Blood dryness generating Wind. He was first treated with Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), which quickly alleviated the Liver symptoms. However, fatigue and poor appetite remained, so Yi Gong San (Yigong Powder) and San Huang San (Three Yellows Powder) were used to achieve a cure.
A fifteen-year-old girl suffered from this disease with red, itchy lesions, alternating chills and fever, hypochondriac pain, and a face that appeared either blue or red. This was a pattern of Liver Fire stirring and Blood-Heat. She was first treated with Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) added with Dan Cao (Gentiana Root) for four doses, which quickly alleviated all symptoms. However, she still experienced body fatigue, poor appetite, aversion to cold, and nausea. This indicated that the Spleen was being oppressed by Liver Wood and Lung Qi was deficient. She was cured using Wu Wei Yi Gong San (Five-Ingredient Yigong Powder) and Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder).
A woman suffered from this disease with alternating chills, fever, and vomiting. She was first treated with Jia Wei Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction), which brought relief after two doses; she was then cured by Ren Shen Xiao Feng San (Ginseng Wind-Eliminating Powder). Later, due to anger-induced heat, her menstruation became profuse like a gush, her whole body turned red, and her limbs convulsed. Her pulse was difficult to palpate, and her complexion resembled jasper. This indicated that Wood and Fire in the Liver and Heart meridians were struggling, causing reckless bleeding. She was first treated with Chai Hu Zhi Zi San (Bupleurum and Gardenia Powder), followed by Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), which quickly alleviated all symptoms. Finally, she recovered after taking Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction).
One child had a red, wandering rash, confusion, and fever because his mother had contracted cold, suffered abdominal pain, and drank distilled liquor. The wet nurse was instructed to drink one or two cups of cold rice vinegar occasionally, and two or three drops were also applied inside the child's mouth. The child recovered after one month.
Gui Pi Tang (Spleen-Tonifying Decoction) treats children who suffer from the aforementioned symptoms due to their wet nurse's worry and overthinking injuring the Spleen, leading to Blood deficiency and fever. Symptoms include prolonged illness, poor appetite, body fatigue, hematochezia or hematuria, palpitations and restlessness, fright palpitations and insomnia, heart and Spleen pain, spontaneous sweating, and night sweats.
