一因气不舒而误用耗气顺气等药,反增饱闷,陈皮用至五分,禁枳实、浓朴;
二因伤气而误用消导,反损胃气,至绝谷,禁枳壳、大黄、蓬、棱、曲、朴;
三因身热而误用寒凉,必致损胃增热,禁芩、连、栀、柏、升柴;
四因日内未曾服生化汤,勿用参、 、术,以致块痛不消;
五毋用地黄以滞恶露;
六毋用枳壳、牛膝、枳实以消块;
七便秘,毋用大黄、芒硝;
八毋用苏木、棱、蓬以行块、芍药能伐气。不可用;
九毋用山楂汤以攻块定痛,而反损新血;

第一,因为气机不畅而误用耗气、顺气等药物,反而增加饱闷感,陈皮用量最多不超过五分,禁用枳实、厚朴;
第二,因为伤气而误用消导药物,反而损伤胃气,导致绝食,禁用枳壳、大黄、蓬莪术、三棱、神曲、厚朴;
第三,因为身体发热而误用寒凉药物,必然导致损伤胃气并增加热势,禁用黄芩、黄连、栀子、黄柏、升麻、柴胡;
第四,因为日内未曾服用生化汤,勿用参、芪、术,以致瘀块疼痛不消除;
第五,不要用地黄以免阻滞恶露排出;
第六,不要用枳壳、牛膝、枳实来消除瘀块;
第七,便秘时,不要用大黄、芒硝;
第八,不要用苏木、三棱、蓬莪术来行血化瘀,芍药能伐气,不可用;
第九,不要用山楂汤来攻逐瘀块定痛,反而损伤新血;
Umbilical cord severing should ideally be done by wrapping the cord in cotton and biting it off. If the weather is cold, or due to difficult labor causing fatigue in both mother and child, one should use a paper wick soaked in hemp seed oil to slowly burn through the cord, thereby assisting the recovery of Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Even if the fetus has died, allowing warmth to enter the navel area increases the likelihood of the mother's survival; do not cut it with a knife.
Hua Tai San (Slippery Fetus Powder): Take several doses regularly near term to facilitate easy delivery.

For those with Qi deficiency and weak constitutions, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), adjusting as appropriate. For those with dry stools and stagnation, add Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) 2 qian.
Verse: Hua Tai San uses slices of Dang Gui, along with Chuan Xiong, Shu Di, and Shan Yao ground together. Add Du Zhong and Zhi Qiao; taking this regularly near term yields miraculous effects.
Secret Effective Prescription for Delivery
Used for transverse or malpresentations that have persisted for days without delivery; one dose results in immediate delivery. For premature fetal restlessness, one dose calms it. Taking one dose near term protects against complications. It also treats intrauterine fetal death and post-miscarriage conditions where lactation fails; one dose restores the original state.
Ingredients: Quan Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) [1.5 qian each], Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) [1 qian, heart removed], Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) [8 fen], Huang Qi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) [8 fen], Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) [processed with ginger] [8 fen], Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen) [1.2 qian], Qi Ai (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) [7 fen], Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) [7 fen], Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [5 fen], Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) [6 fen, stir-fried with flour], Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus) [6 fen, stir-fried with flour], Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) [1.2 qian, omit in winter].
Of the thirteen ingredients listed, only twelve are used; do not arbitrarily add or subtract. For fetal stabilization, remove Hong Hua. For promoting labor, remove Qi Ai; use half a bowl of well water and three slices of fresh ginger as guides, take hot. The dregs can be decocted again with one bowl of water until half remains, taken hot. If ineffective, repeat the second decoction; it will work immediately without needing a second dose.
Verse: A secret effective prescription for delivery, taken near term ensures safety. For transverse or malpresentations affecting the fetus, one dose shows clear efficacy. Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Chuan Bei, Jing Jie Sui are good; Huang Qi, Hong Hua, Hou Po, Qiang Huo. Qi Ye, Zhi Qiao, Tu Si Zi, Shao Yao, Gan Cao, with ginger as a guide.
Cu Sheng Tu Nao Wan (Labor-Promoting Rabbit Brain Pill): Miraculous for transverse or malpresentations.
Ingredients: Rabbit brain marrow from the twelfth lunar month (one piece), Mu Ding Xiang (Syzygii Aromatici Flos) (one piece), Ru Xiang (Olibanum) [1 qian, separately ground], She Xiang (Moschus) [1 fen].
Form rabbit brain into pills the size of Euryale Seed (Qian Shi), dry in shade, seal tightly. Take one pill with warm wine when needed.
Verse: Rabbit brain pills made in the twelfth lunar month are excellent; Ru Xiang, She Xiang, Mu Ding Xiang. Formed like Euryale seeds, sealed tight, taken with warm wine.
Ming Dan (Life-Snatching Pill)
Used during labor or just before, for symptoms such as eyes rolling back, jaw clenching, black face, blue lips, foaming at the mouth, indicating imminent death. If the face is slightly red, it indicates fetal death but maternal survival; urgently use:
Ingredients: She Tui (Bombyx Batryticatus / Snake Slough - *Note: Text says She Tui which is snake slough*), Can Sha (Bombyx Batryticatus / Silkworm Excrement) [burnt to ash but retaining nature], Fa Hui (Hair Ash / Sanguis Carbonisatum) [1 qian], Ru Xiang (Olibanum) [5 fen].
Grind into fine powder, take with wine.
Verse: Ming Dan uses She Tui effectively, combined with Can Sha, Fa Hui, and Ru Xiang. Grind to powder, take with wine; even if the fetus dies, the mother's life is preserved.
Jia Wei Xiong Gui Tang (Modified Xiong Gui Decoction): Treats uterine prolapse and open cervix/vagina.
Ingredients: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [2 qian], Huang Qi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) [1 qian], Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) [2 qian], Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) [8 fen], Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) [1 qian], Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [4 fen], Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) [15 grains].
If still not retracting, add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 8 fen and Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 8 fen (wine-fried).
Verse: Uterus not retracting, birth canal open; urgently use Jia Wei Xiong Gui Tang. Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Zhi Gan Cao, Sheng Ma, Wu Wei Zi decocted together.
Treatment Methods for New Postpartum
Sheng Hua Tang (Transforming the Stasis Decoction) should be taken consecutively for two doses initially. For women who were constitutionally weak before pregnancy and experience dangerous or heat syndromes leading to miscarriage, do not restrict the number of doses; continue until the illness recedes. If exhaustion during labor leads to severe bleeding and collapse, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 3-4 qian and take frequently without worry. If shortness of breath occurs, add Ren Shen. The reason for adding Ginseng to Sheng Hua Tang is to prevent blood stasis; do not avoid it simply because it is a tonic. Some practitioners avoid Dang Gui in postpartum care, which is a serious error. This formula is comprehensive and infallible. People often use Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) for postpartum care; however, Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) is cold and causes stagnation, and Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) is slightly sour and lacks tonifying properties, potentially damaging vital Qi, which is a major mistake.
Ten Errors in Postpartum Medication
1. Error due to Qi stagnation: Using Qi-consuming or Qi-moving herbs incorrectly increases bloating. Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) should not exceed 5 fen; Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) are forbidden.
2. Error due to Qi injury: Using digestive herbs incorrectly damages Stomach Qi, leading to loss of appetite. Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Peng Lang (Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma / Curcumae Longae Rhizoma), Qu (Medicated Leaven), and Hou Po are forbidden.
3. Error due to body heat: Using cold/cool herbs incorrectly damages Stomach Qi and increases heat. Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), and Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) are forbidden.
4. Not having taken Sheng Hua Tang within the day: Do not use Ren Shen, Huang Qi, or Bai Zhu, otherwise stasis pain will not resolve.
5. Do not use Shu Di Huang as it causes stagnation of lochia.
6. Do not use Zhi Qiao, Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), or Zhi Shi to eliminate stasis.
7. For constipation, do not use Da Huang or Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas).
8. Do not use Su Mu (Sappan Lignum), Leng (Sanleng), or Peng (Ezhu) to move stasis; Shao Yao inhibits Qi and should not be used.
9. Do not use Shan Zha Tang (Hawthorn Decoction) to attack stasis and relieve pain, as it damages new blood.
10. Do not lightly administer Ji Kun Dan to expel the fetus or placenta.
For critical postpartum conditions, frequently administer Sheng Hua Tang, modifying according to symptoms based on the standard formula discussion.
Postpartum Chills and Fever
After recent childbirth, Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi) are both deficient, making chills and fever, body pain, and abdominal pain common. Never recklessly administer dispersing agents. Use Sheng Hua Tang as the main formula, slightly supplemented with dispersing herbs. Postpartum Spleen deficiency easily leads to food stagnation causing fever. Laypeople see fever and assume exterior contraction, inducing sweat immediately, which accelerates death. One should add Spleen-fortifying and food-digesting herbs to Sheng Hua Tang. Generally, postpartum treatment prioritizes nourishing Blood, then tonifying Qi. Relying solely on Ren Shen and Huang Qi for Qi tonification is not ideal. For postpartum deficiency, use Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Bai Zhu, Chen Pi, and Zhi Gan Cao. For mild heat, use Fu Ling (Poria) for leaching out dampness, and the heat will subside. For severe heat, add Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma). Why use Ginger for great heat? This heat is not excess heat, but deficiency heat generated internally due to Yin deficiency. Gan Jiang enters the Lung meridian to benefit Lung Qi, and the Liver meridian to guide other herbs in generating Blood, but must be used with Yin-nourishing and Blood-tonifying herbs. For postpartum chills, fever, and abdominal pain, treat the evil blood (stasis); if there is no abdominal pain, it is not stasis.
For postpartum chills and fever accompanied by facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes), this indicates severe Qi and Blood deficiency; treat with strong tonification. If the Left hand pulse is deficient, use more Blood-nourishing than Qi-tonifying herbs. If the Right hand pulse is deficient, use more Qi-tonifying than Blood-nourishing herbs. Never use dispersing formulas like Xiao Xu Ming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction).
Prepartum Conditions: Cold Damage, Epidemic Diseases, Malaria, Miscarriage, etc.
If prepartum conditions include Cold Damage (Shang Han), epidemic diseases, or malaria, prolonged heat inevitably leads to miscarriage. After miscarriage, heat increases further because heat consumes Yin Blood, followed by blood loss from delivery. Practitioners must not wrongly argue that Cold Damage or malaria pathogens remain and mistakenly administer Zhi Zi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Soybean Decoction), Chai Hu, Huang Qin, Huang Lian, or Huang Bo. Even if there are alternating tidal fevers or constipation of urine and stool, Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) and Cheng Qi Tang (Order the Qi Decoction) are absolutely contraindicated. Prioritize postpartum care over pathogenic factors; strongly tonify Qi and Blood, and frequently administer Sheng Hua Tang. If there is collapse of form and Qi, add Sheng Mai San (Generate Pulse Powder) to prevent blood syncope. Chuan Xiong is pungent and dispersing; Gan Jiang dispels deficiency fire. Even with constipation and thirst, frequent administration of Sheng Hua Tang generates fluids and unblocks bowels and bladder. Using cold remedies for heat further damages Middle Qi, which is a grave error.
