The first segment of the infant's index finger (left hand for males, right hand for females) is called the Wind Gate; the second segment is called the Qi Gate; and the third segment is called the Life Gate. If a red line appears only at the first segment, the condition is treatable; if it appears at the second segment, it is difficult to treat; if it appears at the third segment, it is untreatable. The absence of pulse manifestation at the Wind Gate indicates no disease; its presence indicates mild illness. Its manifestation at the Qi Gate indicates severe illness, while its manifestation at the Life Gate indicates a critical condition with a high mortality rate ("nine deaths, one life"). Red lines at the Wind or Qi Gates indicate Heart Disease (treated primarily with Niuhuang Baolong Wan [Calculus Bovis and Dragon Bone Pill]). Green lines indicate Liver Disease (treated primarily with Xieqing Wan [Draining Green Pill]). White lines indicate Lung Disease (treated primarily with Baoyuan Tang [Preserve Origin Decoction]). Yellow lines indicate Spleen Disease (treated primarily with Baopi Yizhen Tang [Preserve Spleen and Benefit True Decoction]). Black lines indicate Kidney Disease (untreatable).
The left cheek corresponds to the Liver, the right cheek to the Lung, the Tian Ting (central forehead) to the Heart, the Di Ge (chin) to the Kidney, and the Zhun Tou (nose tip) to the Spleen. Redness in any of the Five Yue areas indicates Heat (administer 3-4 fen of Renshen Cha [Ginseng Tea] to mix with Niuhuang Baolong Wan). Pale whiteness indicates Deficiency (treated primarily with Baoyuan Tang). Redness at the Tian Ting indicates Excessive Heat (administer 3-4 fen of Renshen Cha to mix with Niuhuang Baolong Wan). Greenness indicates Wind (mix Bao Yuan Tang with Xieqing Wan). Red and white mixed colors indicate Water-Fire Fright (take Qingxinlingshen Tang added with fried Suanzao Ren, Yuanzhi [Polygala Root], Roucongrong [Cistanche Stem], and Yizhiren [Bungeea Seed], each 5-6 fen). Redness from Yin Tang to Shangen (between the eyes) indicates Heart and Small Intestine Heat (take Zhenxin Anshen Tang [Settle Heart Calm Spirit Decoction] combined with Daochi San [Guide Out Red Powder] ingredients). Redness from Shangen to the nasal bridge indicates Heart and Stomach Heat (take Zhenxin Anshen Tang added with Shigao [Gypsum Fibrosum], 1 qian). The lips correspond to the Spleen. Red lip color indicates Phlegm-Heat (Baoyuan Tang added with Huanglian [Coptis Rhizome], Beimu [Fritillaria Bulb], and Zhusha [Cinnabar], 5-6 fen). Green lip color indicates Convulsive Wind (Baoyuan Tang combined with Xieqing Wan ingredients). Black lip color indicates Evil Invasion (treated primarily with Suheli Wan [Styrax Pill]).
